I love the Matterhorn! Though its great as it is, I am not opposed to reimaging it with a Frozen theme just as long as it doesn’t go away. Over the decades Disney has removed a few of the staples I grew up with and if this one goes the way of those my family will definitely be devastated! Refurbish possible retheme just don’t get rid of it!!!

We are the consummate Disney family, visiting at least twice a year. We even bought a time share there just to have a place for our entire extended family to stay with us so we can all visit the parks together. Sadly, we’re going to have to sell our $4000.00 of remaining tickets and say goodbye to the timeshare as the whole ridiculous BLM/ Woke movement is rapidly destroying what Walt took literally a lifetime to imagine and build. We, the conservative Christian family have been the 80+% Disney fan base and glue that has perpetuated the success and business of Disney World We’re literally sick to the point of vomiting at what you millenial reimagineeers are doing to what Walt created for the Good and enjoyment of good people and have successfully destroyed the entire reason and legacy that that wonderful pioneer had created. We’ve created the best memories that our family had ever known in your formerly beautiful parks and water parks and always stayed until closing. You’ve betrayed your founder, pioneer, and probably the world’s greatest imagineer ever and destroyed a legacy that took his and your other founders lifetime’s to shape and implement. Goodbye dear friends. Your memory will live forever, but so too will the disgust of your destruction at the hands of these young “criminals.”

Song let the door hit you in the ass on the way out

Please don’t change it! The Matterhorn is definitely a very beloved Disney Classic! We have lost too many of the great classics! Please keep it as close to original as possible! So many beautiful memories!

      2. Cyr

        Make that – don’t.

We can’t turn back back the clock and pretend we are unaware of how people are treated or represented in media and theme parks. Christians are supposed follow Christ who died to provide the way to heaven for sinful mankind. If you think the way people of color were not treated sinfully, then you aren’t paying attention, or worse. We won’t miss you.

        1. Robert

IT IS SAD that Disney along with many other companies are continually worried about offending people. If it ain’t broke, dont fix/change it. And I’m tired of hearing how racism is connected with people of color. If you look at history, every race at one point in this existing world has been treated wrongfully for its origin. Hebrews, Jews, White Europeans (300 years), African American, Anerican Indians, etc……..let’s focus on the good and enjoy the great things people have done to make this a happier place. Walt must be looking down shaking his head… e joy life people, stop being offended by every little thing. (Written by a Mexican American)

calling blm ridiculous is a sure sign you are a racist.

BLM is a terrorist organization. We all saw the rioting and burning of innocent businesses.

What passes for Christian among conservatives these days doesn’t seem to have much to do with what Jesus taught.

      7. Ha

You are not alone in your opinions. Many people feel the same way as you. The woke and cancel cultures are anti-God, anti-tolerance, anti-love, anti-acceptance, anti-unity, anti-American. The world is going to hell in a handbasket, thanks to the left.

      8. Max

Ummm, what does this have to do with the Matterhorn refurbishment? Nobody cares about how you choose to spend your money or your cult or your racist viewpoint.

      9. R

Good riddance! Disney doesn’t need you and your racist family.

      10. MF

I had heard Walt was anti Semitic and a bit racist.

      11. Alco385

Amen. I agree completely. Walt would not approve of what his unworthy descendants have done to his brilliant vision.

Meanwhile, if all you miss is the track layout, just go to Disney World and ride their space mountain, same layout.

    1. Mark Fluharty

What planet did you come out of Disneyland’s Matterhorn is a totally different layout than space mountain and magic Kingdom in Florida. Yes there might be similarities but they’re way different I’ve seen people that have actually did the track layout blueprints and overlay them and there is nothing the same.

My return to D-land in late June will be bittersweet, since my favorite coaster will be down. I plan to visit later this summer when it hopefully comes back. Why they couldn’t have started this massive refurb earlier I can’t understand. And as for putting in “Frozen”— no. Not everything has to be about IP and we’ll be going too fast to see much anyway. And we practically just got the awesome new yeti. Please please do what you must and reopen our Matterhorn because we really miss it.

  4. Lynn

The Matterhorn, as with Sleeping Beauty’s Castle are the legacy (to use a word they like) attractions at the Park. The Matterhorn in particular was groundbreaking.
Anything that significantly changes the character of these landmarks would be a grave mistake.

  5. Corinne Walker

I DON’T WANT. MATTERHORN TO BE CHANGED TO FROXEN. NO!! That’s already happening to SLASH MOUTIAN / Thiana and the Louisiana Frog!! Don’t ruin Matterhorn too. Plese leave Disneyland intact, and let us enjoy the magic just like it is.

    1. Traci

Nobody said they are changing Matterhorn. Read the article again

  6. Cookie

I stopped riding the Matterhorn, because it literally beat me to death! If they could re-imagine it with a bit of a smoother ride, I’d be in line in a heartbeat. But when a ride makes you sore, you know it’s time to give it up.

    1. James

Agreed about a smoother ride track. As someone with arthritis I feel like I’ve fallen down three flights of stairs at the end of the ride. I’ll still go back as I love the Matterhorn but it tougher every year.

    2. Sarah

Same. I had bruises all over me the next day and a hurt back. It was actually painful!

  7. Kevin

An article titled “what’s happening with the matterhorn” should include actual information on what’s happening with the matterhorn. But this one doesn’t. Maybe change the title to “we don’t know what’s happening with the matterhorn” or why or when it’s reopening, but we wish we knew because we’d tell you if we did but we don’t.

  8. Jean

As iconic as the Matterhorn is, it is one of the most uncomfortable rides in the park. It’s super shaky/jittery (i.e. not smooth) and you feel a bit tossed around like a rag doll. New tracks to smooth out the ride and new cars where you don’t have to straddle another person would be great updates. As for the Frozen update, I vote a big NO!

    1. Jennifer Picetti

I’m wondering why this couldn’t have taken place during the 14 month closure? In any case, what I would vote for and would LOVE to see happen is the ride stays as currently themed but the tracks get updated. The ride is so jerky it hurts your back and neck and prevents it from the feeling of a smoother coaster like Thunder Mountain or Space Mountain. I would also love a little more of the “snow” on the outside of the mountain, for whatever reason when the refurbished the ride in 2015 they took the majority of that with it and as a result I don’t think it looks as good, Walt’s version looked better! ❤❄🏔

  9. Bort

I think it’s time to retire this ride. It’s old and not very fun for me and my family.
Frozen retheme would be perfect! Definitely need it to be something more family friendly.

  10. Lorie

I agree they should get rid of it and make it frozen. They have had matterhorn for a long time. Time for a change up!!!

  11. ?

Make new bobsleds with 4 seats, not 6. You reduce capacity, but can improve comfort quite a bit. Also, the new Abominable Snowman doesn’t look great. Reskin him to look more like the old Snowman (Harold) and give him his old roar back.

  12. michael streuly

Disneyland sucks. The rides a way out of date. I have not been to Disneyland in a long time and will never go back. Over priced and the rides suck.

  13. KevinY

Make it smoother, make it smoother, make it smoother. I always remember it being rough as a kid in the 90’s but when I rode it in 2017 for the first time in over a decade I was flabbergasted how horrifically rough it had become. I said then and there I’M DONE riding this until there’s a significant upgrade. It’s a shame because I LOVE everything about the mountain, the sound effects, the smell, it’s all magical….just absurdly rough!

  14. ANDRE

If anything, a readjustment of theme towards SEA seems to be what is in the future for the ride. It is already being used to include Jungle Cruise and possibly the Haunted Mansion as well as being a part of the backstory of Big Thunder. It is a unifying theme for adventurous rides that don’t utilize IP characters.

  15. Bryan

It’s eventually reasonable that during the shutdown they started a very large rework that just went over schedule into the reopening. My guess is it’ll come back before the end of summer with no major changes, just assume standard refurbishment and repair.

  16. manolito magallon

    1. Wah

no one called blm ridiculous, except you

You’ve misstated the problem. You said “Due to current building codes, Disney is unable to tear down and rebuild the mountain…”

No, the problem is that BECAUSE of building codes they would HAVE to tear down and rebuild the entire mountain. Once you start to replace large sections to bring it up to code they would have to, to the best of their ability, bring the entire structure up to code, which would mean leveling it and starting over. You can haphazardly update bits and pieces, you can only maintain what is there. As much as I love the Matterhorn I would be thrilled if they levelled it and started from scratch using today’s technology.. I think they need to rip out the submarine voyage and use that plot of land to build a little swiss village with a kickass Expedition Everest style Matterhorn with an autopia style ride running around and through the bottom. It would be awesome.

    2. Hamza

I totally agree about the smoothness of the ride. It’s very uncomfortably bumpy and jerky which practically defeats the purpose of the fun. If anything about the Matterhorn Bobsleds should be refurbished it should be the smooth flow of the sled along the tracks, especially since it’s supposed to mimic a bobsled ride. Unlike Indiana Jones which is supposed to be jerky and bumpy since you’re in an off-road jeep escaping over rugged terrain; yet still enjoy the ride without feeling as if your hitting rock below your rear.

  18. Puffnatik

Agreed with the Left side being faster. The tracks were designed a bit different on both sides. The slower right side is good when you’re wanting the ride but not the rush. Get up a short 10 minute bus ride down frpm the park. Disneyland will forever be my home away from home. Sadly with the prices hikes it’s eaiser to be homeless with more and more packages, perks and stuff you used your entire life disappear.

  19. Hamza

The Matterhorn Bobsleds has always been a Disney favorite. Walt Disney himself would not want it to be rethemed and would I. I made a comment earlier about preserving the magic, and Matterhorn is part of the original Disney spirit that should not be modified. With that being said it cold be upgraded mechanically as the last time I rode it was rather bumpy and not so comfortable. Other than that, the Matterhorn is a keeper.

  20. BARBARA A ERVIN

I don’t like the retheming going on at the Disney parks. Retheming means having to either give up something you love or learn to accept it and there are just some things I can’t accept! For a lot of the retheming it’s only ‘necessary’ to retheme if someone sees it as a ride that is offensive/and or non-inclusive’! IMO the only people who can see an amusement park ride as offensive/non-inclusive are racists. It seems to me the racists of today want to get rid of ALL things THEY consider offensive and to hell with everyone else! Here’s a little advice for people who are trying so hard to make everything in life unoffensive, you can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you will never please all of the people all of the time! There will always be people who are offended over one thing or another!

  21. Patricia

I had to give up riding the Matterhorn a long time ago. I have some back problems, and for most rides I can sit or brace myself and not have any lasting effects. But on the Matterhorn, which is bumpy and jerky so it’s like riding on a real bobsled, the only thing I could do was completely hold myself up off the seat – not easy and definitely not fun. So it seems that in going for a ride that is more “real”, they made it too uncomfortable for a lot of us. I do hope they figure out a way to fix it, whether it stays the Matterhorn or becomes something else. I love seeing it and hearing it as I walk by.

For those complaining about rides being changed, I think they have forgotten that Walt envisioned Disneyland as a place that would always keep growing and changing. Think about all the changes from the first year when Disneyland opened. A lot of those happened with Walt’s vision of making the park even better.

  22. Fox

I understand the desire to update, but I hate it. DL is about charm, imagination, and magic! When they update they leave out these attributes. Leave some things alone. I’ve been going to DL my entire life and I’ve been watching them make changes for decades that don’t always compare to the original magic. It would not be the same DL with a changed Matterhorn…part of the fun is the rough ride and knowing the left side is faster! And, watching Tinker Bell fly from the top! This is also the problem with California, of which I am a native. We are always looking for new and shiny with less substance, rather than historically iconic with character. Please stop ruining the character and magic of Disneyland. It’s heartbreaking.

  23. MF

I think they are making preparations to have the gondolas 🚡 pass through it again.

  24. Janet Rhodus

I think the Matterhorn should stay as it is with a smoother ride. I also don’t understand why it couldn’t have been refurbished during the lock down but it’s too late now to worry about that. No it doesn’t need to be Frozen and people would like to see Aladdin come back to the theater instead of Frozen. Some things need to just stay the same for the sake of consistency. Everything doesn’t have to be “brought up to date”.

    1. MF

Well since imagineers need to stay employed they need to come up with ways of imagineering things. They can’t always work on new stuff. 😂

  25. Austin

I noticed that Matterhorn no longer shows in the Closed for Refurbishment list on the Disneyland calendar starting on July 2nd. Buzz also disappears from the Closed for Refurbishment list on June 26.

I am pleased that Disneyland is taking their time with the renovation of the Matterhorn and not rushing and making sure that the wait will ensure that it will be done with the best of safety concerns. I have no doubt when it re-opens it will be better than ever. Thank you Disney. 🙂
