In last week’s episode of The Mandalorian — Chapter 10 (Season 2, Episode 2) or “The Passenger” — The Child disturbed just about everyone when he ate the eggs belonging to the “Frog Lady” character.

As the story goes, “Frog Lady” (AKA the episode’s title character) had to have her very last batch of eggs fertilized by her husband — who happened to be on another planet, hospitable to their species — very quickly before her line died out.

An unfortunate set of circumstances to be sure, but Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Baby Yoda came to the rescue at Peli Motto’s (Amy Sedaris) urging — not exactly willingly, but Din stepped-up nonetheless.

The unpleasantness started when Baby Yoda thought the duo’s passenger’s eggs looked delicious and, throughout the episode, hungrily snapped them up as if they were a delectable snack.

Star Wars Fan Reaction

Fans immediately took to social media to express their distaste for the situation. Some even went so far as to create alternative theories about why The Child might have been eating the eggs.

Peter Sciretta developed this notion:

I know some of you are disturbed by Baby Yoda eating Frog Lady’s eggs. In our live chat someone posed a fun theory: her tank & eggs will be destroyed and the Child will regurgitate the eggs David Blaine-style as it turned out he wasn’t really eating them but protecting them.

Sciretta later replied to his own thread, writing:

This might be a ridiculous theory but who knows?

Some of his followers agreed with the idea that Baby Yoda was actually eating the eggs for some unknown noble cause. Jordan Wiegand Tweeted:

That’s what I was thinking too that he’s actually helping.

Lucasfilm Executive Explains

As things have played out, it’s become clear that there is no real reason for Baby Yoda eating “Frog Lady’s” eggs beyond the fact that the showrunners thought it would be amusing — albeit in a dark and twisted way.

Lucasfilm creative art manager Phil Szostak shared this on Twitter:

For the record, Chapter 10 of #TheMandalorian makes it clear that the Frog Lady’s eggs are unfertilized, like the chicken eggs many of us enjoy. But obviously, chickens aren’t sentient beings and the Child eating the eggs is intentionally disturbing, for comedic effect. #StarWars

Szostak added:

Fans of horror know that disturbing things make some of us laugh and some of us squirm, or both. Your mileage may vary.

No matter where you fall on the “Baby Yoda eating eggs is disgusting” spectrum, it seems clear that The Mandalorian’s showrunners don’t have a deep, Force-related reason The Child found his new “snack” so delicious.

He really is just a 50-year-old toddler who gets into everything.
