It turns out Castaway Club members aren’t the only ones who think Disney Cruise Line is spectacular. An environmental group thinks so, too. Friends of the Earth just released the 2019 Cruise Ship Report Card and rated Disney Cruise Line an overall grade of A-, while others got Cs and even Fs.

Friends of the Earth, an international network of organizations across 74 countries around the world, issued a Cruise Ship Report Card in which it evaluated and ranked 16 major cruise lines in terms of environmental impact, from sewage treatment and air pollution reduction to water quality compliance, transparency of information, and even criminal violations. Friends of the Earth wrote in the report card that taking a cruise has the potential to be more harmful to both the environment and personal health than any other form of travel.

“It is regrettable that Friends of the Earth and other groups continue to issue misleading and inaccurate information about the cruise industry,” Megan King, spokeswoman for Cruise Lines International Association, a cruise industry trade association, wrote to USA Today. “The measures used by the FOE are very narrow and do not tell the true story of the leadership position that the industry has taken in these areas.”

Each cruise line was graded for the specified criteria, and the grades were averaged to create the final grade for each cruise line. By what looks to be a landslide, Disney achieved the highest grade overall. Disney Cruise Line was also the only cruise line to respond to Friends of the Earth’s request for environmental data from the past two years, which went into the evaluation of transparency.

Would definitely agree with the score. We took a cruise on Royal Caribbean and it was the cruise we’ve ever taken.

Wow, that’s interesting! I never knew there was a rating system for cruises! As you can tell I’ve never been on a cruise before! But Disney Cruise line will definitely be my first when the time comes!

there was a local political group last election who sent a scorecard to candidates and “graded” them in a very obviously slanted way, and if the candidate didn’t send it back, they simply got an F, which is grossly misleading. this seems to be the same idea. now, this is not to say disney cruise line doesn’t deserve all the high ratings it gets- it most certainly does and i would be hard pressed to sail another line. but people should always take these sorts of ratings wit ha grain of salt.
