The iconic Hatbox Ghost materializes in the Haunted Mansion, his top hat and glowing form clutching a signature hatbox amid the mansion’s famously eerie ambiance.

After decades of disappearance, the infamous Hatbox Ghost has officially returned to Disneyland. Inside the attic scene of The Haunted Mansion, the mysterious materialization appeared earlier today for the first time since 1969 when the attraction first opened.

Using today’s technology, the Hatbox Ghost does exactly what he was originally intended to do, as his head disappears from atop his shoulders, reappearing inside the hatbox he’s holding. The effect never quite worked as planned so many years ago, but Imagineers have made now it happen.
