Animatronics of course are better and shoukd be the primary focus of the attraction and secenes within the attraction. Projection should onky be used as a supplemental effects too to produce effects to time consuming and technological impossible to pull off.
In film and TV CGI started off as a supplemental tool that was used for tidious boring animation/effect work.. However as the studios saw budget savings CGI became the primary focus replacing practical effects thus replacing costly practical effects and costly time frames.
Same as in attractions projections are now a cost effective primary tool. Where attractions have projections almost 50-100% of the attraction. For example Toy Story Mania at WDW Studios Park. The que line is actually more immersive with practical props/effects, than the ride which is all projection.
Projection in attractions, means projected profits and how cheap theme parks can get a themed attraction up and running with low costs by uaing projection.
Cost cutting measures save cost, but result in lower long term profit, lower long term interest of people who go to the parks, and becomes then, if they wanna see projections go to the movie theater.
