Disney Parks are known as the happiest and most magical places on Earth. But if you can’t make it to the theme parks this year or you’re looking for some Disney magic on a non-Disney vacation, there is so much you can see and do to get your fix of pixie dust. We recently came across this small town in Kansas that was the inspiration for Disney-Pixar’s hit film “Cars,” and when we saw the resemblance and magic of this town, we had to share it with you.
Galena is a small town located in the southeast corner of the state of Kansas, where the iconic Route 66 curves into the state for only a few miles. This is a town stopped in time, much like the town of Radiator Springs in the “Cars” films. From the brick buildings to the Route 66 murals, this charming place seems almost like a carbon copy of Radiator Springs. And with the subtle (and not so subtle) nods to the “Cars” characters, the town of Galena seems to appreciate the film’s adaptation of their small-town-on-Route 66 life. The “Greetings from Galena” mural depicts characters like Mater greeting passersby, and lifelike replicas of characters including Mater and even Lightning McQueen himself are on display throughout the town’s main strip. With its charming and timeless atmosphere and hints of Disney magic, Galena is a travel destination you won’t want to skip on your next road trip.
Take a look at some of the photos of Galena, KS, and the nods to the “Cars” films below:
