We stayed several days at Wilderness Lodge, have also stayed at the FW cabins – all were cleaned daily. And we were not asked to specify our preference.
The issue with deciding that this is “acceptable” while still paying full price is that it will never revert most likely. Disney can save a TON of money by not offering historically offered services if folks are still willing to pay full price without them. What incentive do they have to bring it back?
People just have to whine about things. First world problems.
Don’t like the fact that they don’t make your bed? Make it yourself.
EVERYWHERE is understaffed – EVERYWHERE! Disney is no different from other hotels around the country.
Having been a hotel housekeeper, I can say it’s a horrible job and people whine about everything you do. How about not being horrible slobs and complaining because your bed wasn’t made just because you are on vacation?
We keep our room as neat and clean in a hotel as we do at home. And we always tip and thank the housekeepers. They work hard in a thankless job – I know.
Absolutely agree! We have been DVC members since 1995 and there has never been a time when housekeeping has come in and made the bed. Disney is exactly what it says Welcome home! Yes Disney has changed and prices go up but that’s everything not just Disney. I don’t agree with a lot of the changes but let’s try to remember the magic! I make my bed everyday at home and Disney is my home so I make my bed everyday, wash dishes, vacuum the floor and “Heaven forbid”, clean the stove after using it! Calm down everyone and just enjoy life
Totally disagree, when you pay so much for a room you expect it to be clean and tidy, if you don’t like being a Housekeeper change your job for goodness sake.
If anything due to Covid rooms should be cleaned more not less but that’s not going to happen is it.
I think it is perfectly reasonable to expect your room to be cleaned and beds made etc daily, the price tag to stay at Disney is so high and the rooms rate has not been reduced so again from a value of money point of view its yet one more rip off.
By the way I am no slob, I do make the bed so the room is reasonably tidy before I go out in the morning and leave the Housekeeper a tip, which you expect, so I think it more than reasonable to expect the room is freshened up and made welcoming when you return.
Its not about not wanting to be a housekeeper, its about hotels not being able to fill the jobs, period. People were laid off and now many have found more desirable employment than cleaning other people’s toilets, or may not have childcare so they are staying out of the job market. If they don’t have enough staff to clean and make beds, etc. daily as they did before, you can have all the expectations you want, but reality is going to intrude on that. If you don’t like the level of service, feel free to take your money elsewhere, but good luck finding service at the same level as pre-pandemic anywhere at this point, even paying hundreds per night.
Sandra G I was responding to Jaxx comments, I understand the predicament I do, but Disney should not expect to charge its customers the same for a lesser service, I have nothing against Housekeepers, quite the opposite, my point is Disney should lower the cost of the rooms if they are not providing the service for whatever reason. Thats the point… If they charge for it you should get it – Enough said.
Ridiculous. It’s not just a staffing problem but also a way to keep the cleaning staff they do have safe. You keep your germs in there until your done and then they deep clean it. Heaven forbid your bed isn’t made and your room isn’t pristine as you vacation during a still global pandemic. None of this would have been an issue if everyone had cooperated in the beginning. This is what y’all get for whinnying to have places reopen before we collectively were actually ready.
@Julian
I agree. If a company charges a service that is expensive but provides incredible benefits or bonuses then great if you can afford it.
Same scenario but then does not even provide basic services let alone bonuses then why would any sane person choose to pay for that.
Imagine going to a grocery store and finding out that eggs have tripled in price. You get your carton of a dozen (12) eggs and find out there are only 6 in a carton and 2 are broken. Upon further inspection you find they are all like that. You ask, “why are they advertising a dozen eggs when the are only providing 4 usable eggs?”
You’re told, “it’s the pandemic”.
You say, “OK, but why am I paying for a dozen and only getting 4? I should only pay for 4.”
“Go somewhere else then, it’s the plandemic!”
I’m sorry… you can’t lay this at the feet of the housekeepers. It’s not their fault that Disney has a shortage of housekeepers. These men and women have been asked to clean more rooms in the same amount of time. They don’t do the hiring. I’m sure they all try to clean as best they can. Lay this at the feet of upper management, not even middle management, but especially NOT the housekeepers.
Every Disney problem is a “first world” problem lol. When you are paying $700 a night for a hotel and housekeeping is a listed service, you should get what you pay for.
Been staying at all star hotels for years. This has always been an option. They take care of towels and complimentary toiletries. They just don’t vacuum, dust, take out trash clean the bathroom or make the bed. Not a big deal…plus they give you a Disney gift card for choosing the “don’t clean my room option “, normally a $100 gift card.
It is ridiculous for Disney not to fully clean rooms, especially in the very expensive deluxe hotels. And if they are having a hard time hiring workers, pay them more. $700 a night rooms can support cleaners.
It has always been that part of staying in a Hotel was the pampering, being having your room attended to while you are paying for a Vacation. One of the things I miss most with Disney now is “Be Our Guest”.
Have they really been changing those sheets anyway?I have gotten in bed with bloody bandages from a previous guest, something that scratched and cut my leg, sand, all in beds that were made upon check-in.I have never believed the sheets were changed .I have always slept with socks , pj’s, and my husbands tee shirt slipped over my pillow I also always used lysol upon arriving in the entire room including pulling back the bedding and spraying completely it just made me feel better.
I say bull to your post. If I’m paying my money to stay at a place I want it cleaned. They aren’t paying me to stay there. People won’t work when they are paid to stay home, get their student loans paid off, get free food and health card. That’s why there is a worker shortage. I worked hard for my money. If I’m spending it at DW or anywhere I expect to get services.
Indeed, that has always been our preference. We’re not pigs, and I’m perfectly capable of smoothing my bedclothes and requesting a trash pickup or more supplies. While it is certainly pleasant to come back to a freshly cleaned room after a long park day, I can still enjoy myself without that service.
Was there back in Nov Dec for 10 nights at French Quarter. Housekeeping very sporadic. Towel exchange and trash removal was worst. They did not take just dirty towels, they took them all. Tiny trash can so had to ask for trash removal. No clean sheets for the stay. Do not expect beds to be made but would like clean sheets. Got better service before china plague at pop.
This is a Covid & staffing issue not an issue specific to Disney resorts. The service limits were posted, the fee schedule was posted, people made the decision to accept those conditions and then bitch incessantly about it.
And, you can get all the towels you need, just pick up the phone and ask for them. People are complaining just to complain when it’s about the size of the waste baskets in the room.
We recently stayed at Port Orleans for 8 days with 6 people in the room, and housekeeping services were simply not enough. I realize that Port Orleans is hardly a luxury resort, but at $350ish a night, I expect a lot more. In no way to I blame the housekeeping staff. This is in no way their fault. This is a management issue and moves right on up the chain. I clean up after my family every freaking day, and for the cost of a Disney vacation, I don’t think it is too much to ask for someone else to make the beds and give the floor a quick sweep for a week. I agree with what someone else said that now that Disney (and all hotels for that matter) have found that they can save money on housekeeping and people will still stay without expectation of a price drop, they will never go back to daily cleaning. I’m sorry, that’s a used car salesman way to do business, and I expect more out of Disney.
Thank you for not blaming the housekeepers. They only do as they’re told and most do work hard. It most certainly is a higher management decision and it is a foolish one. They aren’t hiring enough housekeepers and in this area (I live near Disney), $17 a hour is a workable wage. Tight in this economy but still liveable. It’s
a good income. I can guarantee you that the higher ups don’t see where the rubber meets the road – where all the true work and guest services are done. All they see is the financial bottomline. Disney just isn’t what it used to be… sadly, its ALL about the money.
I’d honestly question if they’re cleaning between guests. Or at least cleaning thoroughly.
I have Lupus, and among many other symptoms, it causes my skin to be sensitive to break outs. By breakouts, I mean my eyes puffing up, pustules, breaks in my skin – it’s a mess.
After my last trip to Disney World, I noticed a breakout starting, but only on my face. I slept in a hoodie and pants, so my face was the only thing really exposed to the bed.
Our room wasn’t cleaned once during the entire trip. But 4 days in my own unwashed sheets shouldn’t make me breakout like that. I wash my sheets at home once a week.
This really has me sick with the idea of how long it had been since someone washed those sheets last, and how many people slept in that bed since …
I can assure you they clean and sanitize between guests, and they do sanitize while you are still the guest. Linens are bagged separately, as are towels. If there are large, unknown stains of any kind, they are specially bagged. If a guest notifies that they’ve been sick, the room is cleaned and sanitized and all linens, towels are sent for special cleaning or discarded. Many of the housekeepers glove or even double glove.
My suggestion is to contact the front desk of the resort you are staying at and tell them of your issues. I have a friend who is allergic to just about anything – seriously allergic – through multiple stays at all different resorts, even DVCs, there is an annotation of allergies. She calls the week before to talk to the front desk, who enters it into the computer for housekeeping to see. If there is a throw and throw pillows in the room, housekeeping removes it. Housekeeping puts cleaned sheets over the furniture. She prefers to sleep between 2 sheets and they remove the blanket and comforter – she does bring her own blanket. She also brings her own pillow.
Stay in touch with your resort and YOU tell them all that you need… most resorts will accommodate that. If they say no, call higher for a manager. It can be done at Disney. My friend has been coming to Disney for a very long time and Disney has done everything they can to help her. It may be tough at first, but stick to your guns (an expression) and you’ll receive nevessary acommodations. Disney will try for you.
My issue with it is Disney “re-imagining” words. I asked the front desk ajd they said they changed the definition.
Just say you don’t provide housekeeping service and be transparent. That’s the part that annoyed me on my stay more than them even leaving the trash bag they were using to collect outside my room. I expected housekeeping every 2 days but that’s not what was provided (luxury resort). Most ppl are just going to eat it for the few remaining onsite perks. I woulda done this knowing there was no housekeeping. Why lie?
Why do you need someone to make your bed?? I really do not like the thought of someone in my room with my stuff. New towels, toiletries and garbage collection is all that is needed. I do expect a complete clean between guest stays.
If you pay for it you should get it. Its that simple, if you don’t want it and they give you the option great that’s your choice.
Everybody has different preferences, I like my room freshened up and the beds made, I do not leave the room in a mess quite the opposite, but I like the fact that it is going to be cleaned and freshened – If I pay for it I should get it.
The price should reflect service. If there is a cut in service, there should be a cut in price. No one wants to pay more for less. It’s ridiculous. I’ve stayed at 5 Disney resorts and the Swan/Dolphin. I will continue choosing the Swan over other Disney resorts because of the lack of service.
Because of covid they only service rooms every othervday, don’t make beds at all.you have to beg to get your coffee etc refilled.they wear masks.dont how yiu can get sick from making a bed or cleaning.we stayed back in June we had same bedding 10 days.it excuse to change more and give consumers less.
I think Deb has it right–it’s a used car sales man way of doing business. And I think the blame lies with Disney, not the customers who some here are trying to blame. How can you blame the people who stay for having expectations when they pay so much to stay on property, or in a hotel labelled luxury! The real issue is this is hurting the Disney brand. They have always sold themselves as better than other places and hotels–it is the basis for the “magic” and it is why people are willing to pay so much. And yes, people still come–now. If the reputation that got all those people excited in the first place goes years like this, they may see the people they want desperately to come and stay in their hotels and spend tons of money go elsewhere. They didn’t become loyal fans because of lousy service. If Disney were new today and went to this little effort (in more ways than hotels, BTW), it would never last–except maybe as a discount theme park.
I also think Covid is a false excuse for their problems, based on the fact that many workers have reported in social media and local forums that they were not called back and they wanted to be. It is just naive to think that they couldn’t do a better job than this for the money they charge. They are trying to see how much less they can do for more money and some people here seem to defend them while blaming customers for having normal expectations. Unbelievable!
I had a guy waking me up at All Star movies when I was taking an afternoon nap to look at the bathroom door. Lame ! This at a time before vaccinations.
Lol Disney is once again using the pandemic to justify cutting costs in a way that will never revert.
No staff? But you can staff bars, restaurants, merchandise locations, and anything involving an up-sell. Yet somehow anything that doesn’t directly generate extra revenue is “short staffed”.
Reduced food portions are an effort to reduce guest waist lines, if their CEO is to be believed by the way. But how generous of the offer to chalk it up to COVID 🤣
I was told last week that we would have cleaning service every other day – but it’s really basically just towel service, so they should just word it correctly. All they did was bring towels and take trash out. Mirrors were filthy, bed a mess, toilet and tub nasty and dirt all over the floor – and we had an 8 day stay! If I had known, I would have rented a cheaper hotel or condo offsite! Even for a “value” resort (our standard AOA room was around $200 a night) I would expect more! Especially from Disney! If I were staying at Grand Floridian and got that type of service, I would lose my mind! When I complained they brought me a broom and clean sheets so I could clean myself, :-/ if this is a staffing problem, I kinda get it, yet I saw the housekeeping staff in the room next door watching tv! And when we came back from the park the next day our tv had been turned on and left on also! Maybe if they wouldn’t watch tv, they could have time to make the bed lol. I was told it was because they’re trying to “cut down contact due to Covid” which I’m not buying – they can touch my nasty towels that I wipe my entire body with, but can’t make my bed? Doesn’t make sense. I think they have seen how much money they are saving and are just continuing that as long as they can.
Unfortunately I DID stay at the Grand Floridian for the first time in Oct 2021. It was supposed to be a dream come true. Instead it was a literal nightmare of no towels, no garbage removal, they basically threw a empty garbage bag in the room for you and that was it. For close to $900 a night……I DID nearly lose my mind. I won’t be going back for a very long time.
I have to disagree with the portion about it being due to Covid. My husband and I went in 2019 and they had changed to this limited housecleaning policy then.
I go all the time- Monthly.. and always stay on property & the rooms are never cleaned. We usually stay at the Beach Club or the Polynesian, Contemporary etc. Because I have a little one with me I started brining my own cleaning supplies. LOL yes at $700-1k a night! I am cleaning myself. They advised the same as original poster – staffing issues & covid. SUCKS to be honest I want to relax not clean but every night after dinner & parks I’m cleaning the room like a weirdo! I wish it was not this way , but we love going so it is what is is….
I’ve stayed at Ritz Carlton, Autograph Collection, and JW Marriott properties over the past year, and all of them managed to provide daily cleaning/housekeeping during the pandemic. Disney costs way more than the above luxury brands, yet fails in service compared to them in every way. Can’t just keep using the pandemic as an excuse.
The people in Housekeeping are doing their very best to make certain guests are happy (satisfied) with their room/s. They follow Disney guidelines and try to go the extra mile. My issue is some of the mistreatment housekeepers receive. How do I know? My daughter is a housekeeper. I know she and her fellow castmates work hard every day to make certain the guests’ rooms are in a clean and tidy way. Not making beds? That surprises me. I know my daughter and the other housekeepers, at her resort, change linens and make beds on the Disney schedule. She works at what is considered a “luxury resort” – a DVC resort. On the room’s scheduled light day, she changes towels, vacuums, takes out trash, wipes down touch surfaces, tidies up the kitchen area… and makes the beds. She and her peers do all they can to make magic for their guests.
When I said mistreatment, I mean that SOME guests decide to take their anger, frustration with Disney out on the housekeepers. It’s not just leaving a little mess in the room…. I’m talking about purposely making sure the room/s require an extensive, time consuming cleaning. Piles of crushed and uncrushed Froot Loops left in EVERY room… not just on the floor…. but in the bathtub, toilet, shower, lined up on the sinks, in the freezer, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator…. the coffee machine. Stomped on in every room. Large Mickey Bar chocolate prints on the sheets, mirror, table, desk, countertops, a trail on the floor and then you find the melted bar in a dresser drawer. Dishes, glasses, cups, utensils hidden in different areas – on top of the safe or in the shower. NEVER run the dishwasher and leave the dirty dishes in there days on end (oh the smell ) and leave a pile of dishes in the sink – some dirty, some looking like they were clean, but now needed to be washed. Partially eaten food left on plates and in bowls. Trash all over the rooms that could have been thrown in trash cans. My favorite is dumping multiple fruit cups on the kitchen counter, floor and around the dining area. Slippery grapes and peach pieces in syrup all over the kitchen. Never leaving a tip because the assumption is “housekeeping never did anything for us.” That’s just not true. It is so unfair to these dedicated ladies and gentlemen. They have to clean EVERY part of the room/s. They pick up and clean everything left on floors, tables, counters, dressers and dresser drawers (whaaat??), the bathroom, kitchen, balcony or patio (yes, they clean there too). They pick up after some, who feel they’re on vacation, and they don’t have to clean. These guests would never behave this way at home.
Do you know – EVERY housekeeping cast member is timed by the Disney cleaning time standard, and if they don’t meet that – they get in trouble. Real trouble. Warnings and write ups. Firings. Yes, there may be a shortage of housekeepers right now… even if Disney is paying well. Yes, so they are short-handed, which means Managers push more demands on the housekeeping staff. Move, move, move. Go, go, go. Extra rooms to clean…. but still finish on time. Many housekeeping castmates work through their lunches and breaks on a regular basis. If they end up staying later to finish their assigned rooms, they get in documented trouble. That kind of incompetence canNOT be tolerated. Yes, some managers will guide by using the fear of firing.
Not making the bed or changing linens, washing towels daily is not really required – you wouldn’t do that at home daily. At the DVCs, there are vacuum cleaners in a closet that you can use in case of an accident. Use them… you’d clean at home if something spilled or got crushed on the floor. Your vacation is not made or broken by housekeeping. The housekeeping cast members do as is required by Disney protocol, and do the very best to leave you a clean, sanitized room. You can still hit the parks for even more magic! When you come back to your room/s…. housekeepers are still there at your resort to work for you 24/7…. remember they do work hard…. thank them, leave them a handwritten note of appreciation (every Disney room has a small writing pad), and consider leaving a tip because its the right thing to do. Welcome Home.
So sorry to hear people are so uncivil. That’s just wrong. We arec DVC members and would never leave a room in that condition. We wouldn’t do that to the housekeeper or to the next guest who might not be able to get into their room on time. My feeling is that when rooms are left in the condition you described, it should be escalated immediately to management, photographed and documented. The people should be responsible for a fee just like you would pay if you smoke in the room due to the extra time and effort required to restore it to a proper condition, just like if a guest smoked in it. And warn the guest that this behavior will ban them from the hotels, just like guests could be banned from parks for inappropriate behavior. There’s just no excuse. I certainly appreciate the hard work of the housekeepers at DVC. That said I do think that if the Hampton Inn I stayed at recently can provide full daily housekeeping then there should be a way for Disney to management to make that happen in deluxe resort cash stays
Heres a super cool disney hack to get your room cleaned at disney every DAY. Its called clean your own room….I know its a crazy concept on vacation and having to clean. But surprise it takes 10 mins to clean your room and make your bed for the day and then go to the park. People feel to entitled to their bed being made and whole room being clean when they come back. Im sorry karen you have you make your own bed on vacation but I promise you’ll live to see the next day.
Um, for $500+ per night at many of these resorts yes, I expect my room to be cleaned and a bed made. That’s called staying in a hotel. This isn’t Motel 8.
Cool then don’t stay at a Disney hotel then cause they arent making your bed lol its that simple. I honestly think anyone spending 500+ a night for a Disney hotel is kind of a sucker but hey that’s just me.
Collen your post makes no sense. On one hand you say just suck it up and don’t stay there if you want your bed made. But then you’re also saying you’re a sucker for paying their prices?
Josh how does it not make sense its just my opinion. My opinion is as a adult I can make my own bed on vacation, its not hard for me to get up in the morning make my bed and enjoy my day at the park. As well as I personally think spending 500 dollars a night is way to much when they have 200 dollar value resorts. I could never justify spending that night at a hotel. hey maybe we’re just different people. You want people to make your bed and I can just make my own.
Collen m opinion as an adult is I agree with Josh, If you pay for it you should get it.
Disney should not charge for the Service as advertised if they are not going to provide it – That’s all I am saying.
You don’t go to a restaurant pay for food and get an empty plate do you? Its the same thing.
Hey Im glad you agree with Josh Julian. But the idea you’re getting an “empty plate” doesn’t compare in my opinion. Because at the end of the day you still got the room clean before you got into the room and then someone will have to clean the horrible mess kids and families leave after. So more likely you’re getting half of your “plate”.
And you can morally want a “discount” on your room because you didn’t get what you paid for that’s fine. I’m a realistic person disney is not gonna give people hundreds of dollars in discounts because their housekeepers aren’t providing full service. It’s just funny people are willing to spending 1000 dollars but they want this small discount because their room wasn’t clean? I mean you can die on this hill if you want. If you want your hotel room clean I recommend other hotels outside of disney they are less packed and can give service daily and is cheaper.
For those of you saying you don’t like strangers in your room, so you don’t mind housekeeping not coming in, well, there is a security check every day where someone is walking into your room, and looking around! So don’t be fooled there. Next, it used to be Disney would give you a gift card if you opted out of cleaning every day. But it seems like they are not giving that choice to current customers, and are still charging for a service which they are not providing. So quit telling adults to get over it, clean up after themselves, quit whining, etc. Cool if you want to do your own room. We always did/do. But not because I didn’t want strangers in there, more because I got tired of little things being stolen from us. Then I thought cool, opt out, get a gift card. Awesome. Clean up, make beds as usual, but I don’t need to hide every little thing which might appeal to sticky fingers. Next thing I know, the door has not been shut all the way, and then find out “security” is coming into the room each day doing a “walk through” to check. That ladies and gentlemen is when I said I was done staying on Disney property any longer. Also, I get it. You are on vacation, you’ve paid for this experience, and you’d like to enjoy not being responsible while you are pretending the outside world does not exist. Sometimes we all get tired of responsibilities, and it’s the one little thing that makes it magical. Especially if you are a wife, mom, daughter, and the one constantly in charge of running everything. You want to feel pampered, and maybe that bed making is what someone needs to feel pampered. You can’t fault them for that. It’s not your job to judge. So either Disney provides the service, or they knock the down, but either way, they are the ones to blame. Not the poor customer who is looking for a little relief from the day to day drudgery of life.
Must be an old article. Last time I visited DW was dec 2021. All rooms cleaned daily. Mask mandates were dropped except on rise of the resistance. Capacity was not limited although you still had to use the reservation system. And honk Kong Disney has been open since July 2020. So what is this article talking about?
It’s like going to a restaurant claiming to be fine dining, and commanding fine dining prices– but being asked to order food through an app, serve your own drinks, clear your own tables at the end of the meal, and go back and wash your own dishes.
What’s next? Provide your own sheets? Bring your own towels and washcloths?
I think we just have to different values of what we want so I can respectfully disagree with you. You may see as you’re getting a empty plate but I went to a Disney resort recently and it didn’t feel like I was getting a “empty plate” when I got no housekeeping. I don’t want a discount or a gift card for not getting housekeeping. I think it’s the values I don’t value a discount for a hotel and I find no value in hotels.like the grand Floridian or other luxury hotels. I don’t go to Disney for a hotel room I go to Disney to enjoy the park. At the end of the day I realize Disney doesn’t want to heard guest opinion on saving money. Disney sees guest and dollar signs and they know the next family will come spend thousands of dollars. These resorts don’t rely on repeat consumers they reply on tourists spending stupid amounts of money.
They don’t clean the room, but at WDW resorts they do have enough staff to go into every room every day for a ‘visual inspection’, even with the Room Occupied sign on the door (notice that they don’t provide Do Not Disturb signs).
I was in the shower, no one else in the room, sign on the door, door locked with all locks (they seem to be able to unlock the internal lock) and needed to grab something from the sink. Luckily I had a towel wrapped around me. When I went to complain at the front desk, they said that I acknowledged, via their web booking, that they can enter the room whenever they want for any reason. When I pointed out that I booked via phone, thus couldn’t have acknowledged anything online, they then said I signed at check in. When I asked where it was written, they showed me a small plaque at the opposite end of the check in desk – a good 50+ feet away. They definitely don’t want people to know about this policy. They take the time to explain that they won’t be offering room service but omit that they will still enter the room.
The funniest thing is, they can’t get their story straight for why they do this and each employee has a different reason. I heard it was:
1) For my safety, in case I slipped in the tub.
2) To make sure the room doesn’t need repair (are the hotels falling apart where they need to check every room daily??).
3) To see if I need more coffee or soap.
If there’s less work to be done because of staffing issues, and the prices are the same. Either customers are getting overcharged, or their staff were underpaid.
That’s the bottom line, there’s no personal customer ethical or moral dilemma for any of this.
Disney wants us to argue amongst ourselves over what level of annoyance we can tolerate while they continue to line their pockets.
This is just more of Disney being unreasonable. When I stay at the motel 6 for more than one day they come in and make the bed and do a quick once over on the room. At Disney’s price point the room should be spotless after a day at the park.
I got nothing but nice things to say about the staff here in Las Vegas Off Strip Resorts, and the staff at Knott’s Berry Farm Hotel – I can’t comment about the Hotels along the Disneyland Resort (all I can say is if you want service? please tip them! 💵’s talk in the hospitality industry from valet parking to waitresses to bartenders to maid service – please don’t be a cheapskate, it’s bad enough the Walt Disney CEO is one!)
We cannot expect the same level of service, because all the good workers ‘know their worth’ (if you were foolish enough to put your quality staff on unpaid furloughs forcing everyone to look for work elsewhere? don’t expect them to come crawling back to work for you again!)
Plenty of services are going to be automated (humans will be replaced by machines and / or particular services will be done via and app!) so there goes your personal service experience (and there goes your Disney Magic!)
To everybody that commented “why would Team Disney offer up certain services that cost them extra when they don’t have to” (or “expect those particular services to resume but they won’t be free – it will be another upcharge”) you nailed it!
Now excuse me while I plan another Boysenberry Festival Vacation at Knott’s Berry Farm (I won’t go broke doing that, which means I will make sure to tip everybody well and thank them for their exemplary services!)
I know as far as Disney world, this is bs. My roommate is a house keeper at dw and a light stay includes the beds. And everything mentioned above. At any moment the guest also had the ability to ask for their bedding to be changed too. I think people like to just make up stuff and complain. They litterally has a complain filed cuz the toilet paper wasn’t folded into a triangle.
I’m sure when Disney takes legal action, they’ll be sure to consult you, CJ. You seem like an expert in law, as well as condescending language to the offender (i.e. calling reporter “young lady”). Pretty much their work is already done. They should cut you a check for a million $$$.
This isn’t new. Disney hasn’t been providing full service housekeeper since they reopened in June 2020. It’s a modified service. You can still call housekeeping and ask for items intermittently between times they come into your room. Is it a downgrade yes, to a certain degree, as you expect full service regardless of where you stay on property. However Disney has also been short staffed so appreciate what you can get. I have no sympathy for anyone who doesn’t do their homework before they travel and complains about lack of services. There’s tons of resources. Use them.
This is really nothing new. I stayed at POFQ in April 2019 for 2 weeks, and opted out of daily housekeeping. They would bring clean towels and sheets upon request, but would not make the beds. We emptied our own trash. It wasn’t a big deal, we have to do it at home anyway, we don’t have a maid. I felt bad for the Mousekeepers who depend on that tip money to get by, as they are the ones really affected.
Comments for Guest Angry After Learning Disney Doesn’t Clean “Luxury” Hotel Rooms
Brooke
We stayed several days at Wilderness Lodge, have also stayed at the FW cabins – all were cleaned daily. And we were not asked to specify our preference.
Luke
The issue with deciding that this is “acceptable” while still paying full price is that it will never revert most likely. Disney can save a TON of money by not offering historically offered services if folks are still willing to pay full price without them. What incentive do they have to bring it back?
R
@Luke
Totally agree with you. As long as dopes accept less for more money then that is exactly what they will continue to get.
Jaxx
People just have to whine about things. First world problems.
Don’t like the fact that they don’t make your bed? Make it yourself.
EVERYWHERE is understaffed – EVERYWHERE! Disney is no different from other hotels around the country.
Having been a hotel housekeeper, I can say it’s a horrible job and people whine about everything you do. How about not being horrible slobs and complaining because your bed wasn’t made just because you are on vacation?
We keep our room as neat and clean in a hotel as we do at home. And we always tip and thank the housekeepers. They work hard in a thankless job – I know.
Margie
Absolutely agree! We have been DVC members since 1995 and there has never been a time when housekeeping has come in and made the bed. Disney is exactly what it says Welcome home! Yes Disney has changed and prices go up but that’s everything not just Disney. I don’t agree with a lot of the changes but let’s try to remember the magic! I make my bed everyday at home and Disney is my home so I make my bed everyday, wash dishes, vacuum the floor and “Heaven forbid”, clean the stove after using it! Calm down everyone and just enjoy life
Eva
DVC is different then for cash hotel rooms or villas.
Julian H
Sandra G
Its not about not wanting to be a housekeeper, its about hotels not being able to fill the jobs, period. People were laid off and now many have found more desirable employment than cleaning other people’s toilets, or may not have childcare so they are staying out of the job market. If they don’t have enough staff to clean and make beds, etc. daily as they did before, you can have all the expectations you want, but reality is going to intrude on that. If you don’t like the level of service, feel free to take your money elsewhere, but good luck finding service at the same level as pre-pandemic anywhere at this point, even paying hundreds per night.
Julian H
Sandra G I was responding to Jaxx comments, I understand the predicament I do, but Disney should not expect to charge its customers the same for a lesser service, I have nothing against Housekeepers, quite the opposite, my point is Disney should lower the cost of the rooms if they are not providing the service for whatever reason. Thats the point… If they charge for it you should get it – Enough said.
Bea
Julian H
Bea if they offer a reduced service then they should reduce the cost. Its that simple.
If you go to a restaurant and order a meal, I’m sure you would complain if all they gave you was an empty plate?
If they will not offer the full service as advertised and charged for, then they need to be truthful and reduce the cost.
Lumpp Brendarenda
Why do you print a story almost a year old and just give it a new date. There is REAL news you could be reporting on.
R
@Julian
Janny
I’m sorry… you can’t lay this at the feet of the housekeepers. It’s not their fault that Disney has a shortage of housekeepers. These men and women have been asked to clean more rooms in the same amount of time. They don’t do the hiring. I’m sure they all try to clean as best they can. Lay this at the feet of upper management, not even middle management, but especially NOT the housekeepers.
Tom
“if you don’t like being a Housekeeper change your job for goodness sake,” I think they heard you, and that is the problem! LOL!
Sandra G
Agree with everything you said.
Stephanie
Every Disney problem is a “first world” problem lol. When you are paying $700 a night for a hotel and housekeeping is a listed service, you should get what you pay for.
Lanette Barry
Been staying at all star hotels for years. This has always been an option. They take care of towels and complimentary toiletries. They just don’t vacuum, dust, take out trash clean the bathroom or make the bed. Not a big deal…plus they give you a Disney gift card for choosing the “don’t clean my room option “, normally a $100 gift card.
Bierontap
It is ridiculous for Disney not to fully clean rooms, especially in the very expensive deluxe hotels. And if they are having a hard time hiring workers, pay them more. $700 a night rooms can support cleaners.
Ella Harmeyer
The ‘service your way’ provided a gift card with $10 per night for each day you choose NOT to have full cleaning services.
Julian H
TOTALLY AGREE AND THIS WAS A POINT i MADE EARLIER – – WELL SAID STEPHANIE
Tina M.
It has always been that part of staying in a Hotel was the pampering, being having your room attended to while you are paying for a Vacation. One of the things I miss most with Disney now is “Be Our Guest”.
Tina M.
Joey
I say bull to your post. If I’m paying my money to stay at a place I want it cleaned. They aren’t paying me to stay there. People won’t work when they are paid to stay home, get their student loans paid off, get free food and health card. That’s why there is a worker shortage. I worked hard for my money. If I’m spending it at DW or anywhere I expect to get services.
Jason
You could always just not be nasty. We always turned down mousekeeping because we clean up after ourselves.
Nick
Nothing new. It’s been this way at every hotel I’ve stayed at for 2 years now. I honestly prefer no Housekeeping during my stay.
Sandra G
Indeed, that has always been our preference. We’re not pigs, and I’m perfectly capable of smoothing my bedclothes and requesting a trash pickup or more supplies. While it is certainly pleasant to come back to a freshly cleaned room after a long park day, I can still enjoy myself without that service.
Julian H
Then Disney should not charge for the Service as advertised if they are not going to provide it – That’s all I am saying.
You don’t go to a restaurant pay for food and get an empty plate do you? Its the same thing.
Angie Reed
Disney is just a total complete rip off! Not surprised they would take away services and still expect you to pay the same
AH
Was there back in Nov Dec for 10 nights at French Quarter. Housekeeping very sporadic. Towel exchange and trash removal was worst. They did not take just dirty towels, they took them all. Tiny trash can so had to ask for trash removal. No clean sheets for the stay. Do not expect beds to be made but would like clean sheets. Got better service before china plague at pop.
Nick
This is a Covid & staffing issue not an issue specific to Disney resorts. The service limits were posted, the fee schedule was posted, people made the decision to accept those conditions and then bitch incessantly about it.
And, you can get all the towels you need, just pick up the phone and ask for them. People are complaining just to complain when it’s about the size of the waste baskets in the room.
Deb
Anonymous For A Reason
Thank you for not blaming the housekeepers. They only do as they’re told and most do work hard. It most certainly is a higher management decision and it is a foolish one. They aren’t hiring enough housekeepers and in this area (I live near Disney), $17 a hour is a workable wage. Tight in this economy but still liveable. It’s
a good income. I can guarantee you that the higher ups don’t see where the rubber meets the road – where all the true work and guest services are done. All they see is the financial bottomline. Disney just isn’t what it used to be… sadly, its ALL about the money.
Shawn Spillane
This really has me sick with the idea of how long it had been since someone washed those sheets last, and how many people slept in that bed since …
John
This is a fair challenge. There were broken items in my room that would have been easily identified in a sweep of the room.
Anonymous For A Reason
John
My issue with it is Disney “re-imagining” words. I asked the front desk ajd they said they changed the definition.
Just say you don’t provide housekeeping service and be transparent. That’s the part that annoyed me on my stay more than them even leaving the trash bag they were using to collect outside my room. I expected housekeeping every 2 days but that’s not what was provided (luxury resort). Most ppl are just going to eat it for the few remaining onsite perks. I woulda done this knowing there was no housekeeping. Why lie?
Patti
Why do you need someone to make your bed?? I really do not like the thought of someone in my room with my stuff. New towels, toiletries and garbage collection is all that is needed. I do expect a complete clean between guest stays.
Julian H
If you pay for it you should get it. Its that simple, if you don’t want it and they give you the option great that’s your choice.
Everybody has different preferences, I like my room freshened up and the beds made, I do not leave the room in a mess quite the opposite, but I like the fact that it is going to be cleaned and freshened – If I pay for it I should get it.
Stephanie
The price should reflect service. If there is a cut in service, there should be a cut in price. No one wants to pay more for less. It’s ridiculous. I’ve stayed at 5 Disney resorts and the Swan/Dolphin. I will continue choosing the Swan over other Disney resorts because of the lack of service.
Dawn Obrien
Because of covid they only service rooms every othervday, don’t make beds at all.you have to beg to get your coffee etc refilled.they wear masks.dont how yiu can get sick from making a bed or cleaning.we stayed back in June we had same bedding 10 days.it excuse to change more and give consumers less.
pattimarie
Kathleen
I hate having housekeeping come in. I’m perfectly fine taking care of things myself and not having a stranger touch my stuff.
CE
But they do come into your room every day, even if you ask them not too! They just don’t do anything while in there.
Thomas
I had a guy waking me up at All Star movies when I was taking an afternoon nap to look at the bathroom door. Lame ! This at a time before vaccinations.
Matt
Lol Disney is once again using the pandemic to justify cutting costs in a way that will never revert.
No staff? But you can staff bars, restaurants, merchandise locations, and anything involving an up-sell. Yet somehow anything that doesn’t directly generate extra revenue is “short staffed”.
Reduced food portions are an effort to reduce guest waist lines, if their CEO is to be believed by the way. But how generous of the offer to chalk it up to COVID 🤣
Holly
Danielle
Unfortunately I DID stay at the Grand Floridian for the first time in Oct 2021. It was supposed to be a dream come true. Instead it was a literal nightmare of no towels, no garbage removal, they basically threw a empty garbage bag in the room for you and that was it. For close to $900 a night……I DID nearly lose my mind. I won’t be going back for a very long time.
Snoopy
I have to disagree with the portion about it being due to Covid. My husband and I went in 2019 and they had changed to this limited housecleaning policy then.
Nehn
All tourists do is complain omg.
jessica j
I go all the time- Monthly.. and always stay on property & the rooms are never cleaned. We usually stay at the Beach Club or the Polynesian, Contemporary etc. Because I have a little one with me I started brining my own cleaning supplies. LOL yes at $700-1k a night! I am cleaning myself. They advised the same as original poster – staffing issues & covid. SUCKS to be honest I want to relax not clean but every night after dinner & parks I’m cleaning the room like a weirdo! I wish it was not this way , but we love going so it is what is is….
Josh
I’ve stayed at Ritz Carlton, Autograph Collection, and JW Marriott properties over the past year, and all of them managed to provide daily cleaning/housekeeping during the pandemic. Disney costs way more than the above luxury brands, yet fails in service compared to them in every way. Can’t just keep using the pandemic as an excuse.
Anonymous For A Reason
This is a looong one, folks.
Happy
Collen
Heres a super cool disney hack to get your room cleaned at disney every DAY. Its called clean your own room….I know its a crazy concept on vacation and having to clean. But surprise it takes 10 mins to clean your room and make your bed for the day and then go to the park. People feel to entitled to their bed being made and whole room being clean when they come back. Im sorry karen you have you make your own bed on vacation but I promise you’ll live to see the next day.
Josh
Um, for $500+ per night at many of these resorts yes, I expect my room to be cleaned and a bed made. That’s called staying in a hotel. This isn’t Motel 8.
Collen
Cool then don’t stay at a Disney hotel then cause they arent making your bed lol its that simple. I honestly think anyone spending 500+ a night for a Disney hotel is kind of a sucker but hey that’s just me.
Josh
Collen your post makes no sense. On one hand you say just suck it up and don’t stay there if you want your bed made. But then you’re also saying you’re a sucker for paying their prices?
Collen
Josh how does it not make sense its just my opinion. My opinion is as a adult I can make my own bed on vacation, its not hard for me to get up in the morning make my bed and enjoy my day at the park. As well as I personally think spending 500 dollars a night is way to much when they have 200 dollar value resorts. I could never justify spending that night at a hotel. hey maybe we’re just different people. You want people to make your bed and I can just make my own.
Julian H
Collen m opinion as an adult is I agree with Josh, If you pay for it you should get it.
Disney should not charge for the Service as advertised if they are not going to provide it – That’s all I am saying.
You don’t go to a restaurant pay for food and get an empty plate do you? Its the same thing.
Collen
Bren
Josh
Amen, they can’t clean your room, but they sure can have security come in daily and poke around your stuff.
Julian H
Disney should not charge for the Service as advertised if they are not going to provide it – That’s all I am saying.
You don’t go to a restaurant pay for food and get an empty plate do you? Its the same thing.
ChazATL
Must be an old article. Last time I visited DW was dec 2021. All rooms cleaned daily. Mask mandates were dropped except on rise of the resistance. Capacity was not limited although you still had to use the reservation system. And honk Kong Disney has been open since July 2020. So what is this article talking about?
Walt's Ghost
Disney has y’all duped.
Collen
Collen

And as usual consumers will take it.
