If each boat has a weight limit, Disney can easily install a scale at its loading spot to let the attendant know if the weight limit has been exceeded and allow the attendant to adjust the seating at boarding before the ride even attempts to move. This would keep from embarrassing guests and eliminate this type of ride delay in the future. Since America has undeniably gotten heavier since the 1960’s when this ride was introduced, Disney may want to consider this issue when developing new rides or updating old ones in the future.
It’s really odd if it’s a weight issue. Since in the past I’ve seen it filled to the max along with folks on a wheelchair. Could it be more maintenance issues? Since a lot of attractions are having faulty issues.
It’s not often something that can be easily guesstimated visually, especially not once guests are seated. Taller people can weigh significantly more than shorter people even without appearing overweight. Some body types can hide an extra 60 lbs really well, especially with some types of clothing. With a capacity of 16 people, an extra 60 lbs per person could easily add up to half a ton more than expected. Even with a few children to balance things out, the wild swing between the perceived combined weight and actual weight of passengers can overload the ride, especially ones that may be more sensitive to the positioning of the weight (more in back than in front, etc).
Let’s face ot… Fat is fat.. you want to carry yourself at 400 plus pound, stay on the sidelines ..same for plane seats ,busses,
trains can haul tons though…. ect… we don’t need scales on every ride, that is unless you want to fat shame before you get in the ride.
Fat shame how? The scale doesn’t need to be where patrons can see it, cast members don’t have to say anything, and they can easily ask skinny people to wait for the next boat to reduce the weight. There doesn’t have to be a scale at every boat, just at the boarding stations, and the readout behind the podium.
For that ride individual weight matters less than group weight, scales for those types of rides weigh the group and give either a red or green light depending on if the group is to heavy for the ride.
Instead of refurbishing rides to appease the outraged, wokel yokels in this world, how about refurbishing and renovating them to accept America’s growing girth? Does anyone honestly think the citizens of the US or even the world are going to get any smaller or smarter any time soon??? If you do you’re an idiot and probably half a whale too boot.
Millions of these boats must have passed through that ride over the years without this ever happening before, and Disney’s maintenance efforts are notoriously not what they used to be. Got to be a maintenance issue over a weight issue. Either that, or Disney needs to start retrofitting these boats to fit elephants.

Hey it’s they it is. No big deal rides have weight limits people…

It’s not only about weight. It’s about a balance of the weight.
If the weight is not properly balanced across the boat it will not float properly.
Part of it means redesigning the boats, or redesigning the track.
I remember going with family and us being spaced across the whole boat so it would float properly. Even though we normally would fit in one row.
Cast members do their best.

Yes,. That is is a great idea. They weigh trucks like that, just in a smaller scale. Perfect idea.

Fat people should not be allowed in public. They at least serve as a cautionary tale for everyone else.
