The problem with streaming services, is big studios like Disney don’t do the math at all. They spend more on content for the service each year than subscriptions make them
Oh, wow Jim, how insightful. Being such a financial visionary, you should contact Disney and ask for a consultant position. I’m sure when you explain the concept of “Accounting” they will jump on the opportunity to hire you.
Cutting shows we start to love or really look forward to watching, makes us want to cancel subscription. Not a smart move. If you cut to much what’s the point?
Well….. I’ve loved Disney since the late 60’s when I would watch The Wonderful World of Disney, every Sunday night.
As an adult, still to this day, I love Disney. I’m a Disney movie club member (I’m a VIP) and I’ve got Disney movies coming out my.… EARS. Most everything Disney I collect.
HOWEVER, time to think about dropping the + and moving on. Perhaps Netflix or HBO/MAX.
If Disney+ is getting rid of stuff, time to rethink the money out of pocket. What will Disney get rid of next? I am starting to see less BANG for my buck. And when I start losing or not enjoying, time to start checking other streaming services.
Disney+ increases subsciber fees almost 50% and removes content from the service. Why would we pay more for less? Disney should cut the subscriber fees 75% to reflect the true value to the subscriber. No more magic at Disney…
The reason Disney+ lost subscribers is because of various issues from political stance, poor storytelling, anger at ruining content, lack of male inclusivity, overall price. It is not just one thing, but the lack at addressing many and continuing down those proverbial paths knowing it has damaged your brands.
Maybe the poster mentioning Netflix and other streaming services has it right, leasing content to others. Or maybe Disney needs to create one streaming service instead of maintaining two, but it may not be enough either.
No easy answers, but as long as this nation is divided on ideological issues catering to one or the other instead of finding a balance will continue to cause issues long-term, ending content people like can do more immediate damage in my opinion.
Last friday we recieved an email stating that our renewal would be going from 79.99 to 109.99 yearly on September 7. A thirty dollar a year increase with less content (now and moving forward) is a deal breaker for us. So after being in the first wave of signing up for the service when launch, we are done for now. At this cost, it will be better to wait until multiple shows I want to see have new content and then just sign up for a couple of months to watch them and drop the service again.
This sort of stuff is exactly why many people choose to download, archive, and view shows on their own terms, bypassing the streaming services altogether. As a media corporation who exercises total control over your content, taking away the content that many people willingly pay for is exactly the motivation for those loyal customers to download that content from non-legal sources.
The Walt Disney Company may disappear in the future! Winnie the Pooh and Mickey Mouse may move to another company! I will be passed away after going to Japan, Singapore, Europe, Ireland, England, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand in the future. I will be no longer to go to Knoxville in the future.
The streaming model is unsustainable in its current form. They’re acting like D+ is the only streaming outlet that’s cutting content. They’re ALL cutting content AND raising prices. To brutally honest the stuff that they’re cutting was trash anyway.
Instead of giving the people what they want, Disney/Iger continues down a path of stubborn self-destruction. Don’t the shareholders have anything to say about Iger’s anti-business approach and ineptitude?
Like so many others, I do not consume any entertainment offered by the Woke Disney Corporation, so the fact that they are removing streaming content on channels I refuse to subscribe to means nothing to me. Go woke, go broke. It’s a thing that will catch up to Woke Disney sooner rather than later.
I know exactly why they’re subscriptions went down. It was because they raised their prices. And they haven’t learned yet because they just raising them more. And if they raise it anymore I know I will not pay it especially when they’re charging more and we’re getting less for it!
Yeah I cancelled. I was on the anny plan that cost $79.99. They notified me it was going up to $109.99. That’s over a 25% increase. You know what, I might have stayed subscribed if I could have kept the price or even a discount for customer loyalty. Now their reaction is to remove the content that has kept their remaining subscribers. I just don’t get these streaming sites.
I cancelled my Disney+ subscription immediately after Gina Carano was fired from her role on The Mandalorian. Not getting to keep up with the Marvel movies and series was the only thing I really missed, but once they killed off Iron Man, that wasn’t worth watching either.
While most of the TV shows (for example Willow, Turner& Hooch) and movies( Star girl, and it’s sequel) you listed were removed some (Highschool Musical The Musical: The Series) are still there and getting another season.
Disney+ can fk off. I’m cancelling it immediately. I don’t pay good money for a service to reduce content. I signed up for content. Take content away (regardless if I watch it) I go away. Pretty simple. There are dozens of other streaming sites! Blow me Disney!
The biggest issue is that our government allows tax breaks for companies to cancel or remove content. It should never be more profitable for a company to take content that makes even a penny and get millions of tax breaks.
This is as bad as government making it more profitable for some farmers to destroy crops rather then sell them.
This isn’t new. All streamers have been doing this. Max and D+ moreso recently. When a show is on streaming even if no one watches it they have to pay license fees to the producers etc. For example, let’s say netflix made a deal to have guardians 3 on NF. Even if no watches, they would have to pay the monthly or yearly fee to disney since disney made and owns guardians 3. But if a show is removed completely so no one can see it, they don’t have to pay anymore. That’s it. Shows that don’t bring in New ppl in high numbers and existing members aren’t watching in high numbers get dropped.
This is different than the store model. Google and apple don’t pay to keep a title in their stores to sell. Money only moves when someone buys it so they are happy to keep as much as they can for ppl to buy anytime.
Several producers/directors talked about this a few months ago. Newer pll I’m the jndustey who aren’t massive rich etc that income they had stopped when their projects got removed.
Bob Iger is a very poor businessman and another one of these people who have never created a thing but put in charge of the fates of endless people’s creations.
I’ve been annoyed that there is no Hulu in Canada for a long time. My Little Pony was one of my son’s favourite shows to watch and we spent an incredible amount of time in Ponyville together. All of a sudden, gone from Netflix and moved to Hulu with the final season we never got to see and not available anywhere but Hulu.
Now he’s destroying all sorts of other people’s enjoyment, as well. I, personally, don’t enjoy much of the programming other than The Mandalorian but I still think people should have options.
Maybe don’t overextended yourself next time, Bobby and you won’t have to come back with your tail between your legs.
Also, stop milking two cows (Marvel and Star Wars) thinking they will give milk forever.
With the exceptions of star girl and national treasure the rest were poor poor thought shallow and woke adaptations forced for the sole purpose of money grab and the depth of a 4th movie in a trilogy but less interest. I say good ridence
This will just remind everyone to go back to piracy instead…All streaming services are dropping content never to be seen legaly again..so why bother… Just download everything instead and be sure to keep it and it will remain your own library…
Go woke, go broke. Disney used to be family friendly. Not anymore. Diversity and Inclusion also became more important than good story telling. Marvel has been called The M -She-U. Star Wars is pure Trash thanks to Kathleen Kennedy. Disney needs to go Bankrupt to send the message that we are tired of the Californication of everything.
Disney has changed so much. We loved Disney and were excited to get Disney+. We enjoyed Mysterious Mr. Benedict Society and were looking forward to the next season. Then we got hooked on National Treasure and were waiting for it to come back on. Now we see they cancelled it. I wish they followed Walt’s ideals and provided FAMILY entertainment and did not focus ONLY on what profits them. Profit is needed but the cost of their profit is WAY TOO HIGH.
The reason Disneylost a another of subscribers is because the raised their prices touch. Now if they continue to cut content they will lose even more subscribers. Disney apparently needs new management.
