Here is the bottom line… Before Bob C., Disney played the political game well. They made a big deal about their parks being free of politics when you visited and followed it up by not only not taking any political position on anything. It is well documented that they gave money to BOTH political parties to keep getting a lot of privileges other companies didn’t have—lots of them.
Then Bob C screwed it up. Even though his own director of communications/PR told him not to, he came out on the side of a highly controversial political issue that was in direct conflict with the current governor and the state senate, where there is a super-majority with the governor. This means they can pass ANY laws they want.
But instead of just taking a position… which was bad enough, Bob C doubled down. He said not only would Disney no longer give money to those supporting those opinions, but they would sell merch in the parks where the money would go to the political entities that opposed them.
I am still trying to understand why Bob C did this. There are so many ways he could have worked against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill without hurting the company at all… Iger and Eisner did it all the time. They were both Democrats and liberal thinkers. It was never an issue with them. They often supported these issues and supported LGBT+ interests without hurting the company as they had done in the past.
Let’s give a real-world example. You are at a bar and tipping the bartender every time you bought a drink. Because of that, the bartender was giving you and your friends free drinks every so often and letting everyone sit in the best seat in the bar. But, if you stopped tipping the bartender and at the same time punched the owner of the bar in the face because they called a friend of yours a name. Even though you were sticking up for them, would you still expect them to give you and your friends free drinks? No, the person you punched owns the bar. Even though you did the right thing sticking up for someone, they would stop even selling you drinks, much less giving you free ones, and you and your friends would get kicked out by the bar staff who the owner has control of, even if you left first in hopes that your friends could stay.
Right or wrong, Bob C punched Ron DeSantis in the face, the owner of the bar. Even though Bob C was the one that punched Ron and left the bar quickly, Disney, along with Bob I, got kicked out of the bar with him. But Bob I is continuing the fight outside the bar with the owner and staff, the Florida Senate, and joining in to defend the owner and fight, wince he pays them. Even though the guy that started it Bob C left and is nowhere to be found, Bob I decided to stay and continue the fight with the Florida Senate and Ron even though they are badly outnumbered and already beaten up.
This has already been very bad for Disney and Bob I. continuing the fight will not end well for Disney, even if they are on the right side.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out. In a court of law, it will be viewed that Desantis refused to recognize one’s liberty of Free Speech, and found ways to punish & retaliate. Just because he’s governor doesn’t mean he has the privilege of taking away one’s liberties. He is not at LIBERTY to do this to anyone. If I want to voice my opinion about what laws Desantis passes it is my right. I fear a person like him is very dangerous and has no place in our government. After all, where does it stop?
There are things about Disney I disagree with as there are things about Desantis I disagree with.
Ultimately, Desantis was the aggressor and is the arrogant one, not Disney. Disney exercised there freedoms, Desantis did not like that and thought it was ok to pick a fight. It’s not ok! DeSantis refused to accept an invitation from B. Iger to discuss a problem on a much smaller scale than let’s say foreign policies with other countries, then he definitely is not the person to sit for any part of government. He is not a true leader!
