Imagine having the gall to believe you have any authority to ‘educate’ anyone when you’re profession is getting overpaid out the a** for memorizing lines. Imagine actually shilling out for soulless live action Disney remake.
and you don’t get to be a ‘Latina princess’ just because a German fairy tale is popular in Spanish speaking countries. Does that make Cinderella or Pinocchio Russian fairy tales? Both are popular and both have their own versions with Pinocchio being completely rewritten by Tolstoy. What is this absolute mind numbing obsession that everything needs to cater to everybody and everything needs ‘representation’. i don’t see this coming from the Eastern European minorities in the West despite the ‘representation’ of Eastern Europeans in Western Cinema basically equates to poor thugs. Do you not realized how dehumanizing it actually sounds when you make the argument “people can finally relate to themselves when they see people of their color on screen”. Are you that tribal that you can’t connect to a character simply because their pigmentation doesn’t match yours?
Sorry you can’t handle that the world isn’t all white people all the time. It’s ironic though that your final question is you in a nutshell: “are you that tribal that you can’t connect to a character simply because their pigmentation doesn’t match yours?” You hit the nail on your own head
You’ve taken one sentence, tweaked it a little bit out context and then tried to paint Ivan with a broad paint brush. The character’s name is Snow WHITE for cripes sake. I wouldn’t ac ept a golden, bronzed Caucasian in the role either.
The reason you don’t usually see a Latina Snow White, is because the description of the character since the Brothers Grimms is ‘Skin, white as snow, hair, black as ebony’. I’m sure she’ll do a good job, but rather than remake knowing there’ll be controversy, why not, I don’t know, create an original story with a Latina princess rather than over-saturate the remake market with subpar movies that never live up to the originals.
Agreed. Come up with an original story. As for the Dwarf controversy, the story is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Full stop. Making a film about dwarfs isn’t insensitive. In the story’s context, dwarfs are a fantasy race of people as in the Tolkien films. They are not short humans.
I agree here again, with both of you. The growing trend is a demand for new movies and enough with remakes already!
The dwarves were not portrayed as stumbling, funny walking buffoons in the animated original. They were individuals and each had his own personality.
I think it should be called, not to offend, any cultures
“Neutral Colored Person of Hierarchy and the Uneven Numbered of Perfect Human Specimans”, so as not to upset any human being. Yes, SARCASM
Who in their right mind at Disney would think that this project is a good idea? When I first heard about it my reaction was how are they going to handle the drawfs in this woke world? So now we have one side with the loss of jobs and the other with little people should never do this. The skin tone of Snow White never entered my mind. So if Disney really wants to go down this route the best strategy is to change the title and make a Latina version just like what was done with The Wiz. Oh no, that would take too much work and creativity. As far as Zegler is concerned it seems to me that she is trying to save her job and paycheck.
Again, the actress doesn’t fit the description of the character. Time for a Latino to write a story about a princess, not rely on rewriting wypipo stories.
There is a reason she is called Snow White. Skin white as snow. Sorry you don’t fit the image. Make up a new story a latina princess instead of trying to ruin a beloved classic. More catering to the left.
The character is a brunette and the actress is a brunette. I don’t see any conflict can you honestly look at the actress and tell what race she is?
If the story was posted with a picture of the actress in and the picture of the character with no mention of anything else, I can promise you no one in the American journalist community would say a word.
Why is it the American press is gaga-drooling-at-the-mouth-addicted over race?
Her condescension toward those who have issues with changes in a classic and beloved property, is disgusting. Personally, I won’t waste my time or money on it (I’m sure plenty will). The facts that she is pushing this performance and opportunity, as a way to get a point across instead of endear herself or entertain others says it all.
*Sigh*……….
Changing a characters original race and look is called white-washing, correct? And that’s supposed to be a big no-no right?
Oh wait…..it’s perfectly fine, and even encouraged as being inclusive, as long as your changing the skin, which is “White as snow”, to something else yeah? It’s okay as long as it’s being changed FROM white TO something different…..
What matters is the final box office numbers. Will people pay for Snow Brown and the Seven Magical Creatures? If so, there’s nothing wrong with that. If not, then Disney will miss out on some serious money. Defending the show is easy enough. If it makes money, then what’s everybody complaining about? If it bombs, then that’s because people are racists. Disney’s got it covered, except for their wallet. And you never know. Maybe people will watch it just because of the actress just to show how woke they are, the way Christian all swarmed to watch the Passion of the Christ movie. Be interesting to see how the movie fares in the box office.
Personally, I don’t understand why anybody would want to watch remakes, but some people do, enough for Disney to gross a billion dollars per movie. So it’s really worth it. They didn’t cast a non-white actress for Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast, probably because of Snow White’s emphasis on being white and Disney has a boatload of white guilt. If you look at Disney World, for example, you will see that most guests are white and most workers are latino and black, and Disney isn’t making things better by raising prices and removing benefits. The casting of a latina for Snow White is Disney’s attempt at whitewashing their true existence: Disney exists to hire latinas to serve white people.
I don’t have a problem with any particular race. My problem is, Disney keeps changing the story lines of the animation movies. If they’re going to bring the animation to life, recreate the original story, don’t change the story. Don’t take things out or add things that weren’t there. Don’t modernize it to satisfy today’s crazy changing world.
As someone who is pale with dark hair, Snow White was the only Disney princess I really related to. The rest of the women who looked like me were always the villains. Disney now has princesses of color. So yes, I am offended that they felt the need to change Snow White, who’s skin is very pale, to an actress of color. I also think that characters who are supposed to be another race should 100% always be cast by members of that race and not white people. But since I disagree with a canonically pale character with black hair I’ll probably be called a racist. 🙄
She’s called Snow White because her skin is as white as snow. People can have skin that pale, evidence being myself as my own skin is so white that I blended into the white background of my passport photo and it actually got rejected because the computer couldn’t make out the outline of my face. A Latino princess would be amazing, but instead of changing one whose name literally exists because of her skin colour, why not create a new one, a princess that all girls of latino descent can look up to and have to idolise.
Imagine getting this upset over the race of a fictional character. Get over yourselves! It’s not that serious. Shes Latina, so what! Just like when people had a fit about the little mermaid being black. This is not the biography of a real person. Its Disney.
Hey I was upset that they lost the red hair, I didn’t care so much about race. I will admit though that Ariel is the only Disney Princess that looks like me, pale with red hair. I related to her and The Little Mermaid was the first movie I ever saw in the theater.
You people are ALL SO FUNNY arguing about a CARTOON Remake 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I personally Loved the “Mulan” remake. It was Wonderful because I Love ❤️ Martial Arts 🥋 and this had some pretty good action scenes in it. Yay 🥳🎉🥳🎉🥳 Yay Mulan 🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼🥳👏🏼
Aladdin was also amazing! Will Smith did great! I was worried because I didn’t think anyone except Robin Williams could be the genie but they redid the story perfectly.❤️ I also loved beauty and the beast remake.
No matter what they call the film, it will not be Snow White. They want to complain about casting white people in roles of colored people, but are ok with cultural appropriation if it is white culture.
Come on it is just a movie, it does not matter who is playing the part we are all Americans. And we should be supporting each other not putting each other down. Over a movie.
Disney is simultaneously saying that white people aren’t good enough to be featured in movies based on stories from their cultural heritage, and that people of color aren’t worth the effort to look into the cultural heritage of in order to find any good stories there for movie-making.
This movie isn’t fighting racism, it’s reinforcing it.
This one I can agree with I love the movie enchanto but I think they need to make more like this. Instead of redoing classic Disney princess they need to listen to the people. Have princesses of different sizes and colors. Not all princesses need to be a size zero, blond and blue eyed. I would love to see a plus sized princess, an elbino princesses, princesses with physical handicaps, princesses of all races. Disney doesn’t get girls want princesses they can see the selves as. It’s empowering to little girls.
“The people that we need to educate. The people that we need to love into awareness.”
No, Ms Zeigler, this is not an issue based on racism or bigotry. Get off your pedestal and stop insulting people that disagree with with you. You need to educate your-own-self.
You helped politicize West Side Story and it was a box office fail (by Hollywood standards). Did you not learn anything? You proved your point when you took on a role that a non Hispanic was cast in in the original. The trailer looked great, you looked great, like you nailed it. I couldn’t wait to see it. That is, until you, Moreno and a few others started politicizing it. Lost my interest.
Pick your battles. You might win this one but then again, two box office fails can label you as box office poison and that’s far worse than this fictional racial injustice you think is going on over Snow White.
Personally, I could care less about a Latina being casted as Snow White. Just don’t cast people into a role simply to pander to one culture/race or another.
What I do take issue with, is Disney not coming up with more creative ideas than live remakes of previous, animated features. Then, in doing the remaking, they decide the original isn’t good enough to please ALL of the people so they change it (Snow White and the 7 dwarfs) to exclude dwarfs and add “magical creatures” via CGI, I’m sure. Really?
Seems like this will be just another waste of time adaptation that cares only about making political statements than about respecting the classic property or the people who have loved it for decades. Sounds like the creators and the star actively hate the source material so I don’t think their movie should even count as an official adaptation.
I’m interested to see how they spin it. Is the setting going to be Spain? Are they going to have the name snow white for her because compared to others around her she is fairer skinned? If they spin the storey correctly this could work and be an excellent add to the popular story of snow white. Every fairy tail can change Disney has shown this before they redid snow white before and sleeping beauty for there audience.
The whole reason why Hispanics have not been casted as Snow White is it’s a German story. Germany is not a Hispanic country. Two she was white as snow. I don’t know why this race switching. I’d push for my fairy tales and history be told. Not pushing to change someone else’s. It makes it look like noone else has a story to tell.
They’ve already lost the entire Asian market. They don’t care about Hollywood’s ‘representation’ trend. They’ll just expect someone whose skin is as white as snow, as the title suggests. And they get this girl. The cognitive dissonance will be overwhelming.
