I’ve been visiting Knott’s Berry farm since I was a kid in the late 1960’s with my mom and dad and sisters.
In the 1970’s I continued to visit as a high school and college student.
In the 1980”s as a had children of my own, I brought my own children to this and magical place. I still remember our kids enjoying this beautiful park, the haunted shack, the mine train, the stage coach and railroad. One of my favorite times and was raking the kids to the cookie shop. There i got a ” cookie credit card” for the kids they could present to the hostesses for a free cookie. My little two year old son, to short to be seen by the hostess was raised his hand with his cookie card, and I would tell the hostess give them whatever him and his sister want and I will pay the difference.
The utter look of excitement and awe in just that cookie trip is something we will remember always.
Since that time, we have been witness to many changes, the mystery lodge (our favorite with the river raft ride). The shortening of hours of the park, the remodel of the promenade where Mrs Knott’s restaurant is located, and the change of law enforcement, fire and military days where we could get in free in November.
My wife and I have continued to visit Knott’s till just recently. The last time before COVID with our first grandchild. Now we have 5 grandkids. Our first grandchild was only 4 months old when she visited, so we are up as a family to visit again.
There are times when I have witnessed many inappropriate behaviors in the park. Adults and juveniles included. Being under the influence, arguments, assault’s, automobile vandalism and break-ins, grand theft and shoplifting from shops. Each time, my wife says please don’t get involved, but I tell her to go to a safe distance, and intercede, either advising Knott’s staff of the situation or I burn out the situation by clipping on my badge where it can be seen. Usually the detergent is enough or I wait for Buena Park PD.
We were there was an incident with unruly juveniles did happen,to many for security to handle.
One question I had was how do they get weapons in at the gate with package checks and metal detectors? Second in my jurisdiction during events, concerts, fairs, amusement park openings we do have law enforcement staff, i.e. police, sheriff’s, probation and parole who also man the front gates. If we recognize trouble makers, look at gang tattoos, take their photo, search then again and let them know the consequences. Secondly, the tik tok influencers. Not so bright! They provide you with information. As a specialist in access security, make sure your fences are high and objects and items around the fence can not be used to access the park. To many incidents I have seen where dangerous people get access to entertainment venues, just by climbing a fence. IMEO
