24 of the attractions are outdoors so if there is lightning within a certain distance they have to close for safety.
I live north of Disney World in metro Orlando and we did have our typical short thunderstorm go through so maybe that is why 24 of them closed.
Also lightning strikes can cause power surges which may cause them to unload guests and reset rides causing short closures.

The person who wrote this article should be forced to ride Astro Orbiter all day while there is lightning in the area.

If all of these rides had to be evaced yesterday due to technical difficulties… and the people in the lines were asked to turn around and try again later… Then yes, that would be a bad thing. But I really doubt that’s what happened.
But if it was the editor’s goal to get people to stop what they were doing and click on this link, then…
    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

We were at Disney yesterday. Lots of rain and lightning caused virtually all of the outdoor rides at Magic Kingdom (and I assume all of the other parks) to close late in the afternoon. Many did reopen eventually after the storms cleared out.

This article was so hard to read. Did anyone proof it before it was published? It makes me doubt the validity of this website.

    1. Dude

THANK YOU! I just left a comment saying the same thing.
This was written by a bot or someone who needs to repeat high school English class.

      1. Tim

Horribly written article! Impossible to follow. Don’t you proof read?

      2. Pvlp

Not acceptable at the ticket prices!

  4. WILLIAM MARTIN

Yes there was hacking going on Disney boy a att etc

  5. Bob

With that many attractions closed in the MK did Disney refund the ticket price?

    1. Nick

Why would they? Most of what closed did so for weather related reasons and then reopened.

  6. Bill

It rained in Orlando yesterday…. duration attractions close in the rain.

  7. Fred

Dam my alot of my favorites were on the list if I paid in that kind of money and come to find out I couldn’t ride the rides I wanted a ride I would be pissed weather is probably somewhere I imagine where you can find out what clothes ahead of time so you don’t go out there wasted trip and waste money cuz that would suck and I would definitely make me not want to go back to Disney ever again

  8. Fred

If I spent all that money and found out that the rides I wanted to go on weren’t open I would be ticked and that would be the last time Disney ever saw me but I’m sure that there’s somewhere you can look ahead of time to see what’s open and what isn’t so you don’t waste time and money

    1. RedHead0186

Yes, Disney lists planned closures/refurbishments on their website and app. But that doesn’t help with last-minute closures if the ride breaks down or there’s bad weather. There’s no way to know that ahead of time.

      1. Kari Mylo

Wow how horrible this article is. Of course it was weather. Must be a conservative. Only ones to get so bent over easily explained issues.

        1. Iit

          Sounds like a liberal

  9. Dude

Jesus, did a bot write this article? The first several paragraphs are disjointed and borderline broken English. The sentence structure is a awkward at best.
This reads like an essay a high schooler would write who is trying to pad out the word count.

I get that bad weather causes attractions to temporarily close but with the new system of park management with having to pre book park entrances. If rides do go down and you do happen to miss out, its not as easy to come back and get the chance again, which could lead to disappointment, especially those who have paid alot to travel for holidays.

  11. Lori

I agree that this was very poorly written and should have been proof read to be sure it made sense!!

  12. Faith

There was a long thunder storm yesterday. A lot of these attractions are outside. The lighting was right over the parks. If you are going to write an article about ride closures, make it accurately reflect what occurred on that given day!!

  13. Brad

We were there that day. The attractions close due to lightning and weather. Most opened pretty quickly after.

  14. Meg

Add the possibility of being short staffed in the maintenance department (like the rest of the world) to that storm delay. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these inside rides were out longer than expected because of that. Especially if they use the frequently scheduled preventative maintenance as teaching opportunities for new cast members.

  15. Frank

Disney World, especially the Magic Kingdom, is DONE.
    The staff is rude.
The “magic” is long gone – the maintenance on the equipment and structures is [eye]sorely lacking. Instead of using its billions and billions of dollars to expand its footprints with areas of shelter and nice scenery or rides over the last couple of decades, guests have to put up with security stopping them from entering restaurants and getting kicked out of any little nook of shelter they can find in the pouring rain as if they’re loitering rather than paying $100+/day to be there. It’ll take a long time for the public to come to grips with it but you could’ve put a fork in it long ago because it’s a microwave dinner that’s been done for a very long time.

    1. Nick

Demand and attendance numbers disagree with you about the MK being “done”.
You’re also incorrect in asserting that WDW hasn’t “expand(ed) its footprints with areas of shelter and nice scenery or rides over the last couple of decades”. They’ve added all of those things as well as infrastructure to make navigation round the property less cumbersome.
But if you think the place sucks and/or isn’t worth the admission price the easy fix for you is to simply not go.

      1. Frank

Ah, yes. The huge attendance numbers make it much more enjoyable than it used to be in the 70’s and 80’s, before half the world’s population was there every day. However, I was there this past Monday because my daughter wanted to go to MK for her birthday and, funny enough, I didn’t see one additional area of shelter. I did see a number of closed areas, security guards in front of restaurants, and was told by staff on no less than three occasions that day, rather rudely I might add, that I couldn’t stand in one place or another, as if a stampede of trauma nurses were expected to rescue a patient and couldn’t squeeze between the 8 ft openings available. Like I said, it’ll take a long time for most people to accept it, but the “magic” is long gone.

    2. Jim

Odd comments not based in reality.

    3. YF

You are so right Magic Kingdom SUCKS!!!

  16. Stacey Theron

They should also learn how to construct a sentence properly.

  17. Jim

I really suspect articles like this. It seems its purpose was to create dissent. Had no one who was in the area not commented on the weather, I would not have known what caused the temporary closures. I do not recall that in the article. We have to read news these day critically because agendas often get in the way of just stating the news.

    1. Elissa B Hom

So, so true – and it is tiresome, frustrating and discouraging.

  18. Clem

Ok, so there was some severe weather, and as a result of that some attractions closed and then reopened. later Sounds like summer in Orlando.

  19. CB

Most of these attractions are out doors and as someone who works at an outdoor attraction at universal almost everyday we have to closedown for a period time because of lightning being within 5 miles

  20. DAMON

Most of the time it’s because a guest did something stupid

  21. Donna Visco

I have given up on Disney! They are rude, expensive, the magic is gone and maintence is horrid. I will never go back. Plus the place lookes like WallE everyone on a scooter making true handicapped people incapable getting on rides.

  22. Ceez

Such a silly article. Yes they close attractions because of lightning safety. Did you think of researching that first? It is quite clear to park attendees why the rides are closed while it’s happening. Making it sound like Disney just closes rides on people for fun. lol

  23. I have been going going to Disney since it opened. I live here. I love going. I have always been treated kindly. The lines may have been long from time to time but the staff was out there right along with us and i never met any one not friendly.

  24. Jen K

We were at the MK within the last 2 weeks and there was a total of 13 rides down at once. Some due to the weather others for maintenance. It really left a limited number of rides available.
