The Marvel Cinematic Universe needs a boost and Kevin Feige is opening the door for the biggest crossover possible: the MCU and the DC Universe.

Marvel Studios Chief Creative Officer and President Kevin Feige is currently on a major press tour, and he has a lot of talking points to go over. The most recent MCU film, Deadpool & Wolverine, has been released to a predictably massive box office opening weekend, mining the fan nostalgia for the Fox X-Men franchise and transporting Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) into the Sacred Timeline (apparently, it’s not very clear).

Marvel is also back at San Diego Comic-Con for the first time in a little while, taking the opportunity to use the popular fan convention to promote the third Deadpool movie, the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World (with Anthony Mackie in his first solo outing as the title character), and The Fantastic Four.

Kevin Feige is also doing damage control over seemingly stalled projects like the Mahershala Ali reboot of Blade and whatever is going on with The Kang Dynasty/Avengers 5 after the scandal surrounding former star Jonathan Majors.

But while the MCU architect might be dancing around news regarding why it’s taking so long to get a new Daywalker on the big screen or what Kang Variant we might be seeing in the future, he’s refreshingly candid about his openness to an MCU/DCU crossover. Speaking to Collider, Feige was asked about the possibility that his long-term association with new DC Studios head James Gunn could ever produce a project. He responded:

“I think about it occasionally, like any fan would think about it. I don’t know when in the heck that would ever happen, or how that would happen. But we’ve been talking too long for me to go, “Never! We’d never be able to do that.” We’ll never say never, but no, no plans. I’ve seen the paparazzi shots of the Superman set looking cool. So he’s focusing on that. We’re focusing on this.”

It would be pretty shocking for Kevin Feige to drop the news of a theatrical Marvel Versus DC movie right as he’s pumping up Deadpool & Wolverine, but still remarkable that he is even open to the possibility. Perhaps all the Multiverse action has gone to his head?

Of course, there is plenty of precedent for a crossover between the world’s two most iconic comic book franchises.

Dating back to the 1970s, comic book fans enjoyed one-offs like Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man, Green Lantern/Silver Surfer Unholy Alliances, JLA/Avengers, and, perhaps most famously, DC vs. Marvel, a maxi-series in which fans voted on who would win match-ups like Captain America duking it out with Batman and Wonder Woman versus the X-Men’s Storm.

If Marvel produces many more flops, maybe we’ll finally get to see the Amalgam Universe on screen. At least Feige’s open to it.

What kind of DCU/MCU crossover would you like to see?
