In just a few short weeks, Disney theme park fans in Southern California will finally have the opportunity to find out what all the fuss is about when Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! finally opens at Disney California Adventure.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn was on hand (alongside actress Pom Klementieff, who plays new character Mantis) for opening night of the sequel “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, and I was able to speak with him briefly about his thoughts on the ride.
WATCH – VIDEO INTERVIEW:
“Well, we have the Guardians in it, including Pom. She’s in the game, and so it’s really the characters we love in a different sort of format, a different style. But it’s a lot of fun. I rode it. I went down and I got to test-ride it. I test-rode the game at Disneyland. I rode it six times in a row; it’s really fun.”
So that apparently confirms that the live-action actors from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie will indeed appear in the ride, including Mantis herself.
Gunn also referred to the attraction as a “game” twice during our interview. Internationally, it’s not uncommon to interchangeably use the word “game” in place of “ride” or “attraction” – though it’s a bit unusual to hear an American like Gunn to use the term. It seemed like he was searching for the right word and “game” was the one he landed on, whether it was intentional or not. (Or… could it mean ‘Mission: BREAKOUT’ will incorporate some kind of interactive element we aren’t aware of yet? We’ll see soon enough.)
