…But it WAS a mistake!
Granted, it was the same mistake “Rogue One” made, and that every other studio was making when they thought they could make pointless “spinoff” stories in placeholder years between actual franchise sequels, but you can’t fault them for calling it like it is.
I mean, otherwise, that’d be like saying the last two Fantastic Beasts movies weren’t mistakes!
a handful of comments on social media making excuses doesn’t mean Solo was a good idea. Not enough people cared about the characters backstory for the film to be a success.
Rogue One and The Mandalorian proved that you can take new characters and successfully create interesting glimpses of new parts of the Star Wars galaxy. I found it disappointing (both in concept and result) when each used the crutch of core OT characters.
Solo wasn’t a bad movie, but it’s far from my favourite. Trying to recast a slightly younger Harrison Ford isn’t the same as Ewan McGregor playing a much younger Obi-Wan. And this was a story that didn’t need to be told. I was never interested in a sequel to Solo, though I did hope for a spinoff of some kind with more Maul and Emila Clarke.
