The 91st Academy Awards took place on Sunday, February 24 in Hollywood, and “Black Panther” was the big winner for Disney/Marvel Studios this year.
“Black Panther” took home the awards for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Score. The film also made history as the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture, though it ultimately lost to “Green Book.” Still, it’s an impressive list of wins and nominations for one of the biggest blockbusters of 2018. Another noteworthy win went to Disney-Pixar’s “Bao,” which took home the award for Best Animated Short.
Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” was nominated in several categories and was a contender for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“The Place Where Lost Things Go”). In the end, “Black Panther” won Best Original Score and “Shallow” from “A Star is Born” was the winner of Best Original Song. However, viewers were treated to Bette Midler performing “The Place Where Lost Things Go” during the ceremony, with a Mary Poppins-inspired intro from Keegan-Michael Key. Though it was distributed by Sony, the Marvel Comics-based “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” took home Best Animated Feature.
And with the Disney-Fox merger coming to a close soon, it’s also noteworthy that Fox had a good night at the Oscars. Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” took home four awards, the most wins for any film that evening, including Best Actor for Rami Malek. In addition, Olivia Colman earned Best Actress for Fox Searchlight’s “The Favourite.” Including wins for Fox Searchlight’s recently acquired “Skin” (Best Live-Action Short) and Nat Geo’s “Free Solo” (Best Feature Documentary), Disney and Fox took home a combined total of 11 awards at the 2019 Oscars. According to Deadline, Disney CEO Bob Iger shared his happiness over Disney and Fox’s wins during the Governors Ball afterparty.
