People are stupid. There is no such thing as blaccent, accents are not related to skin color but region. It’s literally the way she talks, growing up NY. No one is boycotting anything but an insignificant amt of idiots who don’t know what they are talking about. We’re boycotting people for the way they speak now, I mean really. Get over yourselfs

    1. Sarah M

I totally agree, Jeff. This is coming from a black personal by the way. It’s stupid, and frankly, childish. Why are we gatekeeping the way someone talks? The chick grew up in queens, what do you expect? We need to get over ourselves.

      1. Angela

Getting very very tired of people wanting to cancel people out for the way they talk or simply for something that was said in the long ago past. I liked Awkawafina the way she talked amused me. To boycott some one making a living who has done nothing wrong but to speak in a funny accent. Or so it’s said. Didn’t know accent’s only belong to certain people. I’m southern I’ve been told I have an accent but when I hear someone not from the south try to use a southern accent I don’t go yelling fire them boycott them. It’s just getting too much.

    2. Ramon L.

I’m very thankful that someone said something…from the person that wrote this article and to all that have given her and continue to give her backlash..they need to get a life and leave her alone! As a New York native POC..she was never offensive-IDIOTS ..those who claim to be fans of hers/those w/platforms of influence(CNN, Nsenga Burton,Britni Danielle) are abusing sensitives of these times to bother a person that never did anything offensive! You guys need to get a life! You take a walk in Uptown Manhattan, the hood in BK or the BX..jackson heights or jamaica in queens and see how the ppl who grew up there talk!!

    3. Are you:
      1) Black?
      2) From New York City?
      3) Her spokesperson?
      4) None of the Above?

Then you need to mind your damn business. So tired of non-Black people telling Black people what is a ‘Blaccent’ and what isn’t. She talks like a suburban White girl that has never even looked at NYC. She does not sound Black (and we do have an accent) in the least, she didn’t grow up in Queensbridge Housing, she grew up in a Queens suburb and she refuses to do Asian tropes/minstrel characters, but will play Black. Stay the F out of our business. Thank you.

      1. Samuel

Glad to know that you can no longer speak about anything non-black, non-adult, non-male. Honestly by your logic from this moment on you were only allowed to speak about things that are exactly related to your skin color. And since you aren’t a white suburban you have no authority here. Do us a favor and shut up

      2. Donald Wood

Grow up, get over your specifically owned accent! Even saying that sounds rediculous!

      3. Tj

Why is your hair dyed blonde?

      4. Mac

Seriously go worry about something that matters this is seriously childish!

      5. James

I’m tired of black pretending to have a monopoly on something after straightening and dying their hair so they can look more white. Never seen a natural blonde black person before. Cultural appropriation doesn’t exist. If it does, black people need to speak their native tongue or ghetto slang and not the white man’s English.

        1. Eric

You do know black people were taken and had no choice but to learn English?…there was this thing called slavery a few years back, look into it and educate yourself. “Native” where are native white people from?….england?, Your family from Ireland? Etc??? Why don’t you speak your native language?

      6. Ricky

Since I’m not black please explain what a “blaccent” is.

      7. Cindy

Awkwafina is a character Nora lum made up. It’s an alter ego. With a different accent. She is not dissing black people, just creating a character. That’s what actors do! Plenty of actors use different accents to get jobs. Leave her alone for God’s sake.

      8. Rick

People need to get over themselves! I don’t remember the African-American community getting bent out of shape when Whoopi Goldberg was doing her valley girl accent. By the way for those of you who are younger that’s the gig that made her famous!

    4. Htk

That’s not true, the fact is her accent is fake. She’s been called out for it many times by people that grew up with her. She did not grow up hanging with black people as she claims, she went to private and prestigious schools her entire life, the only blacks she had interacted with were not “ghetto”. Her lingo and verbiage was an act to be that Asian girl who tries to sound black. Nothing more nothing less. She has no idea it would carry her this far.

      1. Mac

File under the category who gives a rip? The whole world needs a zanax

      2. Ricky

Of course her accent is fake. Awkwafina is a made up character that Nora Lum created

        1. Rick

Did you know that white people didn’t make black people slaves? Did you know that African tribes defeated other African tribes and then sold the defeated tribe into slavery? You know white people aren’t the ill of everything that’s ever happened to the black community in this planet. Maybe if people stop trying to blame everybody else for everything and just started making themselves better people? Just an idea it’s what my Irish ancestors did when they came here. By the way are you aware that the United States was neither the first nor the last country to institute or end slavery?

      3. Jon

Cancelling people is childish. Keep cancelling people and one day you will be cancelled too.

    5. CC1

Right Jeff! People speak like their surroundings. I saw an Asian man on the news. He was born in Texas and had a Texas drawl. It was wonderful. Some people say coke, some people say soda and some say pop. Awkafina is a great actress and comedian who doesn’t deserve this kind of treatment. Comments about her speaking differently in different roles is called acting. Tom Holland has an English accent but speaks American English for his role in Spiderman. No one is bashing him. People need to find a positive means to release the hate they have. This isn’t the way. Take the time to LEARN about how people speak in different areas of America. Stop expecting people to be exactly alike in every way.

      1. Dr. Commonsense

I can’t fathom any person trying to own ghetto ebonics…let alone be proud of it.

    6. Nick

The first comment its reasonable. I also have never understood the vocal minority of cancel culturists. Everyone can have an opinion but to assert yours over everyone else, especially when it comes to trying to have someone loose their job. This country was founded on a legal system where people are judged by a jury of their peers, not an uneducated mob. In this case there is no crime. If you don’t like Awkwafina’s comedy just don’t watch her. Personally I find a lot of her performances to be really good. Not my all-time favorite actress but she is talented.

    7. Maria

I agree. Always looking for something to be offended about.

    8. Totally agree with you

    9. Alishia

      Agree 100%

  2. Catherine

Do not like her at all!

    1. I missed to like her before I realized she keeps doubling down on that fake accent. It’s insulting and she was so self-righteous when discussing NOT doing Asian minstrel characters.

      1. Ima Cool

Dude, find something actually important to get angry about. Awkwafina’s accent, whether “real” or “fake” is done for performance sake. She is funny, Period. Now, move on to being freaked out over Eminem’s “blaccent.”

  3. People will cry and raise Hell over anything. I find it hilarious. If I could incite that kind of reaction from these insignificant rubes, I’d be the happiest guy on earth.

    1. You’re the only insignificant rube on here, WM. You need to mind your business, that has been y’all problem throughout history, not minding you damn business.

      1. Donald Wood

Your the ones putting all this crap out there! And you talk about minding your own business! How is her accent your business! Moron!!

      2. You're Welcome

CFG, hate to break it to you, but 99.99% of Americans don’t care about her accent, aren’t offended by it, and roll their eyes at overreaching cancel culture.

There’s actual racism and inequality in the world. Focus on that. Nitpicking one POC for talking like a different POC does nothing but destroy credibility of social justice warriors and turn reasonable people off from wanting to listen to these discussions (even the relevant ones) in the future.

      3. Mac

Kettle calling the cauldron black? Why don’t you mind your own damn business and quit worrying about trivial things because for some reason you’re butt hurt?

      4. Billy badass

Oh look, a black man with blonde hair…… Wait a minute, that’s cultural appropriation.

      5. Chris

Nice hair. You’re as guilty as she is of appropriation.

      6. Maria

Why are you so fragile blondy? So what if she talks like that for her character parts. Incidentally, stop stealing white culture by driving a vehicle, Flying on planes, eating Chinese food and trying to be us with your goldilocks, using a cell phone, buying Gucci or basically using everything we invented because all y’all have is peanut butter to y’all name! BWAHAHAHAHA! Grow up. I know you must be so ashamed.

  4. Mike

    Love Awkwafina!!

    1. Jo

We’re told the Superbowl halftime show was a celebration of Black History Month with music generally associated with black people. So what was Eminem doing there rapping and taking a knee with no accusations of appropriation, while Awkwafina is getting all that disapproval for speaking like someone who grew up in the streets of Queens? Or worse, are Asians expected to stay in their neat boxes and live up to their stereotype image of nerds and dweebs? Perpetuating stereotypes is the ultimate hypocrisy and failure of cancel culture. ×

      1. She did not “grow up in the streets of Queens”. Have you ever even been to Queens? It’s full of East Indians, Middle Eastern people, Greeks, Blacks, Latinx people, etc…none of which talk with that concocted accent that she does not use naturally. She is making fun of BLACK PEOPLE, not YOUR PEOPLE. If we say she’s taking it and it’s insulting, she’s faking it and insulting. Notice: that “Queens accent” was missing from that commercial because that’s how she naturally talks. MIND. YOUR. BUSINESS.

      2. Donald Wood

Considering he is thenabsolute best at his game. That’s why Eminem was there! Can’t stand to. See a white man succeed! Grow up..

      3. Kevin M Sharkey

Is that what that HORRENDOUS halftime show was supposed to be? What a great way to honor Black History Month. (Sarcasm). I turned that garbage off after about a minute.

  5. Austen

Why is she being boycotted? Also, how do boycott a person? That’s some the most groups devil possessed stuff I’ve heard in a long time. Those people are awful for boycotting a person over nothing important.

    1. She’s being boycotted because she refuses to do Asian minstrel accents, but refuses to stop doing Black minstrel accents. If you’re not Black, Asian or from NYC, mind your business. Thanks.

      1. Htk

This is precisely right, there’s no defense. Her lingo is fake. She attended private and prestigious schools while growing up in “queens”.

      2. Nacho

@CFGodwell, this is a public forum for comment. Saying “mind your own business” doesn’t make sense and makes you look ignorant. Aquafina, along with many other kids who grew up in nyc have can sometimes use an accent that is considered “street” and should stop being called “blackcent,” in my opinion.

      3. Uhm.

CfG…what I don’t understand is why you think only people who are from NYC or are black or Asian are allowed to have an opinion. Huh. Bit…. odd. You tell everyone to mind their business by going around, and, well, NOT. hypocritical of you, CFG. Especially since this is a public forum. Public comment=public business. You sound incredibly ignorant

      4. Maria

Listen goldilocks, why don’t you mind your own bizniz? How is what awkwafina doing any of your bizniz? It’s her life and you ain’t a part of it so why don’t you take your own advice? Boy you so low IQ. Many actors take on accents that aren’t their own. Sidney Poitier, Oprah, the butler and Carlton on fresh prince etc. Get a life and don’t stick your brown nose in Awkwafinas or any other people’s bizniz!

      5. Nana

Non-Asians trying to do asian accent and non-black trying to do Black accent are totally different issues and cannot be compared. Black minstrel existed long time ago. It’s a history. Now when ppl try to talk black, they try to sound cool. However, when people try to talk with Asian accents, that’s to make fun of us Asians. Asian minstrel exists today. Awkmafia failed to add more explanations when she said something about it to prevent misunderstanding. She’s done nothing wrong. I’m an Asian in Black community in Brooklyn. Black people taught me English. Will I be pardoned because of my circumstances plus the fact that I went to a public school? I don’t think it’s fair if I get pardoned and she doesn’t.

  6. Duh

Coward…don’t want to make a minstrel of your own people but it’s cool to “sound” like a so called black person… So I guess it’s cool for black people to sound like an Asian individual in film…makes soooooooo much sense lol. Clowns!

    1. What kills me is people that have never set foot in NYC keep saying that she has a “Queens Accent”, when last I went to Queens, almost no one outside of the Queensbridge Houses or a mostly Black urban environment DOES NOT SPEAK THAT WAY.

      1. Lauren Jen

Clicking on your name that sends me to a merchandise page says all that needs to be said about you. Yikes. Very cringe.

    2. Kevin M Sharkey

Awkwardfina is just being a typical hypocritical Lib. She doesn’t like when Asian’s are treated badly but has no problem doing the same things to Blacks.

    3. Ricky

She said she refuses to play characters that she thinks make fun of Asian people. She uses a “street” accent because she likes it, not as an insult to black people.

  7. Mab

I enjoyed the commercial and think that she is a very talented and funny actress. I wish people wouldn’t get so caught up in every little thing. Life to short. Just be happy.

  8. Spectator

What are you talking about?? Blew up internet??? Where? You mentioned 2 tweets that nobody liked. This while thing is non sense.

  9. Lauren Jen

You know people are to privileged in america to be upset over this.

People who get mad over this need to go do mission trips in second and third world counties. It will put the world in perspective and they will be finally recognize how GRATEFUL they should be to be an American.

    1. Rick

As much as the African American community likes to cry about how much they hate being here in the United States and how poorly they are treated today not one of them wants to go over to Africa for any reason whatsoever. You will never find one of them going to a foreign country to do any type of outreach work to help anybody else.

  10. AH

Still waiting for Hilary Robert Clinton to be cancelled for her “I ain’t no ways tired…” speech making fun of us.

  11. D. Murray

This ONLY proves that ppl are petty and have way too much time on their hands.

  12. Chris Wood

If people were really going to boycott marvel/Disney then they would have done so already. As it were they are like our leaders in Washington. Making noise to make it look like they are being productive. As it stands these people protesting are the ones who go see these movies. They would never boycott something that gives their irrelevant, meaningless lives joy.

    1. Uhm.

CfG…what I don’t understand is why you think only people who are from NYC or are black or Asian are allowed to have an opinion. Huh. Bit…. odd. You tell everyone to mind their business by going around, and, well, NOT. hypocritical of you, CFG.

  13. Mike

Can’t stand her for the way she acts and talks, but I’m not going to boycott or cancel her. That’s just childish liberal B.S.!!

    1. Kevin M Sharkey

Totally agree Mike. She was the worst part of Shang Chi though.

  14. Judith De Frank

Loved the commercial and love Awkwafina

  15. Ray

Cultural appropriation? What about all those people who get tats of Asians characters(words)? Should they be canceled for cultural appropriation as well? Why no uproar when congresswoman AOC spoke with an blaccent when speaking to black people? Blacks tried to validate blaccent decades ago by saying ebonics was a language, went to vote and fell flat on its face. Blacks just can’t stand to see other poc succeed. Sounds like the Jeremy Lin scenario all over again.

  16. Theresa

People tried to cancel her just before Shang-Chi came out. It didn’t work and it won’t work again.

  17. Kevin M Sharkey

I love when “woke” hypocritical liberals turn on each other. It’s hilarious! On a side note, can this site please stop using the idiotic phrase “blew up the internet”? Makes you sound like a junior high schooler.

  18. Shel

I’m just shaking my head thinking if people would put this much energy into a real cause like inequality, racism, hunger, discrimination, etc.,… we might be able to make some change. If someone doesn’t like the way someone speaks, don’t listen to it. Don’t take it personal like Awkwafina is trying to hurt your feelings. Turn your back and don’t give it power and energy. It is insignificant in the face of real problems this country faces. She has the right to talk like she wants and we all have a choice whether we listen to her or not. There are much worse things in this world than this. Let it go…

  19. Diana

Just because the internet gives a platform to EVERYONE is no excuse for all the petty minded hatemongers to be going to off on anyone they don’t agree with. That commercial wasn’t the greatest, but maybe y’all ought to get into politics and fight for something worthwhile.

  20. Freeman

The people who are threatening to boycott/cancel are not “fans,” they never were, so Awkwafina/Disney/Marvel doesn’t need them. We had conservatives boycotting Captain Marvel/The Eternals, and now leftists (not liberals) pretending to boycott Shang-Chi. Narcissists love playing the victim.

    1. Rick

Thank you for specifying the difference between leftists and liberals. I’m a liberal but I don’t go in for this far left b*******!

  21. M

Ahhh America lol why are you all so triggered.
When Colin Farrell became famous he but on this thick inner city Dublin accent when he was from an affluent neighborhood, should we just cancel everyone?

  22. Ted

Stirring the pot are we? Funny how the far left eat their own. Whoopie, now Awkwafins. SMH.

    1. Rick

Are you even aware of the Trump feud with Governor Desantis in Florida LOL talk about eating your own LOL.

  23. Tina

I agree…don’t know what all the fuss is about. My son has often been told that his voice doesn’t match his name..(meaning) once someone heard him over the phone and he tells his name, its code for…but YOU don’t sound black or rather…you sound really white! I even had a manager say after meeting my son when he was a child, “He speaks so well…he sounds just like a little white boy!” 😳

  24. Rachel

I am black. I think we can get rid of the term “blaccent”. It sounds like 1) We all speak exactly the same and 2) we all sound like we’re from the streets. Give it a rest.

    1. Eenerzila

That is so true Rachel, and maybe the only valid issue with the term “blaccent.” I engage in life with many different people and races. If I were to speak with 99% of people over the phone before ever meeting, I would never be so ignorant as to assume their race based on their accent or lack of. That term suggest that all people in a specific race have only one voice and can be defined by their accent and way of talk. That is true ignorance and a valid point. But again, sooooo many more important, REAL, life changing issues to be upset over than this.

  25. Nacho

Agreed. Let’s stop using the term “blaccent” for what can be better described as “street.” People often use “street” accents to denote a toughness that is associated with street culture. Asian minstrel/caricatures have never been used to denote toughness.

  26. Scrimblo Bimblo

Never do Twitter. Greatest mistake of my life.

  27. Cacy1

Cancel culture has reached a level of ridiculous. It used to be a compliment to adopt words, phrases and traditions into your personal life. How can we be expected to be inclusive of others, yet segregate our traditions or vernacular. We should be sharing our differences and celebrating them. BTW It’s hip hop culture, not African American culture that Awkwafina emulates. (and, No, it’s not the same) What’s next?!?! Do we cancel all the British entertainers that are cast as American?!?!… Goodbye Cumberbatch, Hiddleston, Bale, Beckinsale, Oldman, Elba, Blunt, Hardy , Hopkins, Connery, Thompson, Neeson, Dench…..
Stop this “cultural appropriation” BS!! Cultures evolve. They do that by interaction with other cultures.
THEY ARE TRYING TO KEEP PEOPLE SEGREGATED. FIGHT IT!
FIGHT IT by showing your pride in your culture and SHARING it with others. Blend, mesh, meld, mix, mingle…. F@ck most of you woke people are anything but!! You Woke up… But you sure as hell didn’t WAKE UP.

  28. Jennifer Messina

Love her!! One of my favorite actors/comedians/rappers! She’s not racist. Anyone who says so is racist against Asians and trying to spread bs. Spread love for strong female Asian artists. Awkwafina rocks!!!!!!

  29. Willum

As a part-time internet troll, and a full-time troll in life. I can honestly tell you that CFBadturd up above is not a real person but social media advisor typing out his undivine turds to draw traffic to his overlords online market. It’s a cheap way of doing business and he/she does this so they don’t have to eat turds in real life. Thanks little demi-troll. Now go eat my turds. Your comments, like the insipid article above is a steaming pile o’ turds. While you’re at it, have a warm glass of gammy’s southern peach lemonade… (I’m talking about a sneaky wee there if ya didn’t get it.) Now go and ‘troll’ your crap Brooklyn wares elsewhere.

  30. YC

I like her she is a great actress and she is funny. Every movie she has been in has been fire! Leave her alone. Fight for the John Lewis Voters Rights Act to be passed if you guys are so concerned about our identy!

  31. Frank

Anybody want to tell that to M&M.

  32. Someguy

The crybabies of society are at it again.

    #WeNeedMoreActorsWithBlaccents

    1. RickyRRicky

Its a fake accent because Awkwafina is a made up character. If you’re saying it’s an insult because it’s not her real voice is saying Chadwick Boseman’s accent in Black Panther is an insult to African people because he’s really from South Carolina

  33. Mikki

Awkwafina is great. Hear Hear Hip Hop accent is COMPLETELY different and seperate from Black accent. I love how non Black people try to talk for us without true knowledge but claim to be woke when they are still unconscious. Wake up and learn first before you speak. Her accent is regional w/Hip Hop flare. 💗 you Girl keep being YOU

  34. Chris Q

    Tempest in a teapot.
If an ACTOR/ACTRESS PERFORMER is talking in a British or other NON-American accent, should those ethnic natives get upset ??
    It’s a JOB.
IT’S a CHARACTER. Many people have perfected a Persona to get noticed to establish a foothold for their career, and then they evolved past it.
I don’t excuse negative or hurtful stereotypes but I believe her work Persona was not mean. She’s a comedian….
    Lighten up.

  35. James Parker

Complaining about things like accents only succeeds in reducing the credibility of those who are complaining. Nobody owns an accent; that extends to groups not owning accents either.

When someone makes arguments like this, I, for one, am far less likely to take anything else they say seriously.

  36. Chris

Why didn’t we ever cancel Freddy Prinze Junior? This is just stupid though

  37. Jay

Nothing more than black supremacists whose ire was drawn when, in 2020, the Stop Asian Hate movement stole some BLM thunder and dared to “steal” the national/global spotlight from the minority group who indisputably owns the market share on racial sympathy. That group absolutely cannot stand when another minority group gets any kind of sympathy or attention. Note their lack of minority solidarity. It is only ever about their own cause. Thought leaders from their group are on record spouting anti-asian sentiment and anti-Semitism. They’d be anti-Latino/a, but that group isn’t a threat since white people don’t pretend to care about them now that Trump’s out of office.

  38. Lynna

Good God……Who cares!?! There’s more serious things to worry about people!

  39. George

WOW!! Pages and pages of crap comments about an accent. WHO CARES? She’s an actor. Much ado about nothing.

  40. EatSh!t

Majority of you commenting are retards. Oh, did I offend you by say retard?

  41. Bruce Woods

The young lady has charisma, talent and beauty… and her ACCENT … however she acquired it adds to her charm and attraction.. a MASSIVE NON ISSUE… the self stereotyping of ourselves is sad…

  42. Alishia

What is a blaccent? I am a Black woman. I find that comment out of line because how does a black person speak. We dont have proper vocabulary? I hate when someone says “you talk like you white” as if that talk is preferred. Help it make sense. Leave that woman alone. People have been doing this for decades not an eyebrow is raised. Why is she being accused of this? What is the hidden agenda? Stop with the cancelations

    1. Eenerzila

I agree Alishia, i commented earlier that this may be the only valid issue with the term “blaccent.” I engage in life with many different people and races.

  43. Eenerzila

I couldn’t agree more with all of you. There are waaaay more important things happening to be passionate or angry about, and this stupid subject certainly is not it. I like Awkwafina, find her hilarious, and it’s always the double standard. It HILARIOUS if a non-white person imitates a white person, (I’m being honest there too, not sarcastic, ) and countless other people change there accent for roles in acting, it’s called ACTING! So when you said get over ourselves, I couldn’t agree more! Thank you all for not jumping on the hate wagon. And the people that are so angry over this issue, are most likely angry and offended by just about any and everything they don’t like, support, agree with or can relate to. Just stop HATING!

    1. Binnie

You nailed it. I am still in awe that society/media have nothing else to talk about.

  44. G

Sooo Cute! Big fan of Nora.
Finally, someone from the aisian community.
    Love to you Nora

  45. Binnie

Totally agree with Jeff and the other commenters. Also, like we haven’t seen other people speak similarly like those around them, in a way. This cancel culture is getting out of hand. Next thing you know, we can’t have opinions, much less speak of them, or even live life in general. Everyone’s going to have an issue with something, regardless

  46. As a black person, who does NOT speak that way, I refuse to embrace this negative stereotypical way of speaking as blackcent. Very few of the upwardly mobile black people who raised me and those I was raised around speak in this way. Lower class ghetto people sometimes speak that way. Others who want to embrace the culture speak that way. Awkwafina can speak anyway she wants, because she is not taking anything from me or my culture by doing that. I refuse to be defined by the lowest of my color. I don’t use race because there is only one race, the human race. Skin us and we all look the same.

  47. Djdjeks

I never saw Norah Lum/Awkwafina as making fun of black people talking. I read she is from Queens and figured it was just her way of speaking, from growing up there. As far as dropping the “accent”, I’m pretty sure even black people who regularly use ebonics drop it when necessary (for job interviews, when speaking to professional personnel, etc.) so what’s the big deal when she does it for the same reason? This whole thing is stupid.

You know what? I really loved her in Shang-Chi! I think she is talented and really, people, if you are so perfect, why aren’t you in the movies or leading a company or or or … We all have lives and beliefs and hobbies. Let them alone. Just enjoy their talent. You don’t need to follow them on Social Media or wherever. Just enjoy their talent, enjoy the movie. Don’t watch the interviews if you don’t agree with what she’s saying or whatever. Seriously, People! Take care of your own lives!
