Those of us who are fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know that behind every great performance or story, there are about a dozen people behind-the-scenes who help us see the result.
Jimmy Rich, also known as Robert Downey Jr.’s personal assistant, was one of those people.
Rich passed away on Wednesday following a fatal car accident. Downey shared the news on Instagram on Thursday, writing a tribute to the person he called his “right-hand man”.
This is not news. This is a terrible and shocking tragedy. Jimmy Rich was in a fatal car accident at approx. 8pm yesterday. He was a brother, my right hand man, an uncle to our kids and beloved by all who experienced his singular character and wit.. our thoughts go to his relatives, friends, co-workers, and all the fans who knew him as the man who supported every step of my recovery, life and career.. Again, my condolences to his beautiful family, and the legacy of hope and redemption his life will continue to represent.
Peace Be Unto You.

Longtime Avengers co-stars Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Pratt, and Josh Brolin commented on the post leaving their condolences, along with stars like Ryan Reynolds and Jack Black.
If you’re a fan of Robert Downey Jr., you were probably aware of Rich’s incredible influence in his life through the many times he talked about him in press interviews or at junkets. And if you’re not a fan, you still probably noticed that most of the content that Downey posted when it came to events or even personal photos were taken by Rich, who was pretty much always along for the ride whether it was a premiere or a vacation.
Having been a part of Downey’s life through his start as Iron Man and as a constant partner in his sobriety, Rich was a valuable part of not just Downey’s life but the entire Downey team. His sudden loss feels like a huge hole in the Marvel Universe we’ve come to know.
Marvel Studios also paid tribute to Rich, who was a constant presence behind the scenes, with a tweet of their own acknowledging the man who was always behind-the-scenes but maybe never known by the general public.
Rest In Peace, Jimmy. You have been such a great friend to all of us at Marvel Studios for so many years. Your love and light were an inspiration to everyone that knew you. We will miss you. pic.twitter.com/O45mKJA1gj
