A lively crowd strolls past a striking portrait of a woman displayed on a vibrant blue wall, their swift movements creating ghostly blurs similar to the excitement in themed entertainment spaces. The energetic scene feels like the immersive experiences at top U.S. attractions, reminiscent of special museum days when free admission draws eager guests to explore inspiring art—much like family festivals or exclusive theme park events that welcome new fans into magical worlds.

On Saturday, September 23, the Smithsonian Institution is giving people the chance to visit some of the best museums around the country for free.

“Smithsonian” magazine’s annual Museum Day Live event takes place this weekend with more than 1,200 museums participating. To find a participating museum or gallery in your area, search by state or zip code on the Museum Day Live website. Once you’ve chosen a museum, fill out the online form here. Two free tickets will then be available to download on the website and sent to your inbox.

Some museums allow mobile tickets but others require a hard copy, so be sure to check the restrictions before heading out for your visit.

Smithsonian Museum Day Live! brings the excitement of free admission to guests on Saturday, 9/23/2017, letting families and friends explore participating museums across the U.S.—just like a special day of free entry at your favorite theme parks, all thanks to Smithsonian Museum Day.

Free tickets don’t include extras like special exhibitions and IMAX movies, so you’ll have to add those on separately if you’re interested. Parking is not included either.

Participating museums include Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Orlando Museum of Art, and the Zimmer Children’s Museum in Los Angeles. The event is a great way to visit a museum you’ve been meaning to explore or find a hidden gem in your city.

For more information, visit the Museum Day Live website.
