I think the two aren’t mutually exclusive. You could believe she was “justly” fired and still support her. That said, there seems to be this belief by a lot of people nowadays that private businesses are obligated to adhere to some people’s ideas of “freedom of speech”. There is no such obligation. The First Amendment protects you from censure by the gov’t not by private industry. Companies like Disney have allows tried to curate and protect their image. It’s not surprising in a day and age where individuals for the first time in history have the opportunity to speak their opinions to a broad audience without having to go through gatekeepers (e.g., newscasters, book publishers) that these situations would occur. And no doubt there will be more of them. So, I’d just say, if you’re employed by a corporation, don’t assume that you can say and do whatever you want in your private life in the public eye and expect that your company won’t take notice.
