First, they aren’t “technically exempt.” The law simply doesn’t apply to them and it was never meant to. Second, companies have a very long history of stifling free speech. People are often confused about their rights and entitlements.
Everyone is entitled to their views and have the right to express their views.
However, you are not entitled to any job nor do you have the right to expect to keep your job free of any consequences for doing or saying stupid things.
Along with people’s individual rights, companies have the right to conduct their business as they see fit. They can fire or lay off employees for any reason so long as it does not violate discrimination laws in the country they operate.
Evangeline Lily is free to express her political views. But she is not free to potentially damage the reputation of the company with which she has a contract. A contract that very likely has a clause relating to upholding the image and reputation of Disney.
Evangeline Lily is not part of the general public. She has a large following and platform due in very large part to her employment with Disney.
If you don’t like what Disney is doing you are perfectly within your rights of avoiding their products. No one is forcing you to watch Marvel movies or going to Disneyland.

What happens when an actor or actress gets dismissed from a film production / TV series \ streaming series? It hurts the fan base, because you embrace these characters – but then they are taken away.

Evangeline Lilly is entitled to her opinion as a Canadian Citizen, however I don’t think she’s contractually involved in anything Marvel related after this 3rd Film (her role of Hope Pym/The Wasp is not getting recast or killed off, there just isn’t anything Antman – Wasp related beyond the fast service restaurant at Avengers Campus located at various Walt Disney Theme Parks – and that really doesn’t involve the Cast for these movies, it just involves the Marvel Characters).
What happens when an actor or actress gets dismissed from a film production / TV series \ streaming series? It hurts the fan base, because you embrace these characters – but then they are taken away.
I may not always agree with what an actor or actress does off screen (what they choose to promote in their private lives), but I am not going to cancel them for that (that would be on par with canceling Walt Disney for the way he treated Tommy Kirk – and unfortunate situation but it was the 1960s).
