You know he really isn’t Tony Stark! He’s an actor, and actors can play multiple roles. Look at Thanos and Cable. Same guy. People think that he’s really Tony and that he died. Idiots.

    1. Kris

Agreed – but when an actor nails a role so unbelievably well, as he did with Tony Stark, it truly diminishes the legacy of RDJ and his portrayal if he’s brought back in the same universe as a villain- not even as an evil Tony Stark but a totally different character.

      1. No Thanks

So if RDJ has an amazing legacy from playing Iron Man, wouldn’t that legacy be increased by an incredible performance as Dr. Doom? Why would his legacy be diminished by more good performances? It makes no sense.

Not only that, but relegating RDJ to Iron Man only means you’ll pretty much never see him, or his amazing acting, in another Marvel movie, unless it’s some stupid multiverse cameo.

Except he is supposed to first appear at the end of the Fantastic Four, which takes place in a different universe from the MCU. Even when he shows up in the MCU proper, he won’t be from there. It’s all going to depend on the execution

Chris Evans was already the Human Torch before he was Capt. America. All of a sudden people have opinions, but if they weren’t told they’d never know. Ignorance is bliss, for some…

It’s just a sad move and I know Marvel could do better. I mean come on.

  3. Robert Miller

Seriously. This cannot be real. This is a terrible idea. Bring him back as Iron Man. It’s not that hard. This is so stupid and silly.

  4. BB

Chris Evans dual roled, why not RDJ?

    1. Kris

Evan’s Storm was part of a forgettable franchise- though bringing him back recently was interesting.

  5. JDD

I may be in the minority, but I think RDJ has the acting chops to pull this one off. If they do it right, the emotional toll it will have on the Avengers could be interesting to watch. I agree Marvel has been acting out of sheer desperation with many of their series (with the exception of Hawkeye). But, I have hope since they went back and did their due diligence to continue the Canon of Daredevil and Kingpin.

Everyone complains now. Its gonna come out and the baddie will finally be one of the best in MCU history and then no one’s gonna care. 8/3/204. Date it.

I’ve always felt the Multiverse tool was a lazy way of writing. Fix what you screwed up bring back what was successful after you end it. This is just another example of that. I have more faith in Marvel and besides that all you have to do is follow the boxes everything is written out for the next 50 years. The materials there why do we have to reinvent this wheel. We know what’s good we know what we like just bring it back in real life.

    1. Spank You Very Much

So you like predictable storylines that match up with “the boxes” perfectly. Yeah, no thanks. I’ll take a bit of wheel reinvention, gladly. Being a purist gets kinda boring.

  7. Garrett

    Its a movie. Chill people

  8. boris

It’s just a comic book, get a grip folks.

This isn’t a rug pull for those who patronize the theater. Think of the cast as being part of a repertory theater company – “Avengers Rep” – with tried and true members – and this makes more sense. Will patrons – sorry, the fans – keep buying tickets? I’m willing to give him a shot.

It’s fair to see Downey as a pair of safe hands. He won’t compensate for a weak script. I question whether this rises to the scenario of Jonathan Pryce playing The Engineer in Miss Saigon, but others will disagree.

Marvel movies have ALWAYS been about nostalgia and a cashgrab.

  11. Random

They should cast the German actor who played in Inglourious Basterds the dune who they at the tattoo in his forehead he’s a great villain.. I think he played in Django too

  12. prognosis omega

I’m sure that Downey could do a good job as Doom. However, they should change his unmasked appearance enough so that he wouldn’t look like he did while playing Iron Man. Eventually studios are just going to start creating deep-fake artificial actors to avoid all the problems that real actors can have (quitting, getting arrested, falling over dead, etc).

  13. CreepyUncleIdjit

If they’re really going with an older actor for Doom, Mads Mikkelsen is an infinitely better choice.

    1. Eeeee

He was already the villian in Dr Strange, yes?

  14. Al

I feel like there are a lot of great actors who could have pulled Dr Doom off better like Marton Csokas who was the villain in the equalizer movie. He has the build too.

  15. Macanoodough

I enjoy all these people who think Marvel sold out. Duh!?!?!
Where have you been? Marvel sold out when Stan Lee was still in charge. The movies they’ve made have sold out since day 1. There wasn’t this thirst that drove everyone to the internet to micromanage and shove their opinions down everyone’s throat and as a result everyone loved the product. Now the process is open to millions and the inevitable opinions enter in and derail everything. You should never want to know how the soup was made. If it’s good, eat it. if not, spit it out…

  16. Ahmed

    Bring Scarlett J back

  17. Walter

There was only one James Bond. There is only one Tony Stark. While I would love to have Iron Man/Stark back, this is just a really bad idea. It will hurt the old story line and the new. DO NOT DO IT.

  18. TeeBoneey

AH, duh, rehire Johnathon Majors. Should not have fired him in the first place. Misdemeanor equal to a fine. The whole trial stunk and so does Disney. Give him back his job.

    1. Billy D

Amen to that! Bring back JOHNATHAN MAJORS!!! They should have never fired him for someone who chased him down and then decided to play the victim. Ruining the whole Kang the Conquer ark over a Karen. What the hell Marvel?!

  19. CZR

I agree, bring back Majors or at the very least just replace Majors. Don’t need to replace the story line. The did this in Spartacus “Blood and Sand” after the actor tragically died after season one. The show was not amazing moving forward. But it can be done. I think Disney and MARVEL and the Russo brothers will pull it off, but it does feel lazy and if feels like a multiverse version of Tony Stark would have been a better fit.

  20. GB

If RDJ can keep his roles with legal convictions, why can’t Majors?

  21. Pat

Having RDJ come back as any other character but himself is pure laziness and lame! The masses don’t want that. Kang would have been a nice change in the right direction even with a Kang replacement. Everyone was looking forward to that. If you want another flop and boring movie like the Eternals, BW, or Hawkeye, which the latter two has been done over and over and over, or any kind of superhero movie that simply has a human character fighting with manmade weapons, then keeping wasting $$ on those monotonous kinds and the results will be seen at the box office, always!

  22. Nick B

People need to calm down. Let’s see what they deliver. I for one found it very interesting that he was to be a variant of Dr Doom and alongside a potential to have Tom Cruise as a variant of Iron Man. I would love to see that play out.
Kevin has all the cash he could ever want. He has something up his sleeve to make this fun and memorable.

  23. John

Story is king. They have to convince me.

  24. Mike

They have a plan and they may have done this to throw everyone off. They have been known to do that.

  25. Gary Puppet

RDJ’s announcement was the hot person you see on the dance floor at midnight, after having 10 drinks. Of course it’s exciting. Wow. But then there’s the morning wake up, with full sunlight, and crusted fluids all over the place. And the walk of shame. Downey SEEMS like a good idea. Probably isn’t.

  26. Luke

Bring him back! The sooner the better! He shouldn’t have ever left!

  27. Arte J

There’s no reason RDJ cant play a Romani. Let us recall that one of his most appreciated roles was as “a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude.”

  28. Este

Marvel/Disney trolling everybody! RDJ isn’t Doom, did you see the cheap green suit? That’s the costume? C’mon true believers, that suit was cheap even for Disney. This is all just a redirect to avoid announcing the new actor.
