So, exactly what was this “scam”? Florida collecting tolls for using its toll roads?

      This.
“Aware of this, rental car companies often offer toll devices for a daily fee ranging from $10 to $20.”

And what the scam is? Goverment build roads, but don’t think about who and how use this route. And now they have done.

Well I think car rental companies are charging and making $ off the unused toll $ that’s left on the transponders, you pay $10 and only use $5 , thier keeping your unused toll $ to sell off to someone else, sound like a big $$$ making gig to me off of the florida toll system, that direct $ thier scamming from Florida tax payer

Actually the $10 to $20 a day didn’t go towards any tolls. It was just the rental fee for the use of the transponder. It all went to the rental company. You paid tolls on top of this and paid the rental fee even if you didn’t use any tolls that day. I just set my friend up with a SunPass last month when the car rental tried this crap and told them the SunPass was only for FL residents, which is an outright lie. He got a SunPass before we left the airport and told the rental company to shove it.

The $10 to $20 a day went to the RENTAL CAR COMPANY, not to pay for tolls. You paid for the tolls ON TOP OF THIS. You were paying them for the ability to have a transponder, not paying for tolls. So, if you NEVER went through a toll or didn’t go through a toll that day, you would still be paying the rental company $10-$20 for that day. I live in Florida and anyone can get a SunPass through a vending machine or any drug or grocery store for $15 and that $15 goes towards your tolls, then the rest, if you need more, comes out of your checking account. The renters do not know this and the rental car companies took advantage of this. The new plan isn’t much different, it’s just marketed toward tourist. It will run off of the same system. Some rental agencies went as far as telling renters that SunPass was only available to FL residents, which was a flat out lie and furthered the scam. Hence why they created this new plan, making it very hard for a rental company to tell tourists this any more.

It’s all part of the fees associated with rental cars. The refill fee and tolls while not necessarily a “scam” it’s pretty high cost. I used the toll pass in December and it was great. I paid 5 dollars. The actual tag you get is free. Another way around tolls is that if you’re driving your own vehicle the toll tag from your state may work in Florida. Check your states toll website. A Disney trip has gotten so expensive any money saved is a bonus.

Have a lot more tolls appeared since we last visited in 2019 because back then we only came across one toll station between MCO and Davenport. Also it was only $1 per car. Is there something we need to know before our next visit in 2025. Any advice much appreciated.

  4. ANOTHER REASON NOT TO GO TO DISNEY WORLD EVER IN MY LIFETIME.
    DISNEY CALIFORNIA IS JUST FINE.
    NO TOLL ROADS.
AVOID GETTING SCAM OUT OF YOUR $ JUST DONT VISIT FLORIDA

It’s not a Disney World issue. I just rented a car in Florida. Unless you pay the rental car company $20/day for their box, every license plate toll you pass will cost you the actual toll plus a $25/each “administrative fee”. Many places in Florida it’s difficult to travel without paying tools, tolls aren’t the issue wither, it’s that “administrative fee”. Bring back the toll booths and this problem goes away.

I’m from the midwest and travel to florida in my car and have an IPass transponder. Most Florida toll roads accept it now. Greater Miami toll roads do not so its by license plate and a service charge by mail. I just dont drive enough to bother getting theirs. Last month I had to rent a car didnt want to pay the xtra, and used my phone ‘Maps’ to avoid tolls. It worked.
