I have to use a scooter to get around. 99% of the people who use them are responsible drivers. The other 1% either are new to driving or are under the influence. Some don’t even need them and just use them because they are lazy. I have seen MANY parents who allow their kids to run freely and don’t watch where they are going. The fault is mostly on the parents
Unfortunately, you never know why someone may be using a scooter, too look at me, you wouldn’t necessarily know that I have a knee issue caused by one of the worst cable car accidents in San Francisco history when I was 8 that make it now necessary to use an ECV for me to be able to do theme parks and the like.
I have used Disney’s scooters they have a governor on them, you can walk faster than they go at top speed so that article fabricated the facts. The little girl stepped in front of the scooter I had people do that all day lost my party twice because people walk in front of you.
You have to watch out for kids.. They dart out right in front on you.. I was there a couple weeks ago people need to watch out we have the right to be there.
Keep your eyes open and watch your kids..
This story is a non story literally just meant to sensationalize something sounds to me the parent should take better care to teach their kid to look both ways and I say this as a parent myself had my daughter been hit it would have been herself when you say a scooter at full speed you are talking usually less than 10 mph injuries would have been minor at best
This was a non-event. I don’t know how many times I have been run over (painfully, I might add) by clueless parents and their needlessly enormous strollers. They will clip you in the Achilles tendon and just keep going.
I use a scooter due to a bone problem in my feet and my partner uses one because his feet are messed up from an accident that almost amputated them. When it comes down to it, just like driving a car, you have to be aware of your surroundings.
If a pathway is clear, sure, go top speed if you want, but if there are people around slow down. There were times, before I had to use a scooter, that I would be walking and scooters would just come zooming and the person driving just does not care whether they hit someone.
The little girl is just being a kid who is at Disneyland experiencing a magical time, she’s probably not thinking about watching out at the moment because she’s so excited and having so much fun.
When it comes down to it, like I said, just be aware of your surroundings and be responsible when driving a scooter.
At Epcot there is a lane for wheelchairs and scooters to enter/ exit the land pavilion but walking people don’t care or don’t pay attention and use it anyway then they get annoyed when they have to move so a wheelchair or scooter can pass. So why should Disney paint lines on the walkways if people aren’t going to respect them.
First of all the mother said she uses a scooter because she is pregnant so the kid should know how to behave around the area and look before running. Secondly, the parent should be watching the area for scooters as well knowing the kid could come running back to her with excitement from the experience.
Third, from the video it appears the roped off area is behind the cast members not where the kid was running. As a scooter user the Disney scooters have a very slow speed limit on them to help prevent accidents. This appears to be a non-Disney scooter so the person driving it should have slowed down.
Finally, I think the cast members are at fault for having a play area in the middle of a walkway. They should know people both in scooters and walking will go through it to get around the crowd.
If it’s roped off for the kids and cast members to interact, scooters and pedestrians need to go around not through. The scooter is to blame here not the child.
It is absolutely Scootermageddon in the Parks and Resorts (not just Disney). And while you should never challenge why someone is using one I have seen whole ENTIRE families including teenagers together on scooters. I have also seen this at our favorite wholesale club. If you don’t physically need one you should not rent them for the parks as they can be dangerous and combined with a double-wide stroller epidemic it is utter chaos! There just isn’t enough room.
A little fault is in everyone’s court here. The scooter was definitely going too fast, and the rider should have been very aware of a small child (let’s face it; no matter how many times you tell them to look, they never freaking do). And the parents should have been aware of the surroundings, knowing their kid was never going to look around.
I know lots of people who don’t “look as if they need a scooter” actually need a scooter. They should move slowly because the parks are total chaos. And I’d like to chip in my two cents about the worse issue: the SUV stroller crowd who barrel through the park as if they own the place. My adult daughter has never had a single visit when she didn’t get slammed in the back of the legs by a stroller.
Let me shed my opinion on this. First did anyone notice that the camera for the video is on the scooter? So, I believe that this is bogus. I am not even sure if the videos are the same. I been injured more by strollers. Maybe all people with strollers should be MADE to watch a safety presentation as well.
Hard to believe they had convenient small trams INSIDE the 1964-1965 NY world’s fair!! & $2 to get in the fair! (look for those small trams at Disney & Universal – ha ha), as well those from the ’39 ny fair still in use on the Wildwood NY boardwalk.
You’ll be lucky if there is a tram from the parking lot to the gate at Disney! & None at all at Universal.

Both parties have responsibilities here and neither of them met them.
You need be aware of your surroundings no matter if you are waling or on an ECV.

As they drove around a cordoned off area, the scooter is at fault

Disneyland is a place for kids to run freely.

Why not paint a lane line for EV Scooters only ? I guess it’s too costly

No, the problem is some parents thinking the park is their personal baby sitter, and allow the kids to run free.
