I think there are certainly benefits for handing over the streets within the DLR boundaries of West St, Katella, Ball, and Harbor, and there currently isn’t any other commercial concerns with any sort of presence on Magic Way or Disneyland Drive that would have standing to object in what was always assumed to be under Disney control. Not sure why locals would use those specific roads for commuting purposes when alternates exist.
Disney Way and Clementine have other businesses, unlike Disneyland Dr and Magic Way, so public access needs to be considered.
Whatever ownership is transferred though, it better not be a sweetheart deal like the Mickey and Friends parking structure was. It needs to be paid for at fair market values.
As an employee I support the locals concerns, I’m a local too. Disney should look towards closing the insane shortfalls with employees first. Compensation, housing, and over hiring part timers needs to be addressed first. Until then I wouldn’t hand Disney over anything.
For any local resident that has tried to slug their way up Ball to get to or from the 5 freeway, you know that it can up 10+ minutes to go 1/4 mile due entirely to traffic getting into the park.
Magic Way is an awesome shortcut that bypasses Ball and gets you right onto Disneyland Drive and straight to the freeway. Taking away this option will make traffic much worse in the area.
The DL Forward team is also proposing a redesign of Walnut, further impacting traffic for Disneyland’s neighbors.
DL Forward claims they want to be good neighbors, committed to transparency and minimizing impact. This is disingenuous. In the 90’s, Disney negotiated the closure of another through street, Cerritos and the city opened Magic Way, an agreement that is supposed to be in perpetuity. Disney also agreed to build a road from the 5 directly to the convention center, Gene Autry Way, but has abandoned that project, as it no longer suits their needs.
I urge you to sign the petition to save Magic Way and protect the rights of locals.
