This is joke right? Grogu is supposed to be a ripoff from a movie that came out 4 years after Empire Strikes Back? Maybe the stupid little gremlin is a ripoff of Yoda. Mr. Dante is delusional.

    1. Robbie

absolutely correct. Gremlins is a copy of Star Wars!

      1. Kowalski

It’s a bad ripoff movie considering. Gremlins looks like it was cheaply made for drive-in screens.

      2. Larry battenfeld

What a bunch of crap. Just because he hasn’t had anything good to offer to the Cinematic Universe since 1980. He’s just trying to form a claim in order to cash in on it. Gizmo is a copy of Yoda, maybe they need to counter suit

What a joke. I understand certain circumstances where you would come forward with something years later, but plagiarism of literally your life’s work isn’t something he could’ve brought up during season 1? Smells like some bullsh.

  2. Obvious

Yes, he is a rip-off of Yoda to make him more marketable. Is that not what you meant? What are you smoking?

The author is a nitwit who writes false stories all the time. She’s not meant to be taken seriously. She never knows what she’s talking about. She should write the stories in tabloids instead of this website.

    1. The accusations were covered by multiple media outlets. The story is not false at all. The Gremlins guy is trying to cash in on Baby Yoda with a frivolous claim in the hopes he might be able to extort a settlement or even a trial with an incompetent judge and biased jury.

    2. Bj

Thank you. Yoda came before gizmo. But nobody seems to agnalage that.

      1. ReadWrite

I believe the word you’re looking for his “acknowledge,” lol.

  4. Frank

This is just some kids opinion, Not very convincing, or good reading. Stick to your libtard disney trips and do something creative with your life.

    1. Sam

Who still uses “libtard”? Lmao 🤣

  5. rrhoads

What a bogus and idiotic claim from the author of this article and the moron Joe Dante. Yoda been out since 1980 four years before Gremlins and baby Grogu is simply a copy of Yoda.

    1. The author is merely covering a news story. She herself is not accusing Disney of ripping off a Gremlins character.

  6. AH

He is entitled to his oppion even when it’s wrong. If he is so sure, he should take legal action which would, no doubt, go down in flames.

  7. If Grogu is a copy of Gizmo then then Stripe is a copy of Salacious Crumb.

    1. Old Ben

I didnt think about that…well said, no that I think about it..the green Gremlin does resemble and act like Salacious Crumb! Who stole who’s idea?? Hmmm

  8. Sherry

I don’t think Grogu is stolen for the simple fact Yoda appeared in star wars 1980 Gizmo 1984 so copied who ?

  9. TJ

This is Dante basically saying “You can’t do that, I already stole that idea, it’s mine now.”

What’s shameful is Joe Dante trying to rip attention away from someone who’s actually achieved success in the last decades. Probably in a pathetic attempt to market his upcoming “Secrets of Mogwai”.

Here is another question. If he is claiming grogu is a rip off of gizmo, then why has he waited till season 3 is close to being released? Shouldn’t he of said something during or just after season 1?

  11. Shane P Dalton

To the dude who said that, dude you do realise Empire Strikes Back and Yoda is 4 or 5 years older then Gremlins. So you wanna think about what you said. Grogu is a smaller version of yoda.

  12. Zak

My goodness, slow news week? This article is nothing. Its literally like eight paragraphs of meaningless preamble with a single quote at the bottom with regards to what you actually wanted. Man this site is trash and the author of this article seriously needs to reconsider their life choices if this is the type of schlock that the sites got them writing.

  13. Damon Ferguson

The full grown green gremlins kinda look like Yoda. But you didn’t hear George Lucas hate on that.

  14. Wyldstaar

Grogu is a take on the character of Daigoro from Japan’s Lone Wolf and Cub saga. The Mandalorian takes a huge amount of influence from that series.

    1. Kevin

A lot of us already noticed, but doesn’t detract from the fact that this is still storytelling we love, albeit maybe a bit formulaic.

While I do think Grogu was designed to duplicate the cuteness factor of (and AS) a Stitch/Pikachu hybrid, Dante’s claim is still bogus.

  15. David

Nice try Joe. If Grogu was out and out stolen, one would think you’d have brought it up during season 1.

  16. Jello

Can’t believe I clicked on this story. Now that I did I will probably be flooded with other similar non-stories. At least there are comments!

  17. David

Funny thing about it is that people in the theaters were saying Gizmo was a younger version of Yoda.

  18. CS

Clearly Gizmo was made as a copy of Yoda. Grogu is a baby version of Yoda.

  19. Dave

Considering how many of the original Gremlins creature crew were also part of the Star Wars FX department, this claim is absurd. Joe Dante should know this. If anything, the design for Gizmo was directly inspired by Yoda. Jon Berg who worked on both sets knows this. This is a shameless publicity stunt by Joe Dante.

  20. Todd

Mr Dante is a nobody right now and is making an outlandish statement in an attept to get relavent again if even for a moment. If he really thinks Grogu is ripping off Gizo it is because he knows he ripped off Yoda first.

  21. Todd

    Frank does….

  22. Jimmie Stealth

Gremlins was a rip off of ET. ET was originally going to have the five aliens and ET was going to be the “GIZMO” good guy but SFX was too new and expensive for all that do they just had one alien. Gremlins is the original ET plot line, used years later when SFX became more readily available and more affordable. Learn your history folks and you’ll never get fooled again!

  23. To the others commenting on this: a lot of you are taking this way too seriously. Joe Dante’s quote was meant as a joke. The article from the San Francisco Chronicle makes that clear. It says specifically that he is not thinking of suing Disney and that he bears them no ill will. This whole “controversy” is a huge nothingburger.
