I would have responded to the employees by saying, “Oh, ok, I understand. I’ll just wait here for my husband to wait his turn to get here. Thank you.”
What ever “communication” problem there was, should never have been in the first place.
One thing guests do not like above all is others cutting in line, whether real or perceived. So the employee was probably tired of standing all day, in the heat listening to guests complain, that they assumed this is what was happening and said something. Just Move on and enjoy your meal.
