“Avengers: Infinity War” took all of our favorite heroes from the 10-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and put them in one epic, action-packed movie. The result was an incredibly successful blockbuster that still has people buzzing.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn was asked for a bit of an explanation regarding one aspect of the film’s breathtaking finish. His answer got people buzzing even more, but not in the way they hoped.

WARNING: MAJOR “AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR” SPOILERS FOLLOW!

Groot relaxes in the cockpit of a spaceship, focused on his handheld video game, channeling the playful vibe of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

Let’s set the scene first. As you (hopefully) already know, “Avengers: Infinity War” ends with Thanos snapping his fingers, causing half of all life in the universe to fade out of existence. Among those that disappear, is the teenaged Groot.

As he fades, Groot looks at Rocket Raccoon and utters one last “I am Groot.” Gunn was asked on Twitter what Groot was saying to Rocket as he was fading from existence. Gunn’s answer was heartbreaking.

One word forced Marvel fans around the world to shed tears, most of them more than a week removed from seeing the film.

Groot, a character that fans have fallen in love with over several movies and have already had to watch perish in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy,” looked to Rocket Raccoon and said “Dad,” as he faded into nothingness.

As if the Spider-Man’s “I don’t want to go” line wasn’t bad enough, the ending of “Avengers: Infinity War” is soul-crushing, and fans took to Twitter to share their pain.

If you’re still reading this through your tears, you can see how it all went down by seeing “Avengers: Infinity War” in theaters now.
