I told you they would get to it in Japan. Disney’s wokism is too extreme to consider anything off limits, even if it ends up harming their business relationships.
I think a lot of people don’t realize that initially Walt Disney had promised that when he made the movie Song of the South it would not show slaves as happy go lucky. He lied. And the movie was protested by different civil rights groups. It’s in the Disney Vault never to be sold by Disney again.
Song of the South takes place after the slaves have been free. It’s the story of a former slave who teaches a white child life through stories involving Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear among others.
Exactly! Removing this ride&happy song and sweet characters is beyond Sad! If they are removin it they should replace it with a ride that has a water flume!
You so right about that. People look at it like it’s wrong it’s live . The American Indian never cries about it but the United States government basically exterminated them. No one cry about them.
That’s as may be, but it’s not stated anywhere in the movie. The only reason anyone would know it is if they happened to be a fashion historian and could tell the date from the costume styles. And pretending that an oppressed and exploited but technically emancipated workforce are happy as clams with their situation is only marginally better than pretending enslaved people are happy to be enslaved.
What Mark said is exactly correct. People need to get over it. It’s a fun ride. If the Disney Company has nothing better to do, they should retheme that stupid autopia ride.
Wokism at it again. I’m glad I enjoyed the traditional Disneyland of the past, before it all went to heck. Way too expensive now. Been there done that. I’ll spend my money elsewhere.
Well if they must change it(stupid in my opinion) they could have found something better than princess and the frog. My kids and grandkids didn’t really care for that movie. Not everything has to be replaced with a black representative there are other races/ethnicities out there other than black and white that also deserve to be included.
Which princess asociated with water appropriate for a flume ride would you replace it with, taking into account princess in the frog is heavily set in the Louisiana rivers and swamps
Curious, why does it have to be a princess? Why even bring gender into the discussion? But here are some better or equally as good themed ideas: Moana. Pocahontas. The Rescuers. Atlantis. The Little Mermaid. Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Fantasia. Fantasia 2k. Lilo and Stitch. Finding Nemo. Finding Dory. Raya. Luca. All of them have a significant water scene/theme some obviously moreso than PatF.
Splash Mountain is such an iconic ride so I hope the new ride is the same idea but just with different characters. They could still call it Splash mountain or Tiana’s splash mountain, no need to completely change the name or the basics of the ride. Most people today don’t know who Br’er rabbit and Br’er bear are anyway so refreshing it with more contemporary and recognizable characters isn’t a bad idea anyway, as long as it’s not a completely different ride. I love splash mountain.
It’s not like there’s some kind of shortage of great songs in Disney’s library. They’re not going to replace it with a moment of silence or something. It’s well past time to relegate the minstrel show to history, where it belongs.
Melissa, most die-hard Disney people disagree with you. My mother will still be proudly displaying her Brer Rabbit, Fox and Bear on a little wooden bench in her house. Kids have no idea what movie the ride is about but like the story they get from the ride – about a rabbit outsmarting a fox and a bear. I can’t see a Princess and the Frog ride replacing that charm.
Everybody does realize that Princess and the Frog is far more racist? The mother was a servant, and that white family has lavish parties and never help Tiana—how about the Hispanic lead, aka-the frog—Cultural appropriation much? He made to be a fool.
The man who played Uncle Remus deserves to not be forgotten—erasing his song, erases him. Think about it.
The actor who played Uncle Remus received an “HONORARY” ACADEMY AWARD for the role, making him the first African American man to receive an OSCAR. Sidney Poitier was the 1st African Americans man to WIN an ACADEMY AWARD.
I always find it humorous when Disney tries to act as if Song of the South never really existed at all. Millions of people remember it fondly, only In the last few years has it become a taboo subject for the execs
Totally agree. I am sure the man that played Uncle Remus as well as the lady who portrayed Aunt Jemima would be very angry at the removal of their work. Please wake up America and voice your concern over this CANCEL CULTURE!!!!!
Walt Disney would be so upset with the way his company is being dismantled!
Height of stupidity!!! It is Avery happy uplifting ,generic song for everyone! It is a crime that Disney idiots are destroying all the good andwonder of Disney! Everyone Italk withagrees ….Disney is destroying the magic, no longer great !!!!
I agree 100% — to remove a particular song because it happens to have been a part of a movie that SOME find “controversial” is patently absurd! Additionally, I’d venture to say that MOST of those visiting Disney today have never seen the movie, & that goes for those that find “Splash Mountain” “RACIST”! It seems that SOME people today go out of their way to find “something” to get “butt-hurt” over in a vain attempt at gaining attention!
Yeah, sure, nothing wrong with a song based on blackface minstrelsy. SOME people liking it is no more of a compelling reason to keep it than SOME people disliking it.
And thus the minority opinion shall always be the majority with the majority always living in fear of offending someone until someone wakes up and realizes how idiotic and illogical that is. BTW, your profile pic offends those who believe it’s religious statuary.
How do you feel about watching “old white people” get mad at what they do understand and which you obviously do not? This is about a SONG. You should read the lyrics to the song, (which you obviously never have, because it’s just a “feel good” song which has nothing to do with race), and stop making things about race when they are not. Crying “wolf” and your own brand of racism do not help “the cause,” (whatever that might be.)
Have had the movie bought in 2002.. Watched it with my son when he was 5 before he started Kinder great history lesson about what it was like after slavery. Everyone was happy.
I’m not white or old and this is beyond racist. Removing a song and story that made former slaves happy and putting a real racist ride in its place is beyond hypocritical and these woke white privileged children are canceling out all slave culture!
Yeah, trouble is, before they die off they pass on their awful values to their kids. It can take generations for positive change to take effect. But at least we’re taking steps in the right direction.
At one time I wanted to go to Disney land every day. Now I think it should be torn down. A place millions once Loved gone to hell in a hand basket because of a group of wining pathetic Kerens. Way to a**h****
Wokeness is a cancer. If we don’t call it out for the ridiculousness that it is, we can say goodbye to comedy, fun, and happiness as we all suffer together in the guilt and misery it spreads. The root of the woke movement is unhappiness, lack of self worth, and the desire to bring others down to share in their inability to ever be happy. Nothing will ever be good enough until everyone is as grumpy and mentally ill as they are. Disney caters to this vocal minority of immature ‘people’ and their constant whining. It’s up to each of us to speak up and speak out against it. There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging our past, along with its imperfections and mistakes. Erasing and ignoring this will only make it all repeat itself that much sooner.
I love the song of the south on splash mountain I always sing when I was on the ride it sucks they are changing the theming to keep the black people happy I say if this was my park I am not changing a damn thing to any of my rides.
It’s so sad that the only way you can have fun, be happy, and have self-worth is by demeaning and degrading other people. And that you don’t know the difference between acknowledging the abhorrent things about our past and celebrating them. And that you somehow believe that problems around race in America are completely in the past instead of something that many people still have to deal with every day. Pretending problems don’t exist is a pretty poor way of making them better,
Sad statement on how we must be so PC, in our world today, singing along on that ride my wife & I have watched our Six grandkids grow up in WDW being we all reside in Palm Beach. We joined DVC in 1998 since at the time it saved us some money on becoming members due to our planning of our daughters Jan 1999 wedding at Disney wedding Pavilion. In my opinion Disney has lost a lot if Walts values.
Glad I got to see the movie in the theater once. Also glad I have a copy of the book that the movie is based on. Surprised Disney hasn’t had any and all references to the movie scrubbed from the internet.
I’ve seen it, too. The thing is, beyond the fact that it has a couple of catchy songs (The most famous of which is based on a song from blackface minstrel shows) and that the integration of animation and live action is innovative and technically well done (although it would be done much better in later films such as Mary Poppins), it’s just plain and simple not that good of a movie. Certainly not good enough to overcome its problematic aspects. It’s OK, but nothing special.
This is so stupid. These were stories told by a Black man. So in essence you are canceling Uncle Remus, so in your attempt to fight racism Disney, you are being racist…
I’m so tired of everything has to change because of a culture being offended. We are going so far overboard to please blacks and those are the ones that want racism gone. Slavery is a part of history for better or worse. My ancestors were part of the Irish when they came over. They were not always welcomed. History is history. Learn from it. Disney changing things to please those that squad the loudest will cause me to not go there anymore. I don’t want to go where I feel unwelcome being white.
Thank you Dave!
This change isn’t progress. If that’s the way you think, why not toss out our entire history and go back to belonging to England.
And by the way, slavery didn’t start in America. Slaves were sold by their own people from Africa.
Given that we lost Aerosmith on the Rock and Roller Coaster, we should have Queen redo this ride with “another one bites the dust” to reflect all the woke changes at Disney.
What has this all come down to. Disney used to be the theme park that we loved. Instead it is now an embarrassment to the world. Lose woke, so making changes to everything and go back to being a family resort. Walt Disney is rolling over in his grave
What are they thinking, do they really think that everyone is going to accept this, because I don’t. I love the song of the south it brings back great memories as as kid going to Disneyland.
Can’t wait for Disney to go bankrupt went there before they went woke loved it then not now none of the people I know said they would never be back go woke go broke
By changing the theme of Splash Mountain Disney is once again ruining something magical and letting the troublemakers win. First it was the Submarines and now this. I am over Disney everything. All they care about is the mighty dollar anymore. Forget the rich tradition and history of family fun. I am so disappointed in what Disneyland Park is becoming.
The Disney glass ceiling of history has been cracked and the creeping change(s) for this ride and all others will continue. Only way to stop it his is not go to the parks and unsubscribe from Disney+. This unfortunately will not happen especially in America. So buckle up folks (and keep your hands and arms inside the ride). Soon they will ban “hand raising” on rides because it will be reminding others of WW2 gestures. Watch!!
