It’s been thirty years since Disney released one of its most iconic animated movies, The Lion King (1994). The movie tells the story of Simba, a lion cub who is excited to become king, but runs away when his evil Uncle Scar says that Simba is the reason his father, Mufasa, is dead. Simba is saved by Timon and Pumbaa — a meerkat and a warthog — who raise him in the Hakuna Matata lifestyle.

Simba returns to the Pride Lands when he suddenly encounters his childhood best friend, Nala. Nala tells him that Scar is king and has destroyed their home. Simba must defeat Scar and return the Pride Lands to its former glory.

The Lion King was so successful that it spawned two sequels, two animated television shows, three short films, a long-running Broadway show, and a 2019 live-action remake.

Then, on December 20, Disney released its newest Lion King movieMufasa: The Lion King, in theaters nationwide. Disney’s newest live-action film tells the story of how Mufasa became King of the Pride Lands. He was separated from his family at a young age and was taken in by Taka’s (AKA Scar) pride.

The two are then separated from Taka’s family and must learn to rely on each other for survival. Things change when they meet a young lioness named Sarabi. Both Mufasa and Taka develop feelings for Sarabi, but as Lion King fans know, she falls in love with Mufasa.

Taka becomes jealous and betrays Mufasa, but Mufasa does not disown Taka, a decision he will regret in the future.

While Mufasa: The Lion King did not have a particularly strong start at the box office, it has since rebounded and the movie has grossed more than $500 million.

The success of Disney’s latest Lion King movie has shown Disney that, no matter the story told, fans will head to the theaters to watch anything Lion King-related.

And with that being said, Disney is reportedly working on another Lion King film. However, it will NOT be a sequel to Mufasa: The Lion King.

A new live-action ‘THE LION KING’ film is reportedly in the works at Disney.

We do not know what the new Lion King film will be about at this time. Disney could have decided to remake either The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride (1998) or The Lion King 1 1/2 (2004). The Lion King 1 1/2 tells the story of the original 1994 film from Timon and Pumbaa’s point of view.

During a recent interview, Lin Manuel Miranda, who did the music for Mufasa: The Lion King, said that he was holding out for Disney to announce a live-action remake of The Lion King 1 1/2, calling it “low-key great.”

So, it is possible Disney took that to heart and chose to remake the underrated sequel film. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

Are you excited to hear about another Lion King remake? What Lion King film would you like to see remade, Lion King 2 or Lion King 1 1/2? Or should Disney stop with The Lion King movies? Share your thoughts in the comments!
