“but if you’ve already sprung for the April release and don’t own a 3D HDTV then you won’t be missing out on too much.”
And if you don’t own a 3DTV, let’s be honest, people, since it’s not 2010:
– They’ll never perfect “Glasses-Free TV”, so stop holding out,
– It’s been eight years since you had to replace your HDTV, so it’s not like the set companies are “forcing” it on you,
– We’re all used to the glasses charge in theaters, so it’s not a “cash conspiracy” by the hardware companies,
– Dreamworks is almost out of business, so don’t worry, you won’t be “flooded by annoying CGI movies”, and they haven’t done a “cheap conversion” in years,
– 4K will never get its act together to “replace” 3D, and if you want one, there are 4K sets WITH 3D. In fact, you can buy more 3D disks than 4K ones, and some new movies come out with both.
Oh, and if Disney told you “3D was dying”…guess who’s making SW:FA and Jungle Book. 😉
Yeah, seems like of the mania for 4K was just the natural assumption that it was going to come along and, quote, “punish” 3D just for bothering them, than any actual appreciation of what the heck 4K was or was about.
If 3D had come out -three- years after Blu-ray instead of two, would we have thrown such spoiled paranoid tantrums about it?
I bought this set 3 days ago, and I just watched the 3D disc tonight.
And?
Woah, this is one of the best 3D release I’ve seen. It was an incredible experience and I actually enjoyed the 3D experience on my TV more than in the cinema. The depth was excellent. The aerial combat scenes and the fight in the snow looked amazing in 3D! It really looked like the fighters were flying out of my TV screen in front of my eyes, and the lightsaber fight looked like it was coming into my face and it felt really dangerous and menacing! Watching this movie in 3D recreated the magic that I felt back when I saw this movie in the cinema. I am definitely planning to watch this movie many more time. But I think from now on, I will watch The Force Awakens in 3D only.
The blu ray set itself is solid. The cover slipcase is gorgeous and the content is excellent.
I will definitely buy episode 8 and 9 if they release it in this collector’s edition format.
Thanks for your comments and glad to hear you liked the release so much. I’m in the process of setting up a 3D TV in my home and will update this review with my impressions of the 3D disc soon.
Keep the flame, bro. 🙂 Let’s start this whole thing over again, the right way this time.
(BTW, Fox had supposedly remastered all three Prequels in 3D after the success of the Ep. I conversion, and was about to theatrically release Eps. 2 & 3 in 3D before the Disney deal got hold of them–
There were rumors that Disney was finally going to release the entire PT3D in a collector’s box with SW:FA, but looks like that didn’t happen…Next time, though, maybe.)

3D sucks, 4K is a completely superior experience.
