ANALYSIS – Shot-by-shot with the second trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”

in Entertainment, Movies, Movies & TV

SHOT #43 – TITLE CARD – “THIS CHRISTMAS”

SHOT #44 – The Millennium Falcon careens through a cave system (possibly on Crait), pursued by several First Order TIE Fighters.

SHOT #45 – The TIE Fighters blast away at the Falcon as it weaves its way through the cave, narrowly dodging the walls with its headlights on.

SHOT #46 – One of the more infamous shots from the new trailer. Chewbacca (looking oddly CGI, though director Rian Johnson has denied it on Twitter) roars while piloting the Falcon, then the camera pulls out to reveal an almost-certainly-CGI Porg sitting on the dashboard, who proceeds to mimic Chewie’s battle cry.

SHOT #47 – A First Order blaster bolt screams across space and impacts on a Resistance ship.

SHOT #48 – Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) peers out through the window of a Resistance transport.

VOICE-OVER # 5 – “We are the spark…” says Poe Dameron.

SHOT #49 – The main engine of a Resistance X-Wing Starfighter fires up, and the ship propels itself further into space.

VOICE-OVER (CONTINUED) – “That’ll light the fire…”

SHOT #50 – Extreme close-up on Poe Dameron’s fighter helmet, as the pilot steers his ship into battle. You can see the reflections of other ships in his visor.

SHOT #51 – Poe’s X-Wing zooms across the surface of a First Order Star Destroyer (or possibly the huge the Dreadnought warship) as a huge explosion erupts next to it.

SHOT #52 – Poe delivers his inspirational speech to the Resistance: “…that’ll bring the First Order down.” In the blurry background stands Lieutenant Connix, the character played by Carrie Fisher’s daughter Billie Lourd.

SHOT #53 – Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) readies her weapon as an explosion goes off behind her. See the character’s current Marvel Comics series for an explanation as to how Phasma survived the Starkiller Base explosion at the end of “The Force Awakens.”

SHOT #54 – Finn (John Boyega) wields a Z6 riot control baton, and stares down Phasma. Notably he is dressed as a First Order officer, a disguise which has already appeared in behind-the-scenes materials. This fight scene probably takes place inside the Dreadnought.

SHOT #55 – Finn and Phasma clash as sparks fly around them. “Come on!” Finn yells angrily.

SHOT #56 – A close-up on Phasma as she leers down as Finn through her helmet. Will we get to see Gwendoline Christie’s face in “The Last Jedi”?

SHOT #57 – More of the space battle. TIE Fighters blow up a Resistance Frigate, with the Dreadnought in the background.

SHOT #58 – The first appearance of BB-8 in this new trailer. The plucky ball-shaped droid gets fried during the space battle, but shakes it off and resumes help monitoring Poe’s X-Wing.

SHOT #59 – Luke is on the ground, seemingly defeated, leaning against a wall of rocks. Does this scene take place on Ahch-To or later in the movie? “This is not going to go…” he says sharply.

SHOT #60 – Our first good look at the new ice fox creature (of which the official name has not been released) in action on the planet Crait. Several more foxes rush past in the background, and we see what looks like the huge mechanical door of a Resistance base slowly closing.

SHOT #61 – The door continues to slowly seal itself, as Leia stares out through the closing gap. A large vessel approaches in the distance.

SHOT #62 – A close-up in the same location. Leia looks sad.

VOICE-OVER #6 – “…the way you think!” Who is Luke talking to here? Chances are it’s either Rey or Kylo Ren.

SHOT #63 – Rey dives into the water in what appears to be an underground cave.

SHOT #64 – Rey emerges from the water, looking hurried. Is this part of her training?

SHOT #65 – Luke waits for Rey, in what seems like it could be the same location as #59 and the above two. Rey’s hair is wet, so we can assume this follows the previous shot. But again, there’s no clear indication as to on which planet this takes place.

VOICE-OVER #7 – Snoke says “Fulfill…”

SHOT #66 – Finn marches down a hallway on a First Order ship, in disguise and surrounded by Stormtroopers.

SHOT #67 – An enormous hangar bay in what’s most likely the First Order Dreadnought. Flametroopers, Stormtroopers, TIE Fighter Pilots, and officers stand at attention. More AT-AT and AT-ST Walkers are visible in the background.

SHOT #68 – Another, similar shot of the assault on Crait, but at a higher angle.

VOICE-OVER (CONTINUED) – “…your…”

SHOT #69 – A First Order TIE Fighter is blasted out of the air during the battle on Crait.

SHOT #70 – Resistance Ski Speeders skitter across the terrain on Crait, as the TIE Fighter crashes to the ground and tumbles toward the camera.

SHOT #71 – Our first good look at Supreme Leader Snoke (though his face is partially obscured by his hand. He reaches out toward Rey and concludes his menacing thought from the voice-over: “…destiny.”

SHOT #72 – Rey is bent over backward in terrible pain in Snoke’s throne room, with the Supreme Leader and Praetorian Guards visible in the background.

CUT TO BLACK.

VOICE-OVER #8 – Rey says “I need someone…”

SHOT #73 – Rey is speaking to an unknown listener, “…to show me my place in all this.”

SHOT #74 – It is revealed that Rey is talking to Kylo Ren. Odds are we’ll find out what the special hidden relationship is between these characters (if there indeed is one) in this scene.

SHOT #75 – In the final live-action shot of the trailer, Kylo Ren reaches out his hand to Rey, offering his guidance. Will she take it?

SHOT #76 – TITLE CARD – “STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI”

SHOT #77 – TITLE CARD – “DECEMBER 15” – Yes, including the four title cards, there are a grand total of exactly seventy-seven (77) shots in this trailer. I can’t help but feel like that could be intentional, considering the significance that number holds in “Star Wars” history, and the anniversary year during which “The Last Jedi” is being released.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will be released into theaters nationwide on Friday, December 15th. As indicated by the title card above, tickets are now on sale.
