Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter, which is now called X, will be one for the history books. Seemingly, everything went wrong, with the multi-billionaire facing widespread backlash and criticism for purchasing the massive social media site and essentially stripping all of the personality away. What’s left of Twitter (X) is just a shell of itself, and numerous companies are starting to notice.

For years, Twitter acted as the primary social media site for journalists and users interested in news-focused content. Twitter was also full of your typical social media content like viral videos and personal status updates that you couldn’t care less about, but Twitter had a leg up on the competition, prioritizing news and allowing users to share and interact with world events in unprecedented ways. This core method of communication and discovery of news hasn’t changed, but Elon certainly hasn’t made things easier during his very brief tenure as owner.
These changes to Twitter, which again is now called X for some reason, have led many companies to abandon ship altogether. The Walt Disney Company is seemingly one of these companies, with several major Disney accounts ending all posts on the platform.

2023 has been quite a tumultuous year for The Walt Disney Company, with Disney facing a different kind of battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. To briefly recap, Disney spoke out against a newly introduced bill back in 2022, a bill that was spearheaded by DeSantis. As a result, DeSantis, along with other conservative figures, made it their goal to make Disney pay.
These groups were ultimately successful, stripping Walt Disney World of its self-governing status in Orlando, Florida. For decades, the property in Florida operated under a ruling called the Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which essentially allowed Disney to act as its own form of government. In early 2023, Gov. DeSantis and the state of Florida took over this district, appointing new board members to oversee the land.
This sparked controversy for The Walt Disney Company from both sides of the political aisle. Disney’s decision to halt all communication on Elon Musk’s platform also boils down to politics but for far more important and pressing reasons.

As a result of Elon Musk’s controversial comments regarding the ongoing struggle between Palestine and Israel, Disney has cut all communication via X, at least for the time being. Musk’s controversial statements date back to November 15, when another user accused Jews of hating white people, to which Musk responded: “You have said the actual truth.”
The latest post from The official Walt Disney World and Disney Parks X accounts was on November 17, marking over ten days of silence. Accounts like @StarWars, @Pixar, and @MarvelStudios are also silent.
While we aren’t sure if this move is permanent, it’s certainly telling that Disney is prioritizing X far less than it used to.
