Actor Tim Allen has enjoyed a decades-long career in Hollywood, though that career has been both decorated with success and marred by controversy.

In recent months, however, Allen says he’s been investing time in his spiritual life and “really” reading the Bible for the first time—but the experience has not been what he thought it would be.

Tim Allen’s rise to fame began in the late 1980s with his stand-up comedy career, which centered around his Tool Time persona–a macho, everyman character that resonated with audiences.

His big break came in 1991 when he starred in the hit television sitcom Home Improvement on ABC.

The show, which debuted on September 17, 1991, became one of the most-watched series of the 1990s and earned Allen a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series in 1995. This success catapulted him into stardom, making him a household name.

Allen’s partnership with Disney has also played a significant role in his career. He voiced Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story franchise, starting with the first film’s release on November 22, 1995. The role became iconic, with Allen continuing to voice the character in subsequent sequels (Toy Story 2 in 1999, Toy Story 3 in 2010, and Toy Story 4 in 2019).

Allen is also slated to return to his famous role in the fifth Toy Story installment, which will debut on June 19, 2026.

Allen also starred in Disney’s Christmas-themed The Santa Clause series as Jolly Old St. Nick himself.

The first movie debuted on November 11, 1994, and was followed by two sequels in 2002 and 2006, respectively. He would later reprise his role in the Disney+ series, The Santa Clauses.

In a recent post on X, formerly Twitter, Allen gave fans a glimpse into his personal life, saying he’s been investing time in his spiritual walk, and according to the 71-year-old comedian-turned-actor, he’s been pleasantly surprised by the journey.

Never took the time in all my years to ever read and really read the Bible. Currently almost through the Jerusalem Bible Old Testament and almost done with the Prophets. Next up to New Testament. So far amazing and not at all what I was expecting.

The post has been viewed more than 2.5 million times, has nearly 7,000 comments, and has been shared nearly 9,000 times.

X user TheForgottenFlame responded to Allen’s post, saying:

Agreed. I’m on a similar journey as I never took the time to read the Bible. I only just finished Genesis, but it has not been what I expected. Really looking forward to getting to the New Testament!

Another Allen fan responded to his post with a nod to his Buzz Lightyear role, saying, “To Corinthians . . . and beyond!”

He even received a word of encouragement from Greg Laurie, the senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, whose real-life story is the basis for the 2023 faith-based film Jesus Revolution, starring Kelsey Grammar and Jonathan Roumie (The Chosen).

That’s fantastic, Tim! The Bible is God’s very word to each of us. The message of the Bible is really how we can come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

I hope you will read John 3:16, where Jesus says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son and whosever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
