In the history of blockbuster franchises, few people have been as dedicated to bringing back a character as Ewan McGregor, one of the most beloved Star Wars actors of all time.

The Scottish actor has a few rivals for longevity in big-budget franchises. Fellow Brit Patrick Stewart has been playing Professor Charles Xavier, AKA Professor X, for decades, while his co-star Hugh Jackman is apparently legally required to play Logan, AKA Wolverine, whenever he doesn’t have a Broadway show booked.
Wesley Snipes has been making noise about returning as the original Marvel movie hero, Blade, and we wouldn’t put money against Tobey Maguire appearing in some Spider-Man project in the near future.

However, the majority of these high-profile franchise actors have to be lured back to their roles by the promise of big paychecks or working with Ryan Reynolds (for some reason). Not Ewan McGregor. This is one actor that you can rarely stop from mentioning his most iconic role whenever he gets and 2024 is no exception. McGregor wants to be Obi-Wan Kenobi again.

In the press tour leading up to him receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, Ewan McGregor once again called out to Lucasfilm to let him play Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars project once more.
He told Variety, “I loved, more than anything, getting to know Alec Guinness’ work because I was playing him as a young man. Even now with the series, that’s my personal challenge — if a take feels a bit like him, I’m happy.”
Apparently, after more than two decades of playing the Jedi Master, he wants to keep going. He continued, “I really do hope we get a chance to do another one. Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”
Ewan McGregor debuted as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), the kickoff to George Lucas‘s prequel trilogy. At the time, McGregor was a bright light in an emerging generation of stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Ben Affleck, but still, taking on the role of Kenobi was a big risk.
The role had only previously been played by Alec Guinness, and McGregor was basically being asked to portray one of the most iconic figures in science fiction film, but as a young guy with a rattail.

Fortunately, Ewan McGregor pulled it off, and no one had anything to complain about any aspect of the prequel trilogy. Most recently, the actor reprised the role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Disney+ limited series that saw him facing off once more with Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker.
The Deborah Chew show was initially developed as a film and then turned into a limited series, and now there is no word whether we will ever get Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2.
McGregor himself has said, “The truth is I’ve talked about having to cover for doing the Obi-Wan season for years, I had to lie about that, and I’m not lying about this now. There’s been no phone call to me from Lucasfilm or Disney saying, ‘Let’s do another one.'” But it sounds like he’s never going to stop pushing them about it, so there’s always a chance.
