Couple things. First, Luke battles Vader on Cloud City. Bespin is the name of the gaseous planet. Not the name of the city, which floats in the planet’s atmosphere.
Second, Luke told Leia of their familial connection (and by extension, their parentage) before The Battle of Endor, not after.
In response to Vic. The location of the fight is stated correctly. Luke fights Vader on Bespin. They are on the planet of Bespin. They are in Cloud City. You wouldn’t say they are fighting on Cloud City, that would be incorrect. I am on Earth, I am not on Tennessee, I am in Tennessee. So yes, Luke and Vader fought on Bespin.
Second, the moment Leia finds out about Vader is in the movie. It’s a whole 4 minute scene that has been cannon since 1983. Luke tells Leia who his father is, tells her the force is strong in his family, that his sister has the force, and that she is his sister. Then they talk about how Luke has to go face him and then she has a very emotional moment as he leaves. Not only because he’s leaving but also because of who her father is.
Tyler, I did’t say it was not in the movie. It clearly is. But Luke and Leia spoke BEFORE the battle of Endor (not after, as is claimed in the article). Re-watch the movie.
And I stand by my Cloud City comment. Your comparison is flawed.
“And I stand by my Cloud City comment. Your comparison is flawed.”
Tyler’s comparison is correct. Bespin is the planet they were on. If you had written the article and wanted to say “on Cloud City” or “in Cloud City” or “above Bespin” or whatever, fine, but “on Bespin” is still correct.
Aw, I’m sorry, Rob, but your response is incorrect. Thank you for being a contestant on “Defending Tyler’s Idiotic Comment.” We have some lovely parting gifts for you.
Actually you and Tyler are both correct. Bespin is the name of the gas giant/planet that Cloud City is on. However, Cloud City isn’t just merely a city, but also a structure. Luke and Vader are onboard the the structure when they fight. So it is correct to say that they fought either on Bespin (the planet) or on Cloud City (the structure).
I actually watched ROTJ last night Vic and you are correct. Luke an Leia spoke after the Ewoks had a banquet accepting them into their tribe on the EVE of the battle. Luke was explaining to Leia why he had to go face Vader and in that explanation he told her.
The direct quote is:
“Luke: If I don’t make it back, you’re the only hope for the Alliance.
Princess Leia: Luke, don’t talk that way. You have a power I don’t understand and could never have.
Luke: You’re wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you’ll learn to use it as I have. The Force runs strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. And… my sister has it. Yes. It’s you, Leia.
Princess Leia: I know. Somehow, I’ve always known.”
Tyler you are correct with Bespin and I love how you pointed out the difference between in and on. Fn Great! I think Vic’s point is that the Battle of Endor does not include Luke and Leia etc on the bikes as part of “The Battle” I assume his idealogy is when Like have up his saber and Han did the setup to get the troopers outand surrounded them. I guess a Battle only happens in space.
Um, Bespin was the gas planet Cloud city was over so how can they be ON a gas giant? You can’t be on one of our gas giants but you can be over it so they were not ON Bespin but Cloud City which was OVER it
Not only ROTJ but in books (I know it’s not canon anymore) Leia goes to the planet of the Nogri and they recognize her of being of Vader’s blood simply by scent. She knew before then that she was Vader’s daughter.
The issue I have with this article is that the author got it so wrong. Like… does this publication have anyone who actually knows what they’re talking about when it comes to Star Wars?
Anyone who has seen ROTH understands that Luke effectively tells Leia IN THE MOVIE that he is Vader’s son, and she is his sister. Ergo, she is ALSO Vader’s child.
The article says “She does, however, ultimately discover who her biological father is — she was adopted by Bail Organa (Jimmy Smits) — after the Rebels win the Battle of Endor.”
Read that carefully and note the punctuation. It does not say she was adopted after the battle of Endor. It says she found out who her father is after the battle of Endor.
As others have said, Leia finding out she’s Vader’s daughter is seen in RotJ. The writer of this article is conflating Leia finding out with Leia coming to terms with the information.
I think the more newsworthy part of the novel is that it canonizes that Leia’s was referring to Padmé when Luke asks if she remembers her mother. George Lucas muddied that water with RotS showing Padmé dying after childbirth, so why would Leia have answered about Padmé instead of Breha, who was the only mother Leia ever knew?
According to the Kenobi series, Leia knew she was adopted by age 10, but it’s still an odd reply unless they had previous off-screen conversations about being adopted and she knew which mother Luke was asking about.
Leia remembered Padme from the very brief time she saw her on Polis Massa right after she is born but she knew her mother’s feelings because of her connection to the force. Luke didn’t remember because he’s Luke and a male so he wouldn’t know those emotions. But Leia was always the emotional one, thanks to her mom. Luke got his personality from Anakin.
This is worse than the Han vs Gredo argument. I am in the Han camp , he shot first in the original movie. Lucas add stuff later. I was 6 when I seen it.
I saw a video somewhere where they redid the death scene of Vader. Prowse wasn’t in that scene so they redid it with him as Vader so he could have the experience.
I like to see Leia forgiving her birth father and knowing the truth about his kindness when he was a kid discovering he not all bad and vowing to fulfill his wish to free the slaves

Exactly! There is no need for a book to explain her relationship to Vader because “Jedi” did that already.
Joe
Bespin is not the planets name. It’s a tibanna gas giant called Taloraan and Bespin is the formal name for cloud city.
Jruggf
Bespin IS the name of the planet. Cloud City is the name of Cloud City.
Muzio
All that novel “canon” will get deleted as soon as another trio of movies is made, just as happened with the ” Hand of Thrawn” books.

Wow…..Thanks Vic. Now I can relax.

Meant ROTJ. Stupid fat thumbs

People who care about Star Wars don’t care about Disney “Star Wars”. Nothing Disney does is canon.

I’ve seen my ROTH for this quarter. Down 16%. I’m not pleased.
But you are right, Luke tells her that Vader is her father too.

Biggest gaffe, Hamill was nowhere near 25 when ANH filmed! I believe Harrison Ford was though.
Hiro Protagonist
Hamill was born in 1951 and ANH released in 77, presumably filmed in 76. So if we do that math…
Ford, on the other hand, was 34 and Fisher was 20.

The most important thing to say is thank you for crediting Prowse along with Jones for portraying Vader. He is way too often disregarded.
