For one, many products issued even before and around the time of release carried the name, including the novelization, Marvel comic adaptation, the soundtrack (“Parade of the Ewoks”), Kenner toys („Logray (Ewok Medicine Man)“), etc.
Also, the film does name the creatures – just not verbally. The original credits not only referred to several Ewoks by name, but also actors playing “Ewok Warrior.“
