The article is accurate with the exception of the musical grooves but there is some truth to it. The musical roadway concept was the idea of Disney marketing cast member named Tim Sprunger who proposed the idea to be placed on World Drive. The proof of concept was installed on the abandoned runway and was made of plastic strips taped to the asphalt with gaffers tape. WDW executives would drive their cars down the runway to demonstrate it. The idea was never pursued but the rumors of the musical runway spread by word of mouth
Word was, back in the day, the song was Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah.
The airstrip was also used for a while as a place for bus driver training and a place for staff parking during certain special events at MK.
When I was in high school back in the mid to late 1990s, I was on an electric vehicle competition team. We went to a large electric vehicle conference/competition held at Disney World. The various high school teams competed on that airstrip. They had a little road course with cones set up to run our electric cars through. They also had tents set up for other competitive events inside them. Our car was a 1983 Mercury Lynx that had been converted to batteries. It was a lot of fun competing on that old airstrip but it rained the entire time.
