I’m originally from London and moved to Shanghai in January and I have visited this Disney Store twice already (the second time being about an hour ago actually!). It’s extremely popular with lines forming outside. I’ve had to wait about 10 minutes to get in on both occassions, and judging by the space allocated to people lining up, this wait can be much longer. The Chinese LOVE Disney. Everywhere in the city I see kids and adults alike wearing Mickey shirts and carrying Disney bags. With the new park opening in less than a year, there is definitely a lot of excitement here and the park is bound to be much more successful than Hong Kong Disneyland.

The store itself is pretty good. I heard on the news that 80% of the products sold in the store are exclusives, and being familiar with Disney merch (having worked at the London Disney Store over the holiday season just gone, I can confirm that this seems to be the case. There are a lot of unique teddys, phone accessories, and they have a very wide range of stationary, stickers and post-its which are quite affordable. For the first week or so they were selling limited edition Mickey and Minnies with golden shoes and I managed to bag myself one despite them being very popular. I noticed that the Star Wars section of the store did not seem very popular among the Chinese crowd, whereas the fab 5 and Frozen fly off the shelves. The hourly show is nice for those like myself who are so far away from the magic of the parks, but it’s not really anything incredible – just a mashup of a fww Disney songs and clips. And in terms of decoration, the store is not a huge leap forward from typical Disney Store decor.

Overall the store is definitely worth a trip if you’re in the area and will tide everyone in Shanghai over until the park finally opens!

By the way, Ricky, I’m a huge long-term fan of your site and podcast, and hope I can be of some help when Disneyland opens over here. 🙂
