But what if they were free? You could watch it all without Disney+ and anyone could make amazing Micky mouse or Winnie the Pooh movies instead of churning out live action remakes that break your heart
As much as I do agree that Disney has already lost the magic, I don’t think the loss of the copyright is a cause, if they were still creative, the loss of the copyright wouldn’t be the end of the world
Yuuuup, the loss of the copyright does mean Disney won’t be able to money grub their old work anymore, anyone could come along and make something amazing without owing Disney revenue just for the mouse’s face
Here is what needs to be done a bill sent to Congress making anything that Walt and the Imagineers made for the Disney Co. to be solely for the Disney Co. forever.
Ew, Disney held these copyrights for nearly a century using lobbyists to buy the votes in Congress and get exceptions made to grub more monies from their old works. It’s not good for you or the future of these classic films
I just sent a request to a Senator to put up a bill that anything Walt come up with would stay Disney property forever. I do not know if I will have any luck but it was worth a try some of you do the same thing maybe shear numbers might kickstart this thing!
Check out their business strategy for the last decade? Live action reboots and secretive hatred for minority groups, these characters should be free for anyone to use and create new and beautiful works out of, Disney doesn’t need a cent more after nearly 100 years of government lobbyists extending their copyrights.
Disney built its empire on works from the public domain. Copyright is meant to keep the creator safe, not corporations. Mickey entering the public domain will not destroy the past csrtoons.
Yes! Exactly, they’ve held the copyrights over 70 years, much longer than the standard copyright legally should last, and all it does is keep their cartoons behind a paywall that makes Disney money
They shouldn’t go away. They’ve had tons of great characters, franchises, videogames, and even allowed Mattel to make Hot Wheels Character cars and part of the racer verse.
Disney’s legacy has already been shattered by the current leaders of this company through the live action remakes. They want to have a monopoly on the smear campaign they sell as family entertainment.
Let everything go to the public domain for creative people to bring life back into these characters as Walt Disney intended.
I feel like the magic is already gone. Disney was never cheap but now everything with them is so expensive that there is no value reward to take the family. I will spend my money where I get a bigger bang for my buck. It is unfortunate because I used to love Disney.
Disney doesn’t deserve the rights to their old works, it’s crazy how long they’ve stretched their copyright and now we have to help them defend it?! These movies should be free and in the public domain for all to enjoy for free
They cannot extend the copyright again. It will NOT be allowed. It will not be tolerated in this day and age of easy internet access. Sorry, I and millions will stop it, trust me on that one. Disney knows this, and will not try that tactic again.
What they did, quickly animate Steamboat Willy’s Mickey into a cartoon. That will help a little bit. They could claim that someone is using that one, probably not successfully, but they could do it.
But more realistically, they own the trademark on the name “Mickey Mouse”, you start to brand things with a public domain version of Mickey, they can come after you. If you make a horror fill titled “Steam Boat Willy” with a mouse character that looks very much like “Steam Boat Willy”, well people will just roll their eyes and move on with their life. I think Disney will just live with it and continue to use stories of other people’s work that are in the public domain… The animated musical “The Great Gaspy” is coming I’m sure of it.
Please don’t erase Walt Disney’s history. None of it. Mickey Mouse or any of it. So many will be sad and hurt. I have 5 girls and they look up to Mickey and Minnie Mouse and all theor friends.
I personally think that if Disney is still going on they should be able to keep ALL their rights to their characters it is awful that people would do anything to destroy someone’s creation just to make money or be down right mean. After all Disney has been doing so well at keeping them safe and entertaining. The only thing that I would like to say is that ” think of how you would feel about it if you were to go back in time to when you were a kid and see your favorite character act bad and saying things that you would never hear or see like what they are trying to do to Winnie the Pooh would you still like them but also think how Christopher Robin and his father, and Walt Disney are seeing this from heaven.
Don’t forget you will be seeing them when you go.
So just ask your self these things, I mean it’s good to think that you can have them live the way you want them to but what about them and everything they stand for.
As for me I say they should be taking out of public domain for the characters protection it’s not just about right or wrong it’s about the characters way, the way that the creator wanted them to be not US
The people running Disney are running it to the ground. Walt Disney would be devastated. Shame on them. All they care about is money. They have millions and want millions more. Shame.
Great argument on Disney’s side, but it’s just an emotional appeal for monopolies and hoarding. I am PARTICULARLY against forever copyright for this, or any, studio given it owns almost everything anymore
I really hope that something can be done to keep Mickey Mouse and all of the other Disney Characters safe from entering public domain, but if that happens I hope that whoever decides to use any of the characters for films or shows, or whatever, that they DO NOT turn them into drug addicts, sexual predators, or any type of criminal. Keep them pure for children like they are now. There are so many people out there in the world right now turning children’s cartoon characters into bad or evil characters and that is not what anyone should be doing.
I do think Disney needs to fix the laws because I mean horror movies about the Disney characters like Bambi? Come on, bud, no one needs to see that. That’s how I know Disney needs to be protected. And Mickey Mouse should not go away, and he isn’t, right? Cause I want him to stay at Disney and make more movies and shows and everything! Please change this. Thanks!
I think changing copyright length for all copyrights is not the right direction. It’s already 95 years, and many works are created by authors who have passed away and the works are no longer in circulation due to copyright making them difficult to access. Instead, maybe the law should be amended to allow for copyrights to be registered and registration extended annually by the copyright holder behind the initial 95 year copyright length.
Disney should not be able to hold copyright indefinitely. It’s the very reason copyright was set as it was – to break the stranglehold of the literary guilds in Europe at the time. It also isn’t a bad thing.
“The primary objective of copyright is not to reward the labor of authors, but “[t]o promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.” To this end, copyright assures authors the right to their original expression, but encourages others to build freely upon the ideas and information conveyed by a work. This result is neither unfair nor unfortunate. It is the means by which copyright advances the progress of science and art.” – Sandra Day O’Connor, former SCOTUS Justice
As I see it Disney products are so expensive (Disney world and Disneyland) that the every day family can’t afford to go, Maybe if they cut prices and returned to the old family ethics, more people would care about what happens to Disney

We need Mickey Mouse to stay with Disney, as should Winnie the Pooh and all their other good characters.
