The answer to their question is it remains because, right or wrong, it is what was done and it is important to keep some of these things so that we can remember how bad things have happened, discuss and make sure they never happen again as well as being able to see how far we have come.
It is time to stop trying to erase the past and remember that if we don’t learn from it, we are doomed to repeat it. And we can’t learn from it if we try to erase it.
Exactly, if they are removed, in 2070, there will be someone who’ll make an attraction called “The Chief’s Powwow Ride” or some stuff. History is important, whether you like it or not.
I don’t see much in history about blacks who owned slaves where as abusive or more than whites ? We forget that blacks were the ones who started the slave trade ? All we here about the whites abusing blacks ? WHY ?
PC this and PC that. Really, have any of you actually read the original Peter Pan book, Capt. Hook and his band of pirates weren’t the homogenized Disney version, they were mean and the Indians were real too. Fine, “Getum firewood” may not be how real Indians spoke, but, when we played as kids, we spoke like that too. Did we think it was demeaning- no, we didn’t know any better. Sure, now it is a bit of a slam but where does racist come into it? I don’t follow your line of thinking at all!
Did any of your Native American friends point out that nobody they knew spoke like that, or suggest that they found it demeaning? How did you respond to them?
?? Native Americans don’t need to point out such things. They’ve got white saviors such as yourself speaking for them and deciding what they need to be offended by…
It’s the age of outrage, where so many people are looking to gain attention by finding a way to be offended by….well, anything.
Instead of trying to have a good time, there are people doing everything in their power to have a bad time and it’s like a bonus to ruin anyone else’s enjoyment. It must be exhausting to live life that way.
If anyone finds a ride or attraction offensive, just don’t go on it. PPF is one of the more popular attractions and always has above average wait times so there aren’t many people who actually find the ride content offensive.
I think that changing the Indian scene in Peter Pan will have the exact same effect as the changes made in Pirates Tom Sayers Island Jungle Cruise and the upcoming Splash Mountain. This is not Disneys problem. There will never be enough changes to appease those who continue to demand them.
Whole article is ignorant and ridiculous. Nothing wrong with Peter Pan ride. As far as PNG, this district is fantastic. They show the utmost respect to their school mascot and the Indian nation. Support PNG 100%!
These aren’t “Native Americans” in Neverland. I will never speak for an entire community ity of people, but being from Native heritage, I have never found this at all offensive. This was never intended to be racist wither. People simply didn’t know any better, ans nobody back then sat around pretending to get all offended by every little thing either. As for the school chant ans what not…I mean, that could be taken as offensive.
Is it just possible that Liberals could just shut up and stop ruining everything on earth ? As a Disney pass holder for many years, these idiots are actually the most offensive thing of all !
I’m curious, is the people mis-appropriating cultural ‘offense’ about American Indian issues the same thing that those same type of people complain about when they get upset about ‘cultural appropriation’? What gives them the right to appropriate another ethnic group’s point of view to then claim they speak on their behalf?
I’m not cool with some person of Western European heritage jumping in to claim they speak on behalf of me as an Armenian.
I’m not sure it’s appropriate for such persons grant themselves the self righteousness to speak on behalf of anyone else either.
As a Native American, I honestly don’t care if they keep or get rid of the scene. The ride at Disneyland has been reimagined to an extent (when they added the graphics), so it’s not the original ride as is. The movie was made in 1953, and the way people viewed Native Americans and how they were portrayed is different from now. We are still not treated as equals, but at least now our children are not being stolen and placed in Catholic Boarding Schools and assimilated into the “white world” to get rid of our culture.
That being said, I see no reason for the ride to be changed. What does need to happen is people need to be more educated on the Native people.
Here we go again. SJW’s (who have no direct ties to the “offensive” content) to the rescue! *eye roll*. Maybe the reason why the ride isn’t reimagined is because the scene is in the damn movie! Or should we shelve yet another classic Disney film because a few snowflakes are melting over it?
Enough with the PC crap. This has all gotten so ridiculous. Ever read the real Peter Pan? The real Pinocchio? The real Snow White? I would say Disney tamed these stories down quite enough.
Yes, the Native Americans were treated horribly (but some tribes also owned slaves…so…), as we’re the blacks, the Chinese….But so were the Irish and Italians who were also hung for simply being who they were. But that somehow slips through the cracks.
Look back into history. Something horrible happened to people of EVERY race, EVERY color and EVERY nationality. Keep it up, and everyone will just be home twiddling their fingers because everything everywhere has been shut down due to a few people taking offense.
I so agree with you. These days EVERYTHING offends some people or is that they just choose to stir things up. None of this stuff that is so called offensive today was brought up back when Disney started. Now a days we have to walk on eggshells so as not to offend those. Its totally ridiculous. Like you said eventually everywhere will be shut down and all history will be done away with. Sad for sure.
I have just about had it with the PC crap. Why is it a wonderful thing to have an Hispanic Snow White? Isn’t that cultural appropriation? The woke people are just looking for things to jump on. As a result
Disney jumps. For instance, I would bet that a majority of parents don’t want their kids to be exposed to a certain scene that will now be included in the new Toy Story. From my understanding, recently Native American activists have been after that school for a while. And I am not convinced that someone didn’t do a real fake and inserted “scalp em”. Of course we won’t know because the original video was taken down. I did watch the original, but the words were hard to make out. Hey jokesters, keep it up, you think you will get a park that you want, but in the end that will be a park most won’t want. And while we are at it, can someone explain how that new Moana attraction will be accessible to those who have to use an ECV/motorized wheelchair in the parks? Those things can’t get wet. Oh I know they can have a CM push people around in a wheelchair. Oh wait, Disney insurance won’t allow them to do that.
WOW I couldn’t have said it better if I tried! We have become a nation of wimps ~~ something offends one person & it’s a major problem. Really sick of PC! I recently said I didn’t like Chinese food on a certain social media & I was banned for three days! We no longer have a right to an opinion. I’m so sick of PC.
Be careful erasing history less we repeat. I’m not sure what is offensive of the scene. The chief looks great & Tiger Lily is a beauty. People didn’t always look like they do now ( thank goodness).
People need to get over it. In our society, they are so much better than they were two, three or four hundred years ago.
YOU ARE RIGHT! Not only did they own african slaves they made sure to take them along on the trail or tears. Not to mention the amount of slaughter that occured between tribes! I am offended (clutching my pearls as I type) that people talk about “white” people. Eurpoeans are not one homogenous or harmonious race. I am so sick and tired of these whining little babies. How about this Disney writers, research on how a real journalist writes and to all the flippin cry babies get some cahoonies! Quit saying Disney fans want change. It is not Disney fans, it’s these profit seeking, crybay, have nothing to do all day, non-Disney fan groups asking for change.
I wasn’t going to dignify any of these ridiculous angry screeds with a response, but I have to say that I’m completely baffled over how you think people who are saying the scene should be removed or making a profit from saying so.
If Peter Pan’s Ride and Splash Mountain so offensive, why are the lines so long for these rides? I would think you would be able to hop right on with no wait.
I can’t believe that people now a days are so interested in erasing the history books. You have to realize that history will always be remembered in people’s mind. If a Disney ride is offensive to you personally because you are offended by the real history of this country, then “don’t ride it” stay away from it, but don’t try to make corporations or private businesses change because of your stupid comments and believes. History will always be there. You should try to make yourself a better loving person to others and show respect and compassion which is what the world needs today, and stop complaining about things that are not to your liking.
Here’s a great idea for all of these constantly offended people, Disney should take a one of their seldom used parking lots and dump these perpetually offended people there and let them enjoy themselves as they play in their imaginary land of bland and empty PC correctness.
Hey people, you could even name it Orwell World!!!
Newsflash: The term “Native American” means anyone who was born on the American continent. Yeah, look up the definition of “native.” The correct term would be Aboriginal Americans.
As for the topic: Yeah, get rid of everything in Disney World that might be outdated and/or offends someone somehow. Tear it all down and then the Karens can stand in the swamp that Disney World was built upon. But then the Karens would be offended by something in Nature and want it removed. Oh wait, the rush to entirely get rid of Carbon Dioxide from our atmosphere means that all plant life on the planet would die, because plants use CO2 to generate O2 (oxygen) which humans need to breathe. Keep cancelling everything! Keep it up. I can’t wait until all these corporations cancel themselves out of white guilt or whatever the term of the week is…

Long before the band performance, I knew that Disney would face some pressure because of this depiction on the Peter Pan attraction.
