Zach, as a first time visitor in 1971 as a 5 year old, I can add my own thoughts in addition to your fine thoughts. I loved the scary rides. Back in the 1990s especially, Disney World went the opposite route getting rid of the scary stuff. Mr. Toads and especially Snow White’s Scary Adventure and other scary rides either had to be eliminated or completely made over and changed because they were “too scary”. I remember thinking how ridiculous that was. Snow White’s ride had a complete makeover in either the late 80s or early 90s. Mr. Toads, one of the most popular attractions, was completely eliminated. But there is one more thing. Disney incorporated humor into all of their rides too in sone kind of way. Look at the Haunted Mansion for example. The words on the graves and the hitchhiking ghosts, and many things in it are humorous. Couple that with a happy ending like you mentioned, and you get a creative fun and scary in a sense ride.

I could just imagine young kids experiencing
    ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter
    back in the day.
