My family just returned from a trip to Disney World. We had a fantastic time. We purchased the Genie + and it worked wonderfully! It’s a great system, you just have to take the time to learn it.

Please read WHY Walt DISNEY created DisneyLand World – he wanted a Park where average citizens could afford to go to compared to the THEN high prices of the Traveling or static parks he couldn’t go to as a child, he was delivering papers twice a day and his father was the Owner, Editor as well! So sad that vision disappeared back with Michael Eisner era . Replaced with Corporate greed and ROI for Executive bonuses!!

To be clear, regular queue times will always be much longer when operating paid express lanes. Also, douche bags will always be douche bags hence the need for these people to pay extra money to get ahead.

Disney shouldn’t have any form of express lane, if you’re unable to wait too bad, go someplace else.

    1. SCOTT m Lee-ROSS

queue times will not be longer.
The ride has a maximum capacity per hour. It is impossible to increase that number. That means that if the crowd that wanted to use the Lightning Lane showed up in that hour, the same number of people would be able to ride, so the time to wait would be the same. The demand does not change, the supply does not change, so the wait remains the same.

Maybe Scott before you try to give others an economic lessons you should do some research on moderating variables. On a recent trip to Disney I waited online for the first time for an hour and forty minutes for the mine train. When I got on the ride two things were evident that Disney was modifying the experience. One they were not filling all the seats and two the ride was slower than before.

I decided to speak to a cast member who pulled me away from the podium to explain. He said they were told slow the pace of the ride. He also added this causes the standby line to be longer since priority is given to genie + and LL.

What affect do you think moderating variable has on supply and demand? Well it increases demand for LL.

What affect do you think on the ride if Disney did not stop the standby line as they did with every single time some shows up in the LL of the efficiency of the said line? It would move quicker this balancing out as when they had FP where the attendant would occasionally hold the FP line to let stand by patrons go through.

Capacity is being moderated or manipulated by Disney to increase LL usage.

        1. Robert

Disney is sinister and ugly these days.

        2. Hipper

          Bruh…
You can’t “slow the pace” on a roller coaster.

Unless it has multiple brake sections to slow it down, once a coaster train leaves the lift chain, it goes.

      2. Julian H

What are you talking about, if someone has Lightning lane and more people come to that queue then the poor sods in standby will have to wait longer. The staff push through lightning lane over the the standby.

        The whole situation sucks.

      3. Ken

What math class did you go to? Try this math problem. If you have 200 people waiting in the standby line and the ride’s capacity is 25 per hour and you have 200 pepole show up with their paid to get ahead passes how long will those in the standby line have to wait? In other words the system cheats people who can’t afford the cheat passes. Makes it real difficult to tell little Suzy and little Johnny that their Mommy and Daddy don’t have enough money to buy cheat passes which is unfair to children. Just like when the trashy Kardashians took over the Teacup ride at Disneyland. Everybody was forced to stand there and watch. The ride wasn’t even filled fully. Resentment is growing against these people who flaunt there money in other people’s faces. I spent ten years in the Army and 21 years as a nurse and it sickens me to watch people abuse the rights of others as protected by the Constitution.

I am very anti the new pay system. The Fastpass system worked really well. It treated everyone equally and gave everyone the opportunity to by pass the longer lines regardless of the size of your group and your income. When you have scrimped and saved to take your family to Disney, it is immoral to then be asked to pay out yet more money to enjoy the rides you have already paid for!

    1. SCOTT m Lee-ROSS

why is is immoral. Is it immoral if you save for a car and can buy a Kia for someone else to buy a Jaguar or a Porsche? No. It is capitalism. but it is neither moral or immoral.
The same is true at Walt Disney World.
If you went in 1971 you had to choose which E tickets you were going to ride, based on the number of tickets you had. Some could afford more tickets, some could not.
It you went to Walt Disney World, some had to stay at Fort Wilderness because that was all they could afford while others stayed in the luxury of the Grand Floridian. Neither of these are moral choices or ammoral. They again are Capitalism

      1. Robert

Screwing families that paid a lot to go in the first place, just to have reasonable access – or wait in purposely slowed lines is really sh1tty. Only Disney apologists and apathetic sociopaths find these practices acceptable.

      2. Phil

I agree, I call it ‘sickening’ and ‘greedy’. Let’s get in as many people that we can, make them stand in outrageous lines (if you’re wasting your trip standing in lines-hour wait means about 7 rides depending on how fast you walk from ride to ride). And you pay how much to stand in Florida’s heat and humidity?

    2. Zara

Disney are a business, all theme parks are doing it…why wouldn’t they lol

  4. Phoebe L Ho

My last trip to D-land was a week from last Friday. A summer Friday. And I was able to do everything I wanted without Lightning Lane. I find it an unnecessary expense. And anyone who mocks me for not using it is going to get an earful.

    1. Travis

Would’ve benefitted off of genie+ if all the available times were actually available. Everything I tried to use it, the option wasn’t available. The whole trip became more of a hassle because of it and I felt I wasted money on genie + because lightning lane times were never available.

  5. Todd

I went to Disneyland last week and was able to do all major rides at both California Adventure and Disneyland using Genie+…and I didn’t pay for one Lightning Lane. (NOTE: Rise of the Resistance was down most of the day so I didn’t get to ride that one ride)

It’s very possible to enjoy all rides with little to no wait if you use Genie+ wisely. Also, it was my first experience using the service, so it’s not brain surgery to utilize it to it’s top potential.

    1. Todd

I should clarify that I did BOTH PARKS on the same day and rode all rides. I even had time to watch the Lion King show, fireworks and Main Street Electrical Parade.

I was skeptical of Genie+, but it worked very well for me!

      1. You did this comment twice, just saying lol

        1. Phil Phphophil

They did a comment for each park.

  6. If everyone pays to use this system then surely there will be no time benefit? If you paid extra for all the top rides on a 14 day holiday it would be very expensive. The old system was fairer IMHO. We have decided to give it a miss after this years visit due to these changes. They have outpriced it for us.

  7. Gloria Cassales

Genie plus provided me the privilege of getting to be in what is essentially a lottery for prime hard to come by lightening lanes that sell out in minutes of everyone signing into the app at 0700. And, if you are not on the App at exactly 0700 the morning of park day in order to get your chance at a good lightening lane pass, they will sell out until at least mid day or even later in the evening AND you even now have to stay on Disney property in order to get the privilege of being able to have access to the app 2 hours before anyone else gets access to the app. And, it’s critical to be able to have that additional 2 hours in order to get the best shot at even getting a good Lightening pass in the Genie Plus lottery. Anyone who stays off property has to wait until they get to the park to use Genie Plus, and all the good passes are usually gone until VERY LATE in the day. This new system in my opinion, allows Disney to OVERSELL the park all the time. And, so I got to stare at my Genie Plus phone app all freakin day in hopes of trying to fill the day and strategize on how to be able to get the most rides so that I didn’t feel swindled. IT WAS HELL AND IT WAS BARELY ENJOYABLE, AS I WAS THE ONE WHO WAS ASSIGNED AS THE GENIE PLUS IT ENGINEER FOR THE DAY. Disney. You. suck. And I’m done with your parks.

    1. SCOTT m Lee-ROSS

Maybe come back after you understand how Genie+ works.
      – Everyone can make a Genie+ reservation at 7am. Then you can make another when you use your first or two hours later, starting at park opening time.
      – Not only does it have nothing to do with park capacity, It does not allow Disney to oversell the park all the time. In fact, they have reduced the capacity and never intend to return to previous capacities.

      1. Julian H

I do not like the new pay system, Disney have clearly over subscribed it, at least with the old and fairer Fast Pass, you had a time it seemed a fairer spread of people so at the very least people in Standby got a fair chance to ride in a reasonable time.

These days Greedy Disney just want to take your money twice for the same ride, and its not fairly spread out like it used to be because they can make more money. They clearly do not want to see the bigger picture as people are starting to have enough.

  8. Eric

Paying to skip the lines is wrong, people who wait patiently in line only for someone to jump in line last second and fly to the front is upsetting. Even at smaller parks like six flags this is a problem. The old system that made it equal for everyone and was free was best. Everyone had a chance to get a fast pass, you didn’t have to fight for them or pay extra for them. Everyone already pays way too much for a Disney trip without Genie+

    1. Connex

I use to love Disney. But it has become to expensive for big family. Having to choose between a souvenirs, even a balloon at 20 to 30 bucks. For a family of 6. Let alone trying to purchase a genie pass. You do the math…. Having to tell your kids maybe next time. Just so we can afford water a dinner, popcorn . Not everyone is rich. Some families like mine have to save. And still feel like you didn’t get the full smile, from your kids.

      1. Stacey Kelly

I still love Disney and the feeling it gives me BUT I totally agree with how much this is a horrible change. Way too expensive for families and just being single. It’s too stressful to have to deal with on top of just making the reservation system just to get into the parks. ARRGH!!!! I don’t mind waiting in line and you get to see the awesome designs/displays that are in the line that you wouldn’t typically see when you went through with a Fast Pass. I know they have to raise prices for tickets, makes sense but why do all of this. And to know you also traveled to Disney from far away to possible miss out on a new ride because you couldn’t get into a queue or afford this ridiculous “lightning Lane” that is jaw dropping and heartbreaking and I live only an hour from the park. I think of all of the families that have to worry and or stress about that additional $$. HORRIBLE!!! Heck, Universal has a descent system that you pay for an “Express Pass” at the entrance for ONE price. I don’t use it but at least you know what your paying and you know your getting on the ride faster. But all/most of these new systems at Disney really truly suck. Stressful, expensive, and ridiculous. So many other words I could use. Come on Disney?? I hope they are rethinking some of these new changes.

    2. Travis Weberling

@Eric, Exactly right, & at some point WDW is going to get too greedy & raise their ticket prices too high for most people to go. I’ve heard that a ticket just getting into WDW or Epcot is already at $150,that’s insane & already too expensive, I couldn’t imagine people wanting to go to any Disney park whenever it goes up to $200/ person just to get into the dam park.

  9. Brian

We did Disneyland + CAL early this month. We did Genie+ for both parks. And we used LL for the CARS ride.

I didn’t like paying for it, but at the end of each day, I felt like it was worth it for GENIE+. I have 2 Little ones, and it would be difficult for them. I’m not sure about the LL, but at least my youngest got to ride it. if we had to wait in each line we would have gotten on way less rides. It gave us ample time to get decent spots for electric parade+fireworks and World of Color

  10. Melissa

It wasn’t until the introduction of Genie+ and ILL that I learned how many people never bothered to learn how to spell “lightning.”

    1. John

Everyone thanks you for being alive.

    2. Stuart Piedmann

The lightening lane is where people go for cosmetic skin procedures.

  11. Chris Wood

If you plan well and go on the attractions that you really want to, then your trip can be fun and enjoyable.
Plan your trip off season, visit the parks when the rush is over, or less crowded. If you can do it, plan your trip when school is still in service.

  12. J West

what a moron . entitled brat who also does not realize LL sells out. there are a lot of people in that line that would have purchase a LL

    1. Chris

He sounds like a paid shill for Di$ney.

  13. Michael Easter

When passing people in the lightening lane keep your mouth shut. They might want skin treatments too.

  14. Peggy

This conversation just points out the class difference Disney is pushing. It’s no longer a place to go and just enjoy the parks. It’s all about the money. I was in line for cart at Hollywood studio with a lot of others to buy a drink and ice creams . Our wait was 15 minutes. When my turn came I walked up to the cart and a guy walked right up next to me cutting the line and just started a ordering with a commanding voice. The girl working the cart looked at me. I said no he’s not with me. He looked at me and I pointed to the line we waited in of course he stated he didn’t see the line. Really. We are right in front of your face. He apologized and took his order and left. But the attitude was not true.

  15. The last time I went was before any of the Genie or any pay to cut the line. There was fast passes. I would go to the ride we wanted to ride and see what the wait time was, sometimes it was shorter then the posted time. If you couldn’t get on that ride then go to ani one. I will not pay to go on a ride I have already paid to get into the park. I have been about 20 times and after reading all the mean things that are going on the last time might have been the last time. I just want to MAGIC THAT WAS WALT DISNEY WORLD.

  16. Noel

My family went to Disney World two months ago, when you could purchase Genie+ at the time you bought your tickets. For the most part, we used the standby lanes because the wait times weren’t too long. For the longer wait times that exceeded an hour to two hours we used our Genie+ passes. We did this because we have two small children and waiting for long lengths of time can be very tiresome and difficult for them. This is good for families who have small children that are incapable of spending an entire day at Disney. It helped make the day more enjoyable for our children and shaved a good three hours of wait time off each day so we were able to make the most of our time. For those of you shaming others for buying Genie+ passes and accusing us of “always wanting to get ahead,” do you have small children? If you can’t justify spending the money for Genie+ passes for yourself nor your family that’s fine, but don’t judge others that do.

  17. Bob

Typical rich self absorbed conservative douche

    1. Steve

That my friend you are talking about and he is as liberal as they come. Hate to be the one to break that news for you.

  18. Blimp

So many are defending Genie+ or ILL based on what it allows you to do – skip lines – rather than what it has replaced. Of course the ability to skip lines is amazing, and I cannot blame anyone willing (and able) to pay for the privilege. The issue is that it is replacing exactly the same privilege that was previously free to everyone and with less hassle. This makes my Disney holiday objectively worse whether I pay for it or not. Assuming I go without either, my holiday still costs much more than when I last went (due to price increases) and I will have to wait in longer lines/go on less because I can no longer use fastpass. If I do choose (assuming unlimited money) to pay for it my holiday cost increases dramatically beyond the already increased ticket price and I now have to be up at 7am every day of my holiday to try to buy ILL and book genie+ slots. This means much more planning in addition to the early mornings (previously my party would often decide on the day which park to go to, but they shouldn’t have to all be up at 7am too) and a lot more time on my phone. I also have to consider who I can go to Disney with because even if I can afford to chuck money at ILL on a whim, retired parents or less well off friends and family may not. Either way, I (and everyone else – whether they buy everything or nothing) am paying more for a less enjoyable holiday than I would have had before, when this ‘new service’ was free and easier.

    1. Eugenia Fleisher

Free FP were not actually “free” since you had to stay in an expensive Disney resort to have early access for the most popular rides. 60 days in advance for resort guests and 30 days in advance for everybody else. I prefer the ability to purchase Genie+ and LL and stay in a Vbro or AirBnb house with lots of bedrooms, a full kitchen and laundry facilities. Our last trip in October, 2021 was actually LESS expensive than previous trips because we stayed in a much cheaper property with more space and used Genie+ and LL.

      1. Blimp

Not in my experience, we have never stayed on Disney property (we are always a group of 5 adults+ coming for 2 weeks so have always prefered to rent out a self-catered villa) and never struggled to get a fastpass we wanted – often with less than a days notice.

  19. Barbara Price

The first time we went to Disney World we didn’t purchase the fast pass (it was called that when we went back in the stone age). Lines were beyond long and by the time you waited for 4 rides the park was ready to close. This time we got this Genie or whatever it’s called and we were able to see the whole park before it closed and ride all the rides we wanted to. Thanks Disney for making our park visit very enjoyable.

    1. Blimp

You wouldn’t have needed to buy it before, fastpass (at least in my living memory) has always been free to everyone at Disney and came as part of your ticket automatically.

  20. Jayne1955

I’m sick of paying for things that were recently free. And I don’t want to spend all day on my vacation on my phone. I will not be going back any time soon, and I’m a stockholder and frequent visitor.

  21. billnyenotascienceguy

I always laugh to my myself when I hear people say they aren’t going to return to Disney or buy any of their products. Yet the lines are still long and the prices are outrageous and y’all keep showing up. Carry on sheep.

  22. Robbo

In the fast pass+ days we actually got abuse when using fast pass along the lines of “aw look rich people too good to queue”. At the time I just considered them idiots as it was available to everyone. However Disney now have genuinely implemented a class system in the parks with separate queues for rich and poor people. It’s quite sad really.

  23. Kevin

It’s the fact that no one should have to pay 11 dollars to ride a ride on top of how much tickets cost. I refuse to pay extra and will wait in line, these corporations keep getting greedier and greedier and the more we fall for it the worse it will get.

  24. Robert

Screwing families that paid a lot to go in the first place, just to have reasonable access – or wait in purposely slowed lines is really sh1tty. Only Disney apologists and apathetic sociopaths find these practices acceptable.

  25. Don

Genie is another name for white privilege!!!!

    1. Rox

That is racist, insulting and patronizing to imply that only white people can afford the extra charge.

  26. Gams

Sorry, but Disney made it clear, that since the guest is paying for Genie+ or ILL, they will be put on first. In the past it was a mix of fast lane then standby. Not anymore.

  27. David

Is it worth it? Probably not. If there are only 1 or 2 people in your group: maybe. Otherwise, it doesn’t help that much. What it does is penalize longtime visitors who plan ahead. The app also does NOT work well, force closes daily, and deliberately confuses the genie+lightning lane with the extra lightning lane “a la carte”.

  28. Peter.

I would prefer a 1 off payment for faster access along the lines of universal, I think it is sad that Disney has gone this way. But even sadder that people who have the luxury to pay for lightening lanes instead of waiting in line feels the need to shout about it. You mentioned “not wanting to be a jerk about it” TOO LATE FELLA
