I concur! I’m disgusted that Disney is “re-imagining” Splash Mountain because of leftist pressure! I grew up with Uncle Remus (I had all the books as a kid) & am a big fan of “Song of the South” still today. How anyone could find that movie “racist” while permitting some of the TV shows that stereotype Blacks is beyond me!!!
Leftist would live in USSR circa 1937 if they could when so many of them thought they’f found utopia. 80 million dead later how is that working out for ya? by the way I’m a Libertarian leaning Independent.
Disney said that before he bought all that land in Florida. He specifically said there was enough land in Florida to hold all the ideas the Imagineers could come up with. Splash Mountain was and is an attraction based on the movie that depicts a man telling stories to children. Now we celebrate Drag Queens doing that but not a black man. Sorry, something seems off.
and let’s remember besides being the most sympathetic character in the movie he was NOT a slave, he was a sharecropper, since the movie takes place after the war.
If the ride is so offensive to so many people how is that the wait time for Splash Mountain at any given season is never really below 45 minutes and up to and over an hour. It does not make sense.
“Song of the South” should be released with a disclaimer and let people decide for themselves if it is controversial. TCM shows “Gone With The Wind” and no one says boo. If you want to theme “Princess and the Frog”, turn Boatwrights restaurant at Riverside to “Tiana’s Place”. Perfect setting for her.
Let’s see, in the post Civil War south a free black man tells old black Folk lore stories to children. The stories are about how it’s better to face your problems than try to run away from them. How exactly is that racist? Disney is actually erasing black history by changing the ride. Stop listening to ignorant people.
Those that simply ride the ride and never read the book or saw the movie will always follow the whining crowds to change everything in the world but what they aren’t realizing is the parts they are removing are the parts that will be repeated in the future as the past mistakes won’t be around to be taught and stopped. Take away statues instead of telling the story and reason for it being placed where it is! Regan stated, ” The mistakes of the past are only one generation away from being repeated in the future!”
LEAVE THIS RIDE ALONE, THERE IS NOT A MORE DISNEY SONG THAN “ZIP A DEE DO DA” PEOPLE NEED TO JUST GET OVER THEMSELVES. MAKE TIANA A NEW RIDE, BUT LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE. ALREADY CHANGED TOO MUCH
Disney once again being politically correct… (who’s surprised here???). I’m glad we will get to ride our favorite ride at least one more time before it is “re-imagined”. Other then that no comment.
Given the film hasn’t been released in theaters since the early 80s and never on home video, DVD, Bluray or streaming… they’ve been “politically correct” for close to 40 years. Grow up. Get over it.
Um, I’m assuming that you are talking about the MOVIE that is telling apart of our history. Well, I’m sorry to inform you that your information is WRONG, Song ofthe South has been released on home video as well as DVD, only thng is, that it was released in Europe.
Me too! Like David pointed out, it HAS been released for home video & DVD in Europe. I managed to get my DVD copy several years ago on sale at the South Carolina State Fair of all places & have ripped copies to all of my computers!
It’s not magical anymore… but that’s not cause they changed a ride. Its the reservations hyper planning BS that took the magic away… oh and the ridiculous costs.
I am sure it will be a wonderful ride as I still believe that Disney animators are a talented group. However, I totally disagree with the closure of Splash Mountain. There is nothing racist about Splash mountain itself. Most younger Americans aren’t even familiar with the movie it was loosely based on. They only know what the media has forced on them.It is a beautiful happy delightful ride with an award winning song that make most people happy!! Our woke society tries to make something of everything these days. I am letting my AP go after almost 15 years. (BTW, my first WDW visit was in 1973) Disney doesn’t cater to the average person any longer in my opinion, only special interest groups. As many people have expressed over the lat few years , Walt would be disappointed.
What age group do you think was driving the petition? If you don’t think that this was driven from the 18-24 year old demographic then you really haven’t been paying attention.
And as for you visited in 1973 and giving up your AP… NO ONE CARES. It isn’t relevant.
As much as I enjoy the current ride with the Song of the South theme, I can understand and appreciate the updating. There’s at least a whole generation (maybe 2 now) that have no idea what Song of the South is and the animatronics are looking very dated. I like the idea of Princess and the Frog. I think the attraction could “easily” be converted to a bayou like theme. Having said that, I do completely understand the nostalgia older people (I’m 53, so I include myself) may feel about the current theme and ride. I will withhold judgement until I see the completed new attraction.
Honestly, the mistake they made here was saying it was due to racism and BLM etc. That made it instantly political. And it was done to score points and I get that.
But had they stuck too… Hey, this is a film that hasn’t been released in almost 40 years, we want to replace it with theming from a more contemporary movie that current generations have watched… There would be less pushback.
I agree. I have a 12 and 6 year old. Although we own Song of the South on DVD, they have never cared to watch it. That doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy Splash Mountain and the story of the ride. They sing Zipadee Doo Dah regularly at home and are really sad about the Princess and the Frog retheme. Although they have seen the Princess and the Frog movie, they would rather another ride be built than lose one they enjoy so much. They also don’t enjoy the music of The Princess and the Frog as much as the music in Splash Mountain. I don’t think Disney should care so much about whether current generations have seen the movie the ride is based on as much as they should care whether people are riding and enjoying the ride. The retheme was unnecessary because current generations still ride and enjoy Splash Mountain as is. I also could care less about a petition and I don’t think Disney cares either. IF they did, Johnny Depp would be playing Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
I’m excited for this retheme. I think the ride is perfect for a bayou makeover. I hope they throw in some spooky Shadow Man features on the darker areas of the ride!
What a wonderful addition to the park and the whole area over there. I am looking forward to the wonderful music (by Randy Newman) from The Princess and The Frog on the ride.
As a New Orleanian, I’m just trying to figure out how exactly they tie in the drop since there ain”t one single hill in a 100 mile radius that’s higher than a speed bump!! But whatever! Who needs to be historically correct if it might trigger the weak minded.
The ride needs a refresh for sure, even if just to fix the mechanicals. I get wanting to add more princesses/recent movie IP into rides. Also I am disappointed they are moving away from Brer Rabbit stories. I also get the issues with Song of the south. It could have been interesting to find a way to share the fact that the Brer rabbit stories which are based on African folk tales – vs Princess and the Frog which is based on a German fairy tale. There was a 2006 Brer Rabbit animated film with prominent actors too.
This!!!! I see it as taking away one of the only African American themed rides they have! The ride is a showcase of the authentic black folk tales that they passed along to one another. It does not display any of the movie itself, other than the songs created for the feature. I think it a shame that Splash Mountain can’t remain and they turn Tom Sawyers Island into a New Orleans square, complete with a ride, restaurant and shop dedicated to Tiana. After all, her dream was to have her own restaurant! The Liberty Bell could be incorporated by having a jazz band play while transporting guests to New Orleans square
I have said this multiple times with Tom Sawyer island. Besides, how does a New Orlelans themed ride fit into the theming for Frontierland? I think it would be better added on Tom Sawyer island and incorporated into Liberty Square.
I love this idea! Tom Sawyer Island is in desperate need of an update. I find it interesting that folks find Splash Mountain problematic but not Tom Sawyer island with its Calvary Fort and all the Indians depicted as “savages”. Sigh ….
I’m actually pretty excited for it. I love when Disney changes and adapts to the changing times. I’m 35 and have been going to Disney yearly since I was 2 and remember a lot of attractions that are extinct now. The original Figment…Horizons….1000 Leagues Under the Sea…Honey I Shrunk The Audience/Moonwalker Show…The Old Dinosaur Ride (with Bill Nye and Ellen)….Mr. Toads Wild Ride…Alien Encounter…and many MANY more. Yea I was sad to see them go and was hesitant to like the new attractions…but I also know that my kids wouldn’t enjoy those attractions NOW like I did THEN. I don’t think the racist undertone was the only nor MAIN reason Splash mountain is closing….but let’s be honest….the foundation to Splash Mountain is pretty good to do a Princess and The Frog Theme. It would be nice if they could do a separate attraction AND keep Splash Mountain….but that’s not how the cards fell this time. So I’ll hesitantly embrace this new change, but I would lie if I said I wasn’t anxious yet excited for it!
Smiley, you are the only one in the comments with an open mind!
Everything gets a change in Disney, hell, I wouldn’t want to see the same themed look Mickey Mouse I saw as a kid (he would be scary now and scare my kid)….
Leave Splash Mountain as it is and people that enjoy the ride, ride it if you don’t, don’t ride it, it is tucked in the back of the park so you don’t need to go near it. There is enough real estate at Disney to add The Princess and the Frog as a new attraction. Problem solved!
If it has to change, the new version of Splash Mountain had better be “wow’, not just “woke”. What about that racist Radiator Springs Racers attraction?
not thrilled about the change : don’t feel it’s necessary, a minority of people suddenly taking offense to something that’s been in existence for years
surely they didn’t have to returned the ride !!
It doesn’t need to be changed. There is nothing wrong with the theming of Splash Mountain nor is there anything wrong with Song Of The South. Enough with the woke culture nonsense
Splash Mt shouldn’t change. Zippity Do Dah song is such a great song and most of us sing it as we are on the ride. We do not associate it with Racism. Even the relatives of James Baskett who sang Song of South do not agree with the cancellation of the music . You can not cancel out everything from the past just because it offends some people. I get tired of people using Walt Disneys statement that Disneyland will never be completed as a confirmation that it will always change. The addition of new attractions was the obvious intent not changing all that Walt originally imagined. Walt had no idea that the area around the Park would basically close it off to major additions. That is why he started WDW with all the Land that was available for expansion. Just wish the Disney family would of kept control and passed it down through generations to ensure Walt’s Dream was preserved.
I am VERY UNHAPPY with it. Splash Mountain is my very favorite attraction. Disney needs to leave it alone as is. Walt was all about telling stories and that what Song of the South is all about. The Princess and the Frog animated feature was a complete flop and one the worst Disney has ever done. If they have to add that attraction to the park then build it as an additional attraction. Don’t mess with history.
Why do the morons at the top always cower to the few . When so many already love the ride or rides they way they are. I own the movie song of the south and it is a wonderful cute caring movie. A few people complained about pirates chasing women in Pirates of the Caribbean. So they put food in the hands of the women. And they complained like I said just a few . About pirates auctioning off the women now they auction off eggs and stuff. Do you think pirates really went to auctions? What they wanted they took. So my point is leave splash mountain the way it is
Hum, I must have missed the “racist” character on the Splash Mountain ride! Can someone point me to where that is so I can see the racism they seem so worried about?
Back when SOS was made black actors were not being featured in major roles. SOS was Disney’s way of showcasing their talents by telling traditional African derrived stories (don’t believe it – see Uncle Remus museum near Atlanta). Even the animators, and voice actors from SOS are good with Splash. But now they are replacing it based on an unpopular and unsuccessful movie written by a white woman. This is nothing more than pandering and political correctness. Until people stop shoveling money into Disney’s cofers this crappy company will never change and continue to indoctrinate your children. Former Disney cast member, collector and current stock holder. Stock has fallen to 109 from a high of 182 this last year. I hope it goes lower. The company needs a house cleaning from top to bottm ala 1980ish. I will never spend a nickel on anything from Disney nor visit their parks untill this crap ends.
I am totally against this. To be practical, Tom Sawyer’s island would have made a better Bayou. And most of the people complaining about Song Of The South have not seen it.
Princess and the Frog needs it’s own ride. And the state of Splash Mountain currently with the 20 or so broken down, animatronics, water features in disrepair, I welcome a re-theme. Looking forward to the re-theme and to hear the great songs of that movie.
I have no problem with Disney making changes to its theme parks. Walt Disney always said the parks would never be finished. My problem is that lately Disney has been bending over backwards to accommodate the political and woke crowd. Changing everything because it shouldn’t be or someone got their feelings hurt. The original should not be changed because of personal feelings. Change things to update or make new, but don’t change history or great old classics. We are hurting ourselves when we let things like that happen.
Princess Tiana deserves her own ride and restaurant by retheming Tom Sawyer Island better than retheming Splash Mountain in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom
#SaveSplashMoutain
I know this article says zip a dee do da is not on home video, for those people like myself that own Disney sing along at Disneyland, the song is featured on it. I would go on this ride, it’s been 6 years since I’ve gone.
I will never set foot in that new ride. It is a bunch of blm bull, and disney caving in again. No back bone, jellyfish. There is nothing wrong with Splash Mountain. Someone was sitting around with nothing to do but start crap. I have been Disney {Walt} fan for over 60 years, but this is hogwash. Whats next, It’s a Small World. GEEZZZZZ!!!!
If you are too old to ride this ride, please stop talking. Things change. Constantly. If things didn’t change, nothing would get better. We would just be complacent with what we have always. Idk about you, but I look forward to things updating or new technologies, etc… in no way shape or for would I ever want my surroundings to just stay stagnant and the same. People get board with that.
The fact that you automatically assume that it’s only old people complaining pretty much invalidates your idiotic comment. Change is inevitable, yes but this is changing for all the wrong reasons.
And change does’t always work out. Just like the Stitch ride. Get it through your head. Sometimes they revert whether you like it or not. That’s why Nostalgia is more powerful, popular, and profitable.
Ridiculous. All this nonsense to please a small minority of people who are on a mission to cleanse us of everything THEY find offensive. Meanwhile, I’ve never seen anyone out in front of the ride, protesting it. It’s one of the more popular rides and nobody ever complained about the theme. Why are we trying to appease these extremist idiots?
I know that attractions at Disney can change but this is changing for all the WRONG reasons. It’s still immensely popular, so it makes no sense. I still love the Carousel of Progress but I know the majority of people are bored of it and it can disappear any day. It’s only been around this long because purists love it and it’s one that Walt himself designed and built, before the park even opened.

Disney gone woke. Walt is rolling in his grave.

Amen!!! Great point.

Rob
I’m still trying to figure out why Disney would build a ride based on “the most racist” movie of all time.

It said Disney has not confirmed, stupid. This seems to hint that someone only made that up. I sleep lies written here.
Jennifer
Hell no I’m not happy about it !!!!
Lauren
Let it alone! Love, love, love Song of the South!!!
Who, Me?
Splash mountain is not a racist attraction……
But it will be when this is done.

It never will be racist as it never was. It’s only racist by tongues of liars and misguided trolls who know nothing.

Princess Tiana deserves her own ride and restaurant by retheming Tom Sawyer Island better than retheming Splash Mountain in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom

Here comes all the thinly veiled Bigotry disguised under Disney being “Woke.”

When I time travel to the past and make hundreds of trillions of dollars, I will buy Disney and make it amazing.

I know this article says zip a dee do da is not on home video, for those people like myself that own Disney sing along at Disneyland, the song is featured on it. I would go on this ride, it’s been 6 years since I’ve gone.

The article was wrong and a liar. It has been on home video in Europe.

Sarah
If you are too old to ride this ride, please stop talking. Things change. Constantly. If things didn’t change, nothing would get better. We would just be complacent with what we have always. Idk about you, but I look forward to things updating or new technologies, etc… in no way shape or for would I ever want my surroundings to just stay stagnant and the same. People get board with that.
ROGER STEVENS
TOO OLD! Never! I still ride Space Mountain. I am not Dead.

Los

Can’t the Prime Minister of the United States do something about this? Just call a special parliament to prevent this from happening???
