Nobody gives a rip about Encanto. It’s a boring sounding movie about house repair in a third world country. I’m not watching it. That’s why it bombed in the theaters. It grossed a tenth of Spiderman NWH even though it came out around the same time. Remember how Disney bragged about how much people streamed Soul? You don’t see them mentioning Encanto’s streaming.
You didn’t watch the movie, and don’t seem to know anything about it.
It didn’t bomb in the theaters, it actually grossed twice its budget BEFORE it made it to streaming where it has set records – and that’s despite a global pandemic that has made families with children nervous about going into enclosed spaces for hours.
It had to make about $400 million to break even and it’s only made a little over half that. It’s now back-to-back box office disappointments for Disney Animation between this and Raya.
Its production budget was about 120million. It has not made that in domestic but if you include the international ticket sales it’s at about 222 million in sales. That does not include whatever is made from streaming.
Raya between tickets and home sales made its budget.
1. Encanto had a MUCH shorter run in theaters than Spiderman and isn’t a sequel with a ready-made audience and ten times as much pre-release advertising. Therefore, your comparison is disingenuous at best, and decidedly inaccurate, as Encanto in no way “bombed” despite the deck being stacked against it.
2. Disney isn’t mentioning streaming about Encanto because of the backlash they got about Soul; in fact, Encanto’s streaming numbers are quite comparable to Soul, and possibly better.
3. If you don’t watch a movie, you don’t have the right to have an opinion about irs quality, because you are too ignorant to open your mouth about it.
4. The fact that just me alone cares about Encanto makes a lie of your claim that “nobody cares about it”–and its numbers CLEARLY indicate that I’m far from the only one.
Conclusion: you are nothing but a sour-mouthed idiot with delusions of mattering.
“sour-mouthed idiot with delusions of mattering” Nice burn. Me and the family enjoyed Encanto. I thought it was going to disappoint, but it was a delightful movie.

What does getting “triggered” mean? People are upset about the movie? So Disney shouldn’t be triggering anybody?
This reminds me of Family Guy, where Peter’s office hired a new guy to make sure people are more sensitive. The new guy announced, “Don’t anybody trigger me!” One guy raised his hand and asked, “What does trigger mean?” New Guy said, “That questioned triggered me!” and had the man cancelled and fired.

Yeah it is crazy. Being “triggered” by everything you see and hear is a personal problem. Disney didn’t put anything in there with the intent of insulting or offending anyone. And nothing in there IS offensive in itself. Anyone who is triggered by Encanto needs to get into therapy ASAP.
I just wanted to add that Surface Pressure is the best song in that film, NOT We Don’t Talk About Bruno! 😉
While I most certainly felt a kindred spirit with Mirabel, as the oldest daughter/child in my family, I cannot begin to explain just how much Surface Pressure and Luisa’s story felt representative of my life experiences. The fact that she even mentions this in the song (“Give it to your sister, your sister’s older, give her all the heavy things we can’t shoulder…And see if she can handle every family burden, watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks…no mistakes”) was what made me feel so emotionally connected to the music and to the film. I loved the animation of Luisa dancing, as well, since she has a body type we don’t often see on women and especially not one we see represented as being feminine. This movie really had something for everyone and it’s probably my favorite Disney film to have come out in many many years ☺️
I agree with you! It has the best soundtrack! I could listen to it all day. Definitely felt like Luisa was like myself. But I love the music, the beginning to the end, just a great movie! So refreshing to see a movie that doesn’t have any innuendo or anything I need to shield my kids from. We literally watch it every day. I guarantee it will be nominated and win some awards this year! I used to hate animated movies until I sat and watched some of the newer Disney movies… and I’m hooked!
I agree with this. A lot of people relate to it as a sibling but it also related to me as a mother, who has the crushing weight of making sure all practices are scheduled and we are there on time, work full time, care for your family make all the doctor appointments get them to appointments, stay on top of what’s going on in their lives, school, your health, etc. it was one of the most relatable songs to me. I also related to Maribel and Bruno, in the sense that even when you’re the one helping and being nothing more than the smiling face while everyone else has their own thing and your encouraging and loving, your the one quickest to be blamed for the flaw or outcome of things.
It was a stupid movie. The music is horrible and the storyline boring. Its become the same boringness that disney is putting out over and over. Lets get original disney! Bring a villain we can love to hate and a hero to save the movie.
“Let’s get original!” Says the moron who just described literally every Disney animated movie before Moana. Honey, you can get what you want from most of Disney’s history, but your comment here shows that you don’t know what “original” means and you have no taste in storyline or music.
Relax. you hate white people and their cultures…we get it. Maybe your people should make societies as half as successful as white ones and their people, then make your own disney and own shows lol.
First, you clearly don’t understand what “triggered” really means. It’s not something one controls; it is literally defined as being something you CAN’T control. That said, most of the people claiming they’re “triggered” clearly don’t know what it means, either, because they’re not describing being triggered, they’re describing empathizing with the characters. Which is, you know, kind of what a y storyteller WANTS and is a perfectly valid response. Just because “it’s for kids” doesn’t change that.
They arent triggered in the “ban the movie its horrible” kind of way. The movie put a lot of people in touch with their own feelings of never being good enough, being the outcast, fears of failure, etc. The movie is relatable to a ton of people which is a good thing!
Some of you did not grow up in dysfunctional families and it shows. If you can’t understand why this movie is triggering to so many people you were either fortunate and had a lovely childhood or your family didn’t expect much from you. This movie was quite original and had a very interesting plot line that has clearly touched many.
P.S you can’t claim you love Disney and then turn around and dis a movie because the main characters are darker than you. If it’s not your cup of tea then go find what is and let the rest of us enjoy a wonderful movie.
Finally someone with a brain. I could not understand from the beginning why everyone is so ok with the fact how toxic the grandmother is. she literally makes everyone in her family unhappy by expecting to be “perfect”. and in the end it’s like “oh you were the reason I was feeling not good enough for years now but you got hurt years ago by losing your husband so it’s ok.” wtf. I get it’s a movie but I constantly felt like this movie romanticize toxic family constellations. a lovely pretty family, but nobody talk about their true feelings, just don’t talk anymore about the family member that disapeared because he knew he’s the black sheep for everyone, yeah what a nice little family
Agreed about the grandmother. While I really enjoyed the movie, I feel like they copped out on the ending. How nice would it have been for the family members to just be normal and be able to decide their own paths? Also, yes it really let the grandmother off the hook because of her pain. It drove home the “hurt people hurt others” more than “take accountability for your actions”. Still, I enjoyed seeing the characters getting to open up more. Will still watch it again.
Yes was gonna add to that also, and seems like that song won’t make it even when the nominations are announced, cuz the song was never submitted to the category to begin with.
The nominations wont be announced until Feb 8 and that song isn’t even in the running for a nomination! So it’s hard to trust the integrity of insidethemagic.net or this writer.
Yeah they should have said people find it relatable. The word “triggered” has been associated with people who want to ban things they dont like. This isnt like that.
We loved Encanto! The music is great, the lush scenery wonderful and the whole family could relate to something or someone in the movie. I think “triggered” is a term that is way overused for people finding something relatable. Get some therapy and sing along to “Surface Pressure “.
For what it’s worth, I’m a middle aged woman (Mexican, born and raised in the blessed South of these United States), and I still don’t know what that movie was about! The Bruno song triggers me because it’s annoying AF!
Quit creating drama and watch the cartoon, for the love.
Me n and 6 year old love this movie…. we have watched it 8 times within the last 3 days…. she knows every song and her fave is “BRUNO”… lol. Great movie!
Bad wording in the article. People find the movie RELATABLE, not triggering. Loved the movie and I’m gld its helping people come to terms with the fears of not being good enough, failing, being an outcast, etc. And its great parents can use it to hopefully help their kids not feel the same way.
The movie actually very brilliantly shows how much family trauma can affect future generations. The movie is about a family, learning to unlearn bad traditions that were passed on. It’s a wonderful, fun, musical, movie and will go down in history as a Disney Classic. Anyones refusal to watch this movie is rooted in racism and an inability to learn and grow from media. A beautiful story that deserved to be told and an astounding cast that deserved to be seen.
Seems there are a few in the comments triggered by the music and plot…
Lin-Manuel did another amazing job with the musical numbers in this film.
The plot was a bit loose, but it flows regardless. Mirabel didn’t get powers, but she is the gift, abuela forgot that, even when she says it to all of them before the door ceremony. Mirabel ends up being the one to bring it all together. I kind of see it in a light similar to the start of CoCo, la abuela in both films starts the story by holding the main protagonist from their dreams. Miguel with music, Mirabel with her desire to fit in with the family. Though Abuela in Encanto is low key the villain in this film, as she doesn’t see she is doing harm while meaning the best of intentions, until Mirabel brings it to her attention.
In our home, we have made the assumption that Mirabel did not receive a gift (power) because during her door ceremony, after she touched the candle, she wiped her hands on her blouse before touching the door knob.
Though it could have just been that Casita, and fate determined she did not require one.
I actually thought the Casita WAS Mirabel’s gift. You only see two members of the family interact with the Casita during the movie- Abuela Alma and Mirabel. Abuela Alma does not have a magic gift- the Casita was her gift. I always thought that the Casita identified Mirabel as the best successor to Abuela Alma- the next guardian of the casita and matriarch of the family Madrigal.
Ding ding ding… you get the prize. I thought from the beginning that Mirabel’s gift was only delayed and that that gift would be to become the new matriarch. I disagree with most people’s perspective that the family was dysfunctional. Quite the opposite, hyper functional with everyone living up to the greatest expectations of their singular skill. Mirabel gave them the freedom to be more than unidimensional and to do that without guilt. The most motherly thing possible. She is the new foundation of the Madrigals family and they are stronger and better for her.
As for the movie: It was formulaic and predictable.
Not the best they have ever done but not as bad as The Princess and the Frog, but nowhere near Toy Story either.
I thought if anyone was being triggered by anything it would be the mental health aspect of Bruno’s plight.
Our five kids saw it twice in the theatre and since it came out on Disney Plus, they are obsessed with it, watching it over and over and constantly singing to the songs. I enjoyed it myself. Cute movie.
It also tells the story about Women with infertility with family and friends having children “wishing on a miracle” wile your family and friends succeed.
It’s great so many people could identify with the film. As for being a hit…it is a hit. First, in the age of COVID a hit is not what it once was. Second, Disney+ now fits in the calculus of a hit and Encanto has done well on Disney+ so this film was another hit for Disney.
I do wonder if Disney thinks like you do:
1. Failed movies are called hits by virtue of covid.
2. Disney+ will further justify all box office losses.
In the end, however, fudging the books doesn’t change the bottom line. It’s like a battered woman who wears makeup and a big smile to look normal, but in the end, she’s the one suffering all the pain.
Encanto is just a scratch compared to Disney+ when it comes to losing money.
I loved the movie it was amazing. I totally understood the family values and working in unity. I understood no one is perfect and parents try their best to assure every child is equal but as a parent my boys have different personalities and some things I take away one can care less. Therefore I have to figure something different for that particular child. You can’t raise each child the same but love them unconditionally. I was the child getting into trouble the most from my siblings BECAUSE I was misbehaving the most. However when I was following the rules my mother praised me. As I’m older we all have a great relationship
Someone is always “triggered”. The sun is out today, that literally “triggers” some people. I am definitely from a dysfunctional family, and am a Hispanic female, but did not care for Encanto at all. All of these movies that use the Hispanic culture as a theme, kind of run together. The other one that was released on Disney+ was somehow even worse. The last Disney movie I personally enjoyed was the live action Beauty and the Beast. My kids were so lost and bored in Soul, and did something else. I kind of was too. I understand what they were getting at, but it wasn’t delivered right. I was looking forward to that one too. The one with the elves wasn’t bad, but I can’t even remember the title. Frozen 2 was meh. Raya and the Last Dragon was meh. My kids did sit through and like Luca. It was ok, but it was literally the same exact story line as Call me by Your Name in Disney format. That was a good movie, but I couldn’t take Luca seriously. Using a minority group as a theme, with some sort of half ass story going on isn’t working Disney. Develop an actual good story, instead of attempting to rapidly appease current society.
You have to remember Pixar doesn’t only make kids movies… some of their movies, although made relatable for children, are actually much more written for adults. Soul, Wall-e, Up… those three definitely were made family friendly but the content and story line was very obviously made for adults.
Very true, which is why I really wanted to see it. I guess adult me wanted more explanation, and clarity, but I think so does everyone on earth with this topic. I get it though. They can’t go into too much detail, because the great beyond can rub elbows with religion. You would never stop hearing about that.
While most of us identify with Mirabel and her plight, she’s about the only likable character, along with Bruno. (And I can see why the storyline would bother some audience members. I’ve experienced the situations of people who have been mistreated and abused by their families, and it’s not the Disney happy ending in the movie.)
The music really isn’t that memorable. “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” was about it and it wasn’t a great song. (Moana, Frozen, and Tangled all have fantastic soundtracks.) This might be the film’s biggest sin.
It does get a bit slow in spots, and is a tad too long, but I’ve seen worse. It’s an okay movie.
I see there are people who love it, people who hate it, and that’s okay. Not everyone has to agree all the time.
I wanted to like it, I just didn’t connect with it beyond the gorgeous visuals and Mirabel’s plight. It didn’t make me laugh, it didn’t make me cry, it didn’t make me want to sing along, I just sat there with a “eh…” about the whole thing.
Encanto is a beautiful movie that plays on the idiosincrisies of Latin families. I can see where non-Latinx viewers may be challenged. But take it from a native, the movie nailed it. Try watching it with a new perspective and you will truly be enchanted with the Latin culture. Encanto lived up to its name as a movie that was full of character “es pura encantadora.”
I have to say that the word triggered was probably misused based on all the comments. Being triggered is usually followed by an negative response. A rape victim might be triggered by the smell of a man’s cologne and the response is hide or scream. When a person learns what triggers them they can then change the negative response. This movie seems to have inspired people to think about their lives. I haven’t read any negative responses in the comments. Triggered is probably not the correct word.
To me, the term, “triggered” has been used in a negative reference so I can see how some would respond in that way to this post. Maybe something along the lines of “emotionally connected” might have been a better term to use. As for the movie itself, I too felt connected to parts of it due to the memories that returned regarding my childhood and teen years so yes, I took was impacted by the film.
Absolutely NO ONE on here undestands the point of the movie!!! The whole point of the movie is that grandmother makes her family use their gifts to help everyone else in the town to make HER look good!! She’s got a massive ego and that’s why Maribel is looked down on because she can’t do anything. Louisa (the strong one) HATES being strong because grandmother demands she “burden’ everything for everyone in the family and town. The flower girl isn’t allowed to make ugly things (why do you think she got excited when she made a cactus?) Grandmother told Bruno to basically leave because she didn’t want to hear his predictions about the future of the family because it went against HER beliefs. It was all about grandmother. SHE set up the marriage, SHE made them do things and no one had the guts to say antyhing until Maribel did and then grandmother saw what happened. It was all about grandmothers need to be seen as important. But, again, no one watched the movie and got any of that because none of that was even discussed. Even my 2nd grade class got the whole underlying point.
Honestly, I think you’ve tripped at the finish line on this. I agree with you up to a point about Abuela… but none of that was for her ego. At least I don’t see it that way. What I see in Abuela is a woman who was traumatized as a young new mother by seeing her husband sacrifice himself for the survival of the family. The Gift, the Magic, the Encanto was FOR the family, for the children and for their future. I believe Abuela instead saw it as for her husband’s sacrifice. Therefore pushing that perfection and that “pay it forward” mentality because by doing so she believed she was honoring her husband Pedro’s memory and being “worthy” of the blessing given to them. Every time Abuela said “make your family proud” what I felt she was really saying was “make your grandfather proud. Make his sacrifice worth it”. But the thing with gifts and blessings is that they are meant to be given freely with no expectation of something in return. You don’t earn a gift, you simply receive it. Mirabel showed Abuela that the blessing was not in the Gifts, but in the survival of the family. The family is the blessing that her husband Pedro gave them, not the magical gifts. That’s why it’s so relatable for so many people and a feeling that you “owe” older generations of the family and that enforced feeling of being indebted to them. My husband’s grandmother does this sometimes. She moved to the US during WWII as a 17 year old who married an American soldier. She didn’t even speak English when she was left to live with his parents when he had to go back overseas and she had their first baby. Her life was hard… but she absolutely sometimes uses that as a guilt on her kids and grandkids for what they “owe” her for what she went through. I think that is the common family issue Encanto was exploring.
I’m hispanic. Coco’s story was much better. Encanto’s music was better than Coco. Calling that huge mansion “casita” is very tone deaf towards the poverty in latin america. “Madrigals” is wrong… should be “Madrigales”. Encanto is a very common name for farms and rich people’s properties but a certain Finca El Encanto is a ranch associated with the homicide of dozens of women. Any competent consultant would have known these things. Would have preferred an actual evil thing they overcome, not just their inner family issues. A solid 6/10 from me.

RP
Agreed about the grandmother. While I really enjoyed the movie, I feel like they copped out on the ending. How nice would it have been for the family members to just be normal and be able to decide their own paths? Also, yes it really let the grandmother off the hook because of her pain. It drove home the “hurt people hurt others” more than “take accountability for your actions”. Still, I enjoyed seeing the characters getting to open up more. Will still watch it again.

Encanto isn’t Oscar nominated because the nominations haven’t even come out yet!
Halena
I was going to write the same exact thing.
Fact checking
Yes was gonna add to that also, and seems like that song won’t make it even when the nominations are announced, cuz the song was never submitted to the category to begin with.
Eric
The nominations wont be announced until Feb 8 and that song isn’t even in the running for a nomination! So it’s hard to trust the integrity of insidethemagic.net or this writer.
Mariah
This is a blatant misuse of the word “triggered”. 🤦🏻♀️
Kitten7382
Yeah they should have said people find it relatable. The word “triggered” has been associated with people who want to ban things they dont like. This isnt like that.
BlueMom64
We loved Encanto! The music is great, the lush scenery wonderful and the whole family could relate to something or someone in the movie. I think “triggered” is a term that is way overused for people finding something relatable. Get some therapy and sing along to “Surface Pressure “.
Loretta
For what it’s worth, I’m a middle aged woman (Mexican, born and raised in the blessed South of these United States), and I still don’t know what that movie was about! The Bruno song triggers me because it’s annoying AF!
Quit creating drama and watch the cartoon, for the love.
Zoey's mom
Me n and 6 year old love this movie…. we have watched it 8 times within the last 3 days…. she knows every song and her fave is “BRUNO”… lol. Great movie!
Kitten7382
Bad wording in the article. People find the movie RELATABLE, not triggering. Loved the movie and I’m gld its helping people come to terms with the fears of not being good enough, failing, being an outcast, etc. And its great parents can use it to hopefully help their kids not feel the same way.
Bob BoOgie
It was an ok movie with not so great music. Disney tries too hard to trigger people.
melanie
The movie actually very brilliantly shows how much family trauma can affect future generations. The movie is about a family, learning to unlearn bad traditions that were passed on. It’s a wonderful, fun, musical, movie and will go down in history as a Disney Classic. Anyones refusal to watch this movie is rooted in racism and an inability to learn and grow from media. A beautiful story that deserved to be told and an astounding cast that deserved to be seen.
George
George
In our home, we have made the assumption that Mirabel did not receive a gift (power) because during her door ceremony, after she touched the candle, she wiped her hands on her blouse before touching the door knob.
Though it could have just been that Casita, and fate determined she did not require one.
Cia
I actually thought the Casita WAS Mirabel’s gift. You only see two members of the family interact with the Casita during the movie- Abuela Alma and Mirabel. Abuela Alma does not have a magic gift- the Casita was her gift. I always thought that the Casita identified Mirabel as the best successor to Abuela Alma- the next guardian of the casita and matriarch of the family Madrigal.
Alan
Ding ding ding… you get the prize. I thought from the beginning that Mirabel’s gift was only delayed and that that gift would be to become the new matriarch. I disagree with most people’s perspective that the family was dysfunctional. Quite the opposite, hyper functional with everyone living up to the greatest expectations of their singular skill. Mirabel gave them the freedom to be more than unidimensional and to do that without guilt. The most motherly thing possible. She is the new foundation of the Madrigals family and they are stronger and better for her.
Charles Urrea
As for the movie: It was formulaic and predictable.
Not the best they have ever done but not as bad as The Princess and the Frog, but nowhere near Toy Story either.
I thought if anyone was being triggered by anything it would be the mental health aspect of Bruno’s plight.
Gino Hoffmann
Our five kids saw it twice in the theatre and since it came out on Disney Plus, they are obsessed with it, watching it over and over and constantly singing to the songs. I enjoyed it myself. Cute movie.
Andrea
It also tells the story about Women with infertility with family and friends having children “wishing on a miracle” wile your family and friends succeed.
Michelle Ballard
Just going to point out that you are legitimately using the word triggered so you don’t need the quotation marks.
People have feelings too.
Is anyone trying to hit up Chicken Guy at disney springs?
Stephen
It’s great so many people could identify with the film. As for being a hit…it is a hit. First, in the age of COVID a hit is not what it once was. Second, Disney+ now fits in the calculus of a hit and Encanto has done well on Disney+ so this film was another hit for Disney.
I love Disney
I do wonder if Disney thinks like you do:
1. Failed movies are called hits by virtue of covid.
2. Disney+ will further justify all box office losses.
In the end, however, fudging the books doesn’t change the bottom line. It’s like a battered woman who wears makeup and a big smile to look normal, but in the end, she’s the one suffering all the pain.
Encanto is just a scratch compared to Disney+ when it comes to losing money.
Manny
Are reading the same Quarterly statements or are on crack? Disney+ actually made up for the losses in the parks.
Crystal

Cia
You have to remember Pixar doesn’t only make kids movies… some of their movies, although made relatable for children, are actually much more written for adults. Soul, Wall-e, Up… those three definitely were made family friendly but the content and story line was very obviously made for adults.
On that note my 3 year old loves Soul lol
Bxmamipr
Very true, which is why I really wanted to see it. I guess adult me wanted more explanation, and clarity, but I think so does everyone on earth with this topic. I get it though. They can’t go into too much detail, because the great beyond can rub elbows with religion. You would never stop hearing about that.
Autobot032
I personally did not care for the movie.
Visually stunning… Breathtaking, really.
I Lover Disney and Latinx
Encanto is a beautiful movie that plays on the idiosincrisies of Latin families. I can see where non-Latinx viewers may be challenged. But take it from a native, the movie nailed it. Try watching it with a new perspective and you will truly be enchanted with the Latin culture. Encanto lived up to its name as a movie that was full of character “es pura encantadora.”
jo
I have to say that the word triggered was probably misused based on all the comments. Being triggered is usually followed by an negative response. A rape victim might be triggered by the smell of a man’s cologne and the response is hide or scream. When a person learns what triggers them they can then change the negative response. This movie seems to have inspired people to think about their lives. I haven’t read any negative responses in the comments. Triggered is probably not the correct word.
Priscilla
We thought it was great!!!
The plot and the music.
By the end of it we were dancing around our living room.
Dean
To me, the term, “triggered” has been used in a negative reference so I can see how some would respond in that way to this post. Maybe something along the lines of “emotionally connected” might have been a better term to use. As for the movie itself, I too felt connected to parts of it due to the memories that returned regarding my childhood and teen years so yes, I took was impacted by the film.
Pablo
Where’s the cameo for Pablo Escobar????
James
IT’S THE BEST MOVIE EVER. THE REASON YOU DON’T LIKE IT IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO SENSE IN GOOD MOVIES LOL

Cia
Chris
So stupid….people are triggered by everything these days. Grow up!
Wayne
Oscar nominated? Nominations haven’t been announced and this song wasn’t submitted.
SurfacePressure
I’m hispanic. Coco’s story was much better. Encanto’s music was better than Coco. Calling that huge mansion “casita” is very tone deaf towards the poverty in latin america. “Madrigals” is wrong… should be “Madrigales”. Encanto is a very common name for farms and rich people’s properties but a certain Finca El Encanto is a ranch associated with the homicide of dozens of women. Any competent consultant would have known these things. Would have preferred an actual evil thing they overcome, not just their inner family issues. A solid 6/10 from me.
James
Trigged, lmfao. Toughen up buttercups. If an animated movie “trigged” you, go find help. What a society of whiney losers this world has become.
Disney bro
Disney has been progressive for the longest time, even before it was “in” how bizarre that conservitards get triggered so easily.
Rrrjhtw
Louisa sucked way too manl uh body like wtf
Soulover
Encanto was a boring movie. I thought it will have its own storyline… but actually it’s a RIPOFF of COCO.
