giving the child a scolding is ok, taking them away from a dinner table so others can enjoy their meal, telling them NO is ok and maybe even a little smack on the hand is ok, but whipping them with a dog leash is NOT ok…….If a child continues to misbehave then take them back to their hotel room for a time out for a while……..Believe me we had a 9 yr old with us that was terrible the first two days, we were ready to go home. ( we had reservations for 9 days) BUT I took him to our hotel, gave him a time out………Spoke with him and we changed our plans to let him make a few decisions on what to do at t he parks , we let him choose what restraunt he wanted to eat at once a day and we had no more problems…….Let your child help you plan the day, give him or her options and maybe that will help………
Lorraine, thank you for the thoughtful tips on catering to a insolent child. But if a 9 year old acts up like a toddler, sounds like you started “parenting” a little late and have bigger problems than a little “smack on the hand” will fix.
9 yr olds often act up as much as toddlers. I thought Lorraine did a superb job and I wish I had her advising me when mine were small. It sure beats slapping a child with a dog leash! The adult male in that episode was the one acting like a toddler. The officer should have used the dog leash on him!
Nobody said it was his child and if it was and that. Child did not mind I’m not saying he should be slapped with a leash but spanked right then and there that is the probably with these kids spare the rod spoil the child but I say spare the rod ruin the child it didn’t kill me to get a spanking.
Appears that this might have been a misstep by the boy as well. Disney has so many overwhelming sights that I have often seen all ages of people move toward whatever captures their attention at that time. Whacking a child in the face with enough force to leave a welt sure seems excessive. And bravo to the Disney worker who reported it.

If a person would do this to a child in front of the public, I can’t even the abuse that happens at home. Sad.
