Why are people so sensitive. Yes if you had to do that 1940’s charley chan accent is one thing. But if you’re from a certain area you speak with that “accent”. Like if you grew up in the south or other parts of the country. Knew a DJ on a black raido station who everyone thought was black but was Japanese. Duh!
I am so sad that Akwafina is being targeted. She grew up in Flushing and is a product of a truly wonderful aspect of American culture—our cultural melding. I don’t want to live in a world where proud women like Akwafina are told that she acts “too black” when she is being herself.
Love her music, and her acting skills. I hope she keeps being unapologetically herself!
Looking forward to Shang-Chi, I just hope they don’t sanitize the actors too much in an attempt to speak to an increasingly politically focused trajectory by Marvel as a brand. They picked an incredible cast, and I hope they’re allowed to shine!
