Animation(all types) takes time and its not the same as Live action where you can reshoot several times in hours. That said ,no artists wants to waste their time on either on bad “art’ work or parts of a movie they won’t use or cut for time. I hope this will all get worked out.
Welcome to the workforce. Overtime is nothing new, many jobs/careers require it at times. But I have noticed many of the younger people crying that it is “too hard” and that they have no life. Welcome to adulthood. Overtime sucks, workers don’t want to put in the hours and employers don’t want to pay them extra hours but it is necessary at times to meet demands.
I so agree. People complain they dont make enough so you give them more hours and they are still not happy. I killed for overtime more money in most jobs. I work 2 full time jobs and a part time one in my 20’s so i could make good money for my wife and kids to be. Doing that gave me options in the working field to get better jobs because of my work ethic now im making decent money not as hard labor. Now i just have to deal with whining younger people saying 28 hours is to many hours but i need more money
Congrats man! What some don’t seem to understand is that most larger companies are employed by an older generation because THEY WORKED TO GET THERE. Nobody starts off as a CEO making millions. My dad ended his career as the Director of Engineering for a $40 billion company, but he put in a ton of hours to get to that point.
The world.today is beyond ridiculous. 11 hour workdaysis not that bad. can it suck? Of course. But life isn’t supposed to be easy. I work retail and have 11 hour shifts sometimes. It happens.
I mean, sometimes it’s not about how they don’t want to work overtime anymore. If you work overtime constantly without having proper rest, time for family and friends, etc, will the work result be as good as happy and healthy worker? I don’t think so
That’s not what people are complaining about…maybe some are, but the main argument is the fact that jobs want us to do 2 to 4 people’s worth of work in 1 normal work day, I’ve had 3 jobs in a row like that because the companies saved money just making us work more with no additional income for doing so. GenX and Boomers are destroying the market because they want to pocket all this damn money while the government goes broke, the job and house market gets destroyed, and you SOMEHOW find a way to blame younger generations.
I feel bad that natural selection isn’t doing what it was supposed to, covid was a good attempt to fix our current issues lmao
Show me a government in the western world going broke?? Boomers and GenX paved the way for people like you to have the things you have. Working long shifts (10hr+ shifts is pretty standard across the board), especially in retail/hospitality isnt uncommon, n has been the norm for decades.. why is it only these last 10 years or so it’s become an issue?? Because the younger gens have no patience or work ethic.. it has to come easy and it has to come now.
I agree. These people on social media complain about anything that requires more than a nominal amount of work. I spent some time working in Hollywood on films, and I routinely worked 14-18 hours per day, 5-7 days per week. Keep in mind, after movies are complete, some people working on these movies go on unemployment because they’re labeled as “contractors”. I eventually left, not because the hours sucked, but because the community as a whole sucked.
I understand being over worked, I’m in construction and from 11 to 15 hours days 7 days a week outside in the heat and cold. So hearing that someone is upset that they have to sit at a desk inside in the AC for 11 hours doesn’t really move me. BUT!! When you force people to rush their work, no matter what kind it it, you will always sacrifice the quality. If the say the can’t get it done in the time you allow with out that sacrifice, then you need to Alot more time.
I agree to a point. I, too, work construction (electrical) and when I was younger, would easily do 50-60+ hours a week. Though now, I’ve gotten smarter. I don’t need more money. I’m perfectly happy with 40 hour checks and I make sure management knows it. But at the same time, I make sure the quality of my work exceeds those that “volunteer” for the overtime. I’ve had foreman tell me that it’s mandatory and I just laugh and tell them I’m not doing it and to fire me if they don’t like it. I haven’t been fired yet. I don’t consider myself a “cry baby” or whatever others are calling it. I do overtime if the job/company warrant that sort of loyalty. I.E., they don’t wait until we’re 6 months behind and 1 week before deadline to do anything. And the one time they did try and force me, I proved to them that all the studies that show a decrease in productivity & quality were 100% true.
As far as the animators situation go, you have a point that they’re in an Air Conditioned office for those 11 hours, so little sympathy from me for that. But 7 days a week? That’s uncalled for. Every human needs rest. One day to reset and relax. Quality of work will increase greatly. And if ATSV was this good with these conditions, imagine how much better it could’ve been with a well-rested production team?
End of the day though, I wouldn’t be opposed with a delay of a year or two. Their work may not be physically exhausting, but there is a mental strain there and with that I sympathize. Sony makes enough money that they can treat these human beings better. Just reading the comments, it sounds like that while everyone worked hard and long hours, what was the cost? No offense intended, but everyone sounds like grouchy old men. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want that for me or anyone else. Upon retirement, I still want to be happy. I don’t need billions or even millions. All i need is contentment.
You do know office workers have the highest suicide rate amongst all career types due to the mental stress out weighing physical fatigue. When you are stuck in the same room every day for long hours degrades ones mental state faster then a common laborer because of very common factors. Office workers tend to have very little color to their surroundings. A lack of change in their allowed routines. Little to no strenious physical activity to release mentally stabilizing hormones. Much higher stress levels than physical labor jobs acquainted to a higher demand on project / quota completion. Then you have another factor the average office worker will typically have to work even on off hours unlike a laborer. Then there is the fact that office work is a extremely high turnover rate simply because each office worker “is” replaceable regardless of experience or talent.
There’s a finite budget and investors that expect a return in a timely manner. You can’t just say “take your time I don’t want employees to suffer” that’s insane! This whole way of coddling everyone is nuts too! It’s called “work” for a reason!!!
Time is money, you can’t just delay stuff forever, and these animators probably go months on unemployment between jobs so no sympathy. Work hard for the reward. They wouldn’t quit if they didn’t have some safety net from a socialist government or rich parents.
I’d like to add that the movie is currently sitting at #12 on IMDB’s top 250 movies of all time. Not top 250 animated, not top 250 action, not top 250 super hero, it’s top 250 ever!! That is a huge accomplishment, of course it’s going to be a hard road to reach that kind of praise.
It’s already not going to be released until 2026 so I’m not sure where all this fluff is coming from, feels like a Disney spin piece to make themselves look better after screwing the pooch on a 2024 promise.
What’s with old people being so hell bent on “life is hard” “that’s just how it is”.
Why? Why does life and work need to be extra hard? Don’t you WANT work to be an easy going fun place to be? Why do you people want difficult workplaces? Life doesn’t need to be like that. Get out of that 1960s mindset.
Am I the only person who didn’t walk up hill in the snow both ways to school? You all act like being forced to work 11-hour days, seven days a week for four years is no big deal. I’d bet most of you couldn’t do it.
This has nothing to do with kids crying on social media. People shouldn’t comment without knowing the facts.
I’m a seasoned motion graphics designer. I’ve been working for this industry for about 20 years. Abusing designers or animators time, without paying OT, is the norm in this industry. It’s not a matter of being scared about hard work, it’s about being fair. No one wants to spend countless hours, in some cases literally killing themself due to the restless work, and the nights spent in front of a computer, without even the right retribution (you read it right, paid OT are hardly a thing in this business).
And most of the times it gets frustrating as you realize you’re working your a** off because someone above you didn’t bother making a decision, or checking what’s going on.
Also, just so you know, this is not supposed to be like a factory job, where you punch-in and out without caring about what you do. You put passion and sweat into this job. When it becomes humiliating it affects your soul.
As a veteran I learnt how to get a thick skin, but youngers are more vulnerable, and you can’t blame them, they lack the life experience to react to certain type of situations.
So, before you judge people in a rushed way, get educated on what the actual situation really is, and only then speak.
These people complain that AI will take their job, but then they complain that they can’t handle doing their job. This is only motivating companies to replace as soon as tech gives them ability to do it.
This has nothing to do with kids crying on social media. People shouldn’t comment without knowing the facts.

It’s the issue with old people, they equate something they don’t understand to something they do….they worked for a living and made decent money, but that’s clearly not how things are working ESPECIALLY not in a creative field like this.
I’m going into game development and the amount of companies offering SALARY (meaning I don’t get paid for overtime yet am still forced to work crunch) is ridiculous. Literally coming from people the same age as these comments that think “It’s just kids crying!” when they’ve never had to experience it since they were babied their entire life. They think having to do 11 hours of manual labor is the same as a 2 year stint of 6 to 7 days a week at a desk while being screamed at for not making a masterpiece fast enough then being forced to throw it away to save time/money.
I am 57 and I work very hard at what I do. I refuse to go overboard for another persons benefit anymore tho. I so not give free labor time anymore and I am okay with being fired. But I do not get fired. I make sure I get paid what I am worth.
Regarding animators and how they are complaining about work conditions and all, I personally know many people in this industry. For all of you complaining that they are whiney… shut your mouths. Animators may sit at a desk which you think is easy but it shows you know nothing. Sitting in front of a computer for 12 hours a day is very bad for health. Like blood circulation which can pool in the lower body and kill you. Not to mention some of these guys sleep under their desks and dont leave the office for days at a time. Thats what happens during crunch time. Also the amount of money made is small and when you compare that to hours there it is not worth it. In fact I guarantee that every person laughing here would be among those “crying” if you were suddenly doing that job.
Here is the truth, Jobs do not pay good enough for people to survive in society. Nobody wants to work multiple full time jobs because that is an ignorant Idea. I give you 40 hours I get paid enough to pay bills. if you cant pay it, screw you. see how long you can do it by yourself.
Younger people do work hard but are not interested in being a wage slave like the rest of us. I dont blame them. Demand better, get better. We older generations never seemed to figure that out. Thats why all of the work benefits we -used to get- no longer exist. we allowed greedy people to take them away while we continue to work hard with no true benefit in sight. Maybe put more critical thought into things before running your mouths about what you so not know or understand.
