In 2001, Christopher Paolini self-published his first novel, Eragon. While only known to a few at the time, the novel was picked up by another author who thought it deserved to be republished by an actual publishing company.

In 2003, Eragon was republished by a division of Penguin Random House and the book was an immediate hit. The original book went on to become the first in a series named The Inheritance Cycle.

The book was so successful that, in 2006, a film adaptation of the successful novel was released by 20th Century Fox. Unfortunately, the film did not have the success of the novel and was a total flop. Despite having powerhouse actors, including Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich Robert Carlyle, and Rachel Weisz, the film only has a 16% Critics Score and a 46% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, it appears that Eragon fans are not ready to let the beloved book series have only one terrible film adaptation to represent it. Fans are hoping now that The Walt Disney Company owns the rights to the material — since it bought 20th Century Fox in 2019 — they will remake the film and release it either in theaters or on Disney’s streaming service, Disney+.

For those unfamiliar with the book and subsequent film, Eragon tells the story of a young man, named Eragon, who discovers a dragon egg. When the dragon hatches, Eragon sets forth to restore the legacy of the land’s Dragon Riders and, hopefully, overthrow the evil Monarch who has taken over the land of Alagaesia, where Eragon lives.

Fans have been so insistent that the film gets a Disney remake that they actually had #EragonRemake trending on Twitter. User P1K: One Year Married (@Dylan1Kenobi) made sure to tell Disney that they would be missing out if they didn’t remake the film.

Apparently I missed the tweet storm but better late than never! @Disney you’re sitting on an absolutely AMAZING property in Eragon! It absolutely needs it’s own series on @DisneyPlus!! #EragonRemake

Logar3 (@Logar49015351) also threw their support in for a Disney remake because the franchise is their favorite.

Just to show my support to my favourite series of all time, here’s my #EragonRemake tweet!

A proper adaption of the books would make an absolutely killing. Eragon is such a good series and I hope it gets the love it deserves!

The social media boom for the remake was an unexpected one that even took the book’s author, Christopher Paolini, by surprise. Paolini chimed in on Twitter to voice his support for the film as well.

Bring the thunder Alagaësians! Let @Disney hear you roar! Use the hashtag #EragonRemake, mention @Disney in the body of the tweet, and let them know we want to see a proper Eragon adaptation!

Paolini continued to Tweet and Retweet throughout the day to show his surprise and appreciation as #EragonRemake continued to trend.

Huge, huge thanks to everyone participating in the #EragonRemake tweetstorm. Can’t tell you what it means to me and the rest of the fandom. Your enthusiasm today has totally blown me away. Atra esterní ono thelduin! @Disney

With the success that Disney films and series are having, it is not surprising that fans think the book series would do well on the streaming platform, should Disney grant their wish and make a series. At this time, Disney has not responded to the tweets, but never say never when it comes to potential Disney projects.

The original 2006 film is currently available to stream on Disney+, so you can decide for yourself whether the film is a success or could definitely use a Disney do-over.
